Is anyone else not surprise by the bad things that keep happening?

Because I've recently stopped and I wanna know if I'm not alone on this one.
I wasnt surprised by the attacks in Mumbai.
I wasnt suprised by the deaths caused by this whole Black Friday shit.
I wasn't surprised when a World War 2 Veteran and his wife were attacked in their own home on Remembrance Day.
I wasn't surprised when the killers of that goth girl were given a shorter sentence.

This is bothering me because usually after you stopped being surprised by events happening, you stop caring, and it just seems like it's the sort of thing that shouldn't exactly be brushed off.

So yeah...is anyone else not surprised any more or is it just me?

Well its not surprising your always going to hear bad news, because it sells better then good news, but yeah considering how there's always another stabbing or attack I think people just become immune to it and see it as a part of daily life. You turn on the TV and hear "another man dead" its disconnected and normal to you so you just see it as natural as going to work

I don't think it's just you. I didn't feel surprised at any of these things either. It doesn't mean I don't care. It's just that we're more desensitised to it, we hear about things like this all the time. It's always happening somewhere, doesn't make it any less terrible, just less new.

I once thought that I was far too cynical to enjoy children's movies but then I saw Iron Giant and realized that it wasn't me. Cartoons really have gone to shit lately.

Not so much surprised, more appalled.

The Black Friday deaths were a fucking digrace and maybe a global recession will be for the best if this is the way people with too much money behave.

I realise that statement is full of holes and flaws but...well, bollocks. It's fucking disgusting.

It's called growing up. Welcome to the club.
And I really don't mean that in a rude way, so hear me out:

As you get older, you just see this shit compounding on top of more shit day after day and it gets to the point that, while you would certainly say it's terrible/tragic/whatever, it isn't surprising. I heard on the news the other day about a guy who busted into a birthday party full of kids, killed the mother of the kid hosting the party, critically injured the father and another kid, and slit another kid's throat.

I think we ALL would say (I hope) that such an act is TERRIBLE and extremely tragic. But am I surprised it's happening? Not really. Just a little more aware that humanity only can walk downhill steadily. For every 'good news' story I hear, there are twice as many (Or more) stories of murder and war.

Sadly, you just get used to hearing it. That's why it didn't surprise me that people kept shopping when that guy was trampled to death at the walmart (As sad as that was). They were used to that shit too, and they wanted what they wanted.

Agreed. I partly blame Spongebob Squarepants. That show is the 4chan of cartoons. There is absolutely no depth or intelligence to it, it's just completely mindless and weird.

It's just this day and age. With all the violence and graphic imagery you can get exposed to in your entire life it's no wonder we've become virtually immune. The media can show us rape and murder every day, and if you get confronted by it every day, you have to have some kind of defense mechanism so it doesn't psychically break you down. These are all very horrible things that are happening, and we can acknowledge that, but it doesn't stop uis from getting up the next day to go to work, because if we would get so emotionally involved in every piece of suffering we get shoved into our faces every day, none of us would be able to function properly anymore.

So no, I'm not surprised that you're not surprised, or shocked or whatever you want to call it. It's just the way of coping with these things: indifference.

I'm not surprised by much that goes on in the world, but that's because I've seen it coming for a while. It's not that the world is going to end, but a massive change is coming. And soon.

the black friday deaths happens every year and each year no one learns from the previous ones

Well you've got the whole... It's happening elsewhere thing. You know, the terror attacks in Mumbei weren't that bad, that many people die every day in Iraq (not recently though) from suicide bombings and the like, it only came up so much in the news because no one really expected anything to happen there. The things you aren't surprised about are well, not really surprising anyway, some of it was pretty bad, but it all has a similar event preceding it. These things aren't unprecedented, people have been crushed by mobs before, killers get their sentences reduced, terrorist attacks happen. But there is still disconnect because these things aren't happening to you personally.

Hmm? Oh, I'm just saying that every time in history these sort of events started occuring on a regular basis, large changes occured throughout the world. Things get to their worst, and then they get better than before. I'm not trying to imply that I know what's going to happen, it's just that looking at the examples history has given us, I'm predicting a global shift of some sort or another.

Human beings are disgusting creatures on the whole. There's sadly nothing we can do about it. There will always be stupid, aberrant, and terrible wastes of flesh, no matter what we do.

The one that really gets me is another suicide bombing in Iraq its tragic and all but even in New zealand we hear about it every other day and you just kind of disconnect from it and ignore it

I have a theory about what you are saying.

I can go more deep if you want but the basic idea is.

If enough people believe something is going to happen, then we will it on to ourselves. Think about this, 1 and every 500 people think the world is going to really end, because they see all these events and match it to religion and pop culture. Well that's a lot of people, that may be a self fulling prophecy.

The world really hasn't changed much and if there are events that have changed there world there has been Three, first, humans discovered Fire, and next was Farming, last was thinking global, which came from the age of sail.

As far as these acts of violence in the first post, we have done this for ages, nothing has changed in that way.

Thats my theory or idea on that matter.

ditto. It's rare for me to watch the news. I just play my video games and have fun while trying to ignore the world.

I like to think that without mass media, we wouldn't be aware in the first place. So really, when another stabbing happens somewhere in the world, it's nothing new. It's been happening since we discovered sharp things hurt, it's just that now these things are brought to our attention and we realize how it doesn't phase us. And rightly it shouldn't, in some cases, such as individual acts of violence. Disasters of a larger scale, however, are another matter as they at times involve all of us.

It's called desensitization. Most of us who care to pay attention see so much wrong shit nowadays that it becomes the norm... It becomes acceptable to us.

It's sad, but very real and true.

This is also a very bizzare and frightening trend on the internet. When people start insulting their own race, like they have gone to a different planet with far more "civilised" people. Would you rather be a dog? A cat? A type of fish? Also how in the world do you "waste flesh" thats by far the most disturbing part of your post and I honestly hope you don't believe what you posted.
