Gone Gonzo Posts: 2735 Joined: 5 Aug 2008 | Indeed, this thread has been done before (at least twice I think). On topic: I am definitely a geek, no question about it. I love: |

Gone Gonzo Posts: 2444 Joined: 27 Sep 2008 | I think of myself as a geek, although I'm not too into the technology thing, and there's so little difference between the geek and the nerd anyway so I figure they're pretty much interchangeable. Why would anyone admit to being a dork anyway? |
Gone Gonzo Posts: 1323 Joined: 10 May 2008 | If i had to choose, i'd say i'm a geek, seeing as i'm in love with retro gaming, so far i havent got much to show for it though, only a t-shirt and a Megaman drawing up on the wall, but once i get a job and i get money rolling in im gonna go visit a female friend of mine and start getting tattoos, so far i have 3 tattoos planned: Hyrule Emblem on my back These are the ones i have planned but there will no doubt be more of them seeing as im certain i will always love retro gaming, im 19 now, been gaming since the age of 4, so i figured, if i passionately love something for 15 years, why not make them a part of my using tattoos |
Pulitzer Laureate Posts: 764 Joined: 3 Sep 2008 | I'm a geek for music and games, but I'm hardly a geek personality-wise. The only anime I watch is Naruto and that's just because I think Sakura is awesome. I go out drinking with friends, a large amount of which are female. |
Copy Clerk Posts: 119 Joined: 19 Dec 2007 | Im not really part of any of these as far as im considered. I like to think im pretty well rounded. I like games, but not to a crazy extreme, i have a good social life, and my hobbies are pretty normal (mostly hockey). |
Gone Gonzo Posts: 4604 Joined: 13 Aug 2008 | I think I'm a geek and a nerd, in that I am into things that are outside the social norm, but I also like technology and the like. I usually call myself a nerd though, because, let's face it, nerd just SOUNDS better than geek. Geek sounds so harsh when you say it, but nerd is soft and soothing. Try it. Say them both out loud, and tell me which sound you like better. |
Pulitzer Laureate Posts: 835 Joined: 29 Mar 2008 | nerd and geek... and im proud of it! XD also i wear glasses so that's a plus 3 in nerd-diness, no? |
Pulitzer Laureate Posts: 771 Joined: 31 Mar 2008 | I'm pretty much the dork, though slightly less socially inept than that implies, and with dashes of Guitar Hero geekery. I'm quite content with this. |

Infamous Scribbler Posts: 635 Joined: 13 Oct 2007 | A little bit of everything I guess. But if I had to choose one, I would obviously be a geek, seeing as I work on the Geek Squad and all... |

Gone Gonzo Posts: 3584 Joined: 6 Aug 2008 | Pimp. :P Probably nerd, but I'm not actually that smart. |
Gone Gonzo Posts: 1587 Joined: 16 Aug 2008 | If you want my opinion we shouldn't divide people into groups... |
Muckraker Posts: 314 Joined: 22 Sep 2008 | I took a test on this once and came out nerd, so there ya go. Time to get back to doing fractal equations and disproving string theory whilst reading Sherlock Holmes. Aha. |

Copy Clerk Posts: 107 Joined: 11 Sep 2008 | Dork for sure. I love Star Wars, video games, reading, cheezy jokes, and acting a fool. |
Press Junketeer Posts: 362 Joined: 25 Nov 2008 | to be honest, im not called a geek at my school sadly, they call me gary...... which i find offensive |
Beat Writer Posts: 188 Joined: 3 Jun 2008 | Other. I have a very full social life with a lager group of mates. It just happens that I like to play games and surf the web too. |
Anonymous Source Posts: 2 Joined: 1 Dec 2008 | I have been called a dork more than anything in life, so I would assume that would suit me much better than the other two. Though strangely people seem to try and coin the term as a compliment for me? |
Pulitzer Laureate Posts: 931 Joined: 17 Sep 2008 | I chose other, there is no "all of the above" option. I do get referred to by friends as a nerd. |
Gone Gonzo Posts: 1871 Joined: 11 Jun 2008 | I am a Geek, used to be a Dork... but since MMA has made martial arts popular again, the dynamic has changed and now I'm training with douche bags. go figure. |
BANNED Posts: 172 Joined: 12 Aug 2008 | you know after saying "geek" a dozen times it starts to not sound like a word anymore. User was banned for: The day I lost my soul. (Permanent) |
Gone Gonzo Posts: 2158 Joined: 28 May 2008 | I don't think I really fall into any one of those categories too much. Probably more a Geek than anything else there. |
Infamous Scribbler Posts: 544 Joined: 17 Sep 2008 | Voted geek, in honor of my old econmoics teacher. She was bringing back geek in a good way, associating it with being good at something rather than what most people think, ie that so and so is a geek so must have no life, is boring bla bla. |
Beat Writer Posts: 194 Joined: 25 Nov 2008 | Nerdly, Quite so... Hrmmm, Yes..... Quaint.... |
Gone Gonzo Posts: 1933 Joined: 1 Jan 2008 | I think why I've never been able fit in here is because I was never one of those: I was (and still am, kinda, sorta) reasonably popular at school, and hung out with both the cool kids and the guys that played DnD during lunch break. So, it was a delicate balance of nerd and jock. Edit: I kind of sound like a douchebag in this post. Oh well. |
Infamous Scribbler Posts: 605 Joined: 26 Sep 2008 | Yeah, I was just wondering what people thought based on the actual definitions. The three words seem to be used interchangeably without respect to the original definitions. |

I was just wondering which oddball faction the Escapists primarily identify themselves with. I paraphrased the definitions from the Wiki. For the record:
-A dork is a socially inept person, often out of touch with (not disliking) contemporary trends. This is regardless of intelligence or intellect.
-A geek is overly obsessed with things, including technology, gaming, and other intellectual topics.
-A nerd is someone who passionately pursues obscure or intellectual hobbies outside the social or popular activities standard to their age group.
So, what are you?
I see myself mostly as a geek, but could be seen as a nerd depending on what groups I am around. Many of the nerdy things of the past are becoming more mainstream today.
