there seems to be a lot of music threads here, so i decided to add one. every year we always find out about a band we've never heard before but fall in love with the sound the first time you hear any of their stuff. personally mine this year would probably be bedouin soundclash, street dogs and avenged sevenfold.

what's one of your favorites that you just learned about this year?

I didn't know about Minus the Bear until a friend of mine played a song for me on his birthday; I've been hooked since and bought all their records. Really good band.

Hm, I would have to go with either Avenged Sevenfold or Senses Fail, heard of them both in January, and I've been listening to them even since. Amazing bands.

Only recently started listening to Porcupine Tree, and I'm smitten. :)

When I heard Strange Times by The Black Keys in GTA4 I loved it. Listened to a few of their other songs and I'm really starting to like them.

Hmmm...I would have to say Firewind. Greek Melodic Power Metal/Thrash Metal band. I like their two most recent albums, especially. I like their blend of synth sounds with pure metal and powerful vocals. The song that got me hooked, cheesy as it is:

EDIT: This video is above typical YouTube quality, probably because it comes from the official label.

Pretty much every band that I hear on the FIFA series. They do a really great job packing that game full of great, "unknown" bands that have very original and awesome sounds. I can't name any off the top of my head, but like I said, there are some really great ones in there!

Hmm I'd say despite the fact he (okay not a band but a musical artist) is nothing like what I usually listen to Mike Doughty. I heard I Hear The Bells and loved it. Also Story Of The Year...my friend introduced me to them over summer and I got addicted to the song Anthem Of Our Dying Day.

Model 500. The father's of techno.
I was at a 2 day rave, one of my mate's who's in he's 50's was there with us, he recommended going to see them. I was blown away with just how good they were, it was an amazing set and Ive been hunting down there stuff ever since.
Heres a little for everyone to enjoy.

This came out in 1985, year after I was born and I'm just getting into it now.

Ah, you beat me to it.

On topic, I would have to say Mumford and Sons. They're a folk/indie (if indie even exists properly anymore) band, who have a fanbase of about five people.

Check them out!

Sigh yes and theres alot of other stuff out before I know, maybe father's is an overstatement, how about pretty damn influential to modern electronic music, along with 808 state, and New order and a whole load of other stuff. Happy now?

If you like all those guys so much, you should listen to Juno Reactor. Pretty influential in their own right, and pretty awesome.

I learned about that Jonathan Coulton chap recently. He's pretty good. Not technically a band, but still relevant I reckon.

Well, most of the bands I learned about this year have a song in one of the Guitar Hero games. The best one I've heard so far is from An Endless Sporadic, but the only song I've heard from them is Impulse, so that could change.

And I've just listened to some more of their songs; yeah, they're decent across the board. That's good. I don't like one-hit-wonder bands. They're also a fairly new band, which explains the fact that they don't have as many songs as I thought they did.

Looking through my iTunes library, the bands that I like most that I've first come across this year are Andrew Bird, Apostle of Hustle, Bedroom Walls, Beirut, Godspeed You! Black Emperor, Jeffrey Lewis, Portugal. The Man, Red Sparowes, and the SSRIs. I kind of have eclectic taste.

actually he's correct for techno
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Belleville_Three#The_Belleville_Three

as for Kraftwerk they were more industrial than anything, Derick May, Juan Atkins and Kevin Saunderson were Kraftwerk fans when they made Detroit Techno

Turisas, Tyr, Andrew Bird, Nile, Wolfchant, and Gov't Mule. Fuckin' love them all. They all started as songs I snagged from a friend's Ipod then I downloaded all their songs. Love'em.
