oh, I think i discovered Jay Reatard and Mark Sultan this year... both great musicians/bands. Anybody who likes Eddie Cochran, punk music or even the white stripes should give them a go...

Mute Math. Heard 'Break the Same' on some video a while back, eventually bought their album, and they're now my absolute favourite band. I must have listened to the album over 100 times, I just keep finding new things to hear. If you're reading this, get on YouTube and look for Typical, or another one of their songs. You won't regret it.
Club of the Sons (who are actually related to MuteMath in a distant kinda way) is also pretty awesome, even though they haven't released much yet.

I discovered the brilliance of Voltiare, its a one man band with lyrics that are horribly evil and dark but with a cheery upbeat tone which is brilliant

People who have mentioned Avenged Sevenfold, Nickleback have now forfeited their musical souls. As for my band, it would have to be Parkway Drive, Protest the Hero, Explosions in the Sky, Russian Circles, Lamb of God (i know i know, how long have i denied myself this awesomeness), Unearth, Late of the Pier and a two local metal bands to me, Gacys Threads and Escape Fails.

YES! I am a Musical Nazi! Shut It!!!

Streetlight Manifesto and Catch 22. Heard someone playing Audiosurf using a song from Streetlight Manifesto, asked another friend for some of their songs, and got some Catch 22 songs as a bonus. Now I can't get Keasby Nights outta my head...

Edit: Anyone else here into ska?

This year I've discovered;

Mr Bungle
Estradasphere
Black Mountain
Do Make Say Think
Bell Orchestre
Elbow
Fleet Foxes
DeVotchKa
Emily Loizeau
Lightning Dust
Secret Chiefs 3
M83
Cynic
Pauline Croze
Pineapple Thief
A Silver Mt Zion

Many others as well. Every year I encounter a mountain of new artists. And I've actually considered this a fairly dry year.

Lamb of God? Blasphemy that you have not heard of them earlier.

On topic: I'd probably have to go with Powerglove (A videogame metal cover band), Amon Amarth and Bloodbath.

Although I have a feeling that it was actually late 2007 that I first heard of these bands... but either way listen to them everyone!

OMG...I LUV Kamelot! <3 Anyway, another band I found out about recently is Cattle Decapitation. Really, really brutal Death Metal. Their musicianship is quite good, too, IMO, and they "sing" about the evils of the meat industry. xD

I don't crave Rammstein the way I used to...but Nightwish is my absolute favorite band, and Sonata Arctica has been an old standby group for longer...although I think their newest album was a little bit hit and miss. Too much Prog, not quite enough Power.

The Horrors - London Punk meets...B-Movie Horror? One of those bands that I love yet everyone around me hates, it seems.

I've never owned a Beatles album until 2008.

Same goes for Nine Inch Nails...although I don't listen to them very often.

I tried to like Disturbed but I was ultimately put off by the god-awful, non-sensical, at times borderline-rap lyrics. So, apart from a few songs of theirs which are admittedly great, they were a failed discovery.

This thread has once again reminded me that I hate the music most 'Pists like.

Well, I just learned about a guy named Renard V that makes really good speedcore. I also discovered All That Remains and Senses Fail, but both of those were early in the year.

Vitamin String quartet, I love violin so I was enthused to see instrumentals of songs like headstrong, I hate everything about you, plus numerous pop songs.

Breaking benjamin got me into music, and 12 stones in pretty good to. But BB will always hold a special place in my heart, unless their next cd is as bad as Phobia.

Have you heard any of BBs old stuff off the saturate CD? or even the "we are not alone here"CD
Saturate was a different sound but my favorite, I like Nickelback actually, it's really easy listening.

I've heard of Bad Religion before, but I never got into them because I was never into Punk. My sister who lives in hollywood got into them when she moved down there, because they're so popular in LA, and everytime she visits she brings her Bad Religion CDs and everytime I visit all she plays is Bad Religion in the car. Needless to say, after so much exposure I became addicted and now they're in my top 5 favorite bands of all time.

Hibria - god damn, that is some yummy power metal. And no high fantasy stuff!

Sigh - An Avant-garde/Black Metal band hailing from Japan. Their album "Imaginary Sonicscape" has some of the catchiest guitar riffs I've heard not to mention the excellent use of keyboards and synth.

Led Zepp, Guns 'n' Roses, and possibly ACDC as well.

Until recently I was very much against listening to new music, mostly because the other stuff I heard was garbage.
