Thought i'd make a thread for metalheads to come and discuss things. Sorry if there's already one of these floating around, the search came up with nothing (mind you, the search function on these forums isn't great).

Anyway, what sort of metal are people listening to right now? I mainly listen to melodic death and the occasional bit of tech death. I've also been listening to a bit more black metal thanks to Abigail Williams' new album. Anyone else heard it yet? I thought it was a big step up from their EP.

Update:
Thought i'd bring this back to keep other metal threads to a minimum. You don't need to make more threads when there's this thing to post in.

I generaly only like slow metal. Electric Wizard, Nortt, Evoken, that sort of stuff. Oh and Converge but metalheads seem to dislike metalcore.

Wait... this isn't a thread about metal! It's a thread about Metal!

After years of listening to 'fussy' over complicate stuff, like Mudvayne, Scar Symmetry and Slipknot, or more Hip-Hop influenced stuff like Korn it's a releif to find a band like Amon Amarth who have stripped the genre right back to the riff,
I don't really give a rats ass about it like Iused to, but asides from early Motown and Stax no other style of music comes close to genuinely aggressive metal.

I was wondering how soon that was going to come up. Lets try and stay on topic shall we?

I have to admit speedcore, i have heard of none of those bands. I know what you're talking about with metalcore though, I used to like it. I think all the abuse from metal elitists turned me into one.

I listen to most types of metal but mostly power metal and also symphonic metal. My favourite band is Disturbed. With Marilyn Manson and and Nightwish a close second and third.

I was in a band once called Aluminium. We played light metal.

in seriousness, i like more where metal came from, guys like Page and Hendrix. I'm not that into shredding, mainly because I can't do it

My thoughts exactly. Nothing else has the same sort of power as metal (sounds cheesy, i know). I also enjoy Amon Amarth, it's nice to see a band that doesn't take themselves too seriously. I thought Twighlight of the Thunder God was a really good release from them this year.

Well, it keeps my buttons on, that's for sure...no! I'm sorry, I'll cooperate.

I'm not a metal head anymore, but melodic death metal along with plain ol' death metal is something I listen to on occasion. Black metal I also listen to once in a while. Doom, as well, like old Paradise Lost, mainly for nostalgia value.

I love thrash metal. If it's thrash then there is a good chance I know it and like it. Unless it's some of the new stuff that claims to be Thrash but is closer to Metalcore or even Nu-Metal.

Mostly death metal and groove metal, and the occasional tech death band. I've been increasing drawn toward grindcore lately though.

Iron Maiden... Good old NWBHM music. That's my style. As far as more recent metal, my preferences range from relaxed Wolfmother to Trivium.

Actually, I can't call wolfmother metal really. What WOULD you define them as?

I've never really been able to get into thrash much. Closest i get is some melodic death metal that has thrash influences, like The Absence. Actually, if there's anyone else here that likes melo-death, listen to The Absence. Some absolutely amazing music, especially their newest release, Riders of the Plague.

I listen mostly to death metal, thrash metal, heavy metal, and whatever kind of metal you'd consider Black Sabbath. (Early metal?)

Well put it this way, Electric Wizard sound like Black Sabbath. Played at half speed. While stoned. Underwater. and Nortt likes to describe his music as "black funeral doom metal" (it's not, IMO it's depressive ambient metal). So yeah, that about sums up half of the metal I like. Doom FTW!

I'm not really a fan of metalcore, although saying that I haven't really heard much, it's just that Converge are so brutaly heavy without being part of the pathetic hxcbr00talomgrawr crowd.

I've never really been a fan of doom metal. I like the atmospheric feeling you get from some of it, bt it lacks a certain oomph.

What new releases are people looking forward to next year? I'm hoping Mors Principium Est (another great melo-death band) will manage to get some new stuff out, i know they've started writing some material.

Edit: It seems that trying to edit quotes is a rather large mistake.

I like a little bit of metal. I like the stuff that's more... 'artistic' stuff like agalloch, Sculptured, Cynic, Wolves in the Throne Room.

Also a lot of Post-Metal is good (A.K.A. Instrumental Metal) stuff like shelter red or red sparrows

Am I right in saying metal got its name because itis harder than rock?

and personally i like most kinds of metal as long as they get the emotion (normally anger) across in a good way, and are not just trying any way they can think of to sell me a disc or two (nu-metal comercialism). I don't realy like Black metal, it's just never realy put together too well, and i dont understand satanism either (someone else said they wern't a christian while talking about black metal earlier so i am going to say that i am).

Metal I enjoy:

NWOBHM
Thrash
Death
Black
Progressive
Grunge
Doom
Metal I think is rotting our children's brains with it's stupidity:

Metalcore
Deathcore
Nu-Metal (exceptions though)
Alt Metal
Newer American
Symphonic Black
Grindcore
Power
Hair
Classic*

Suck it Scene kids.

*Look I know what your gonna say "You dislike Led Zepplin? You sir are an idiot :)" The only reason why I do not like Classic Rock 'n Roll/Metal is that it's overplayed for the most part and basterdized by modern fashion.

I'd agree, but I can enjoy some metal

I'm not a huge fan, but I have to admit, the instrumental work is pretty great. However, I do feel, generally, that metat is weaker lyrically than other forms of music.

So, I'm no fan, but I could easily understand why someone would be

Wish I could say the same for hip-hop, rap, r&b, etc.

Wolfmother is rock. More specifically defined as either progressive rock or folk rock. And also Led Zeppelin clones. :)
I mainly like metalcore, progressive metal, powermetal, hardcore, post-metal(core) and some post-hardcore.

I generally enjoy any kind of metal, from power to black (maybe not so much death metal).

However thrash, heavy and power/melodic metal are my genres of choice.

Bands I like are Slayer,Iron Maiden, Metallica (pre-Black Album, mind you! Death Magnetic was ok, though), Manowar, Children of Bodom... I could go on, it depends on my daily mood really. A bad day is most likely to include a lot of Slayer, Megadeth, Metallica and Immortal, while a good day sees a lot of Nocturnal Rites, Sonata Arctica, Nightwish and Iron Maiden.

If any of you are into black metal and haven't heard it yet, you should check out Taake's first album, Nattestid Ser Porten Vid. One of my favorite albums in the genre, the thing is just pure beauty all the way through.

I used to think most of the lyrics in metal were awful, and some of them definitely are. But there are definitely some fantastic lyricists in metal. One of my favourite bands for lyrics are The Absence. Look at these: http://www.darklyrics.com/lyrics/theabsence/ridersoftheplague.html#3
Compare that to say, some indie lyrics.

I like progressive/symphonic. Not really a big fan of primal roars and screams. I prefer my metal a bit more melodic.

Top ten of all time.

Iron Maiden
Iced Earth (pre-Horror Show days)
Blind Guardian
Demons and Wizards
Arcturus
Therion
Opeth
Dark Tranquility
Bruce Dickinsn solo
Bathory
Judas Priest
...
Okay, top eleven. May be out of order, but I can't pick between these bands.
