Gone Gonzo Posts: 2768 Joined: 13 Feb 2008 | Oh joy! Another product that I couldn't care less about. I mean, I've never had a cell phone, and I don't see the point in getting one. Thing is, the iPhone is made by Mac, and all Mac products are trendy. The reason no MP3 player could beat out the iPod is because it was well-known and popular. Even if this is better, which seems to be true, the iPhone will still outsell it. I predicted the format wars, and I'm always right about them: the product with the easier name is the winner. iPod, Blu-ray, etc. It's always the clean, sleek products with names rather than numbers that sell well. It's not because they are better, and they may win for reasons completely unrelated to their name, but the one with the fancy name always wins. |

That's because you aren't in a profession which makes one, especially a powerful one, very useful.
I don't mind that the iPhone will probably outsell this. What matters is that manufacturers are competing on the free market and us consumers, whether we pick the iPhone or the N97 or whatever, are better off because of it.

Gone Gonzo Posts: 2768 Joined: 13 Feb 2008 | Oh, don't mind me. I just meandered in here and figured I might as well speak my mind. I do find that little machine up there very impressive, but I'm just not excited because it's not affecting me in any way. And with that, I bid you good night. My subconscious is grappling with my mind, and I figure it should get it's turn to run rampant for a few hours. |

Anyways, I don't know much about cellphones so excuse my ignorance when I say it doesn't seem that much better than what's already out there. At least not enough to make me start caring about cellphones. |

Well, this guy has finally outed me. Guys, I just want to let you know that I'm advertising for Nokia. Indeed, Nokia has recognized the incredible potential this single forum has for future superphone owners and they have contracted me to indirectly advertise this phone in a single thread. You are a winner and a hero. User was banned for: Microsoft and the World Domination of Gaming&Communication. (Permanent) |

Firstly yes I know I am and secondly you didn't answer the question. If your spam is worth posting then why shouldn't anyone else spam the site with deals on second hand shoes. |
Gone Gonzo Posts: 3703 Joined: 18 Dec 2007 | I really don't care about the phone you want. No one cares about the phone you want. I highly doubt santa is lurking around here and even if he was we all know that he would be in the Forum Games and RP section. You could at least add some damn content to this advertisement. Maybe let others talk about their phones instead of just showing off yours? |
On the Record Posts: 5832 Joined: 29 Jun 2004 | I'd buy it but I don't think the name is catchy enough and I am just fine with my Treo 750 for now. And your advertisement needs more screenshots, preferably with it closed both front and back. I'm lazy and don't care enough to google it. |
Gone Gonzo Posts: 1094 Joined: 11 Oct 2008 | I gave up on nokia ages ago, the biggest reason is because a lot of their phones are unreliable and drain energy way too fast. I picked Sony Ericsson and it still hasn't failed me yet in 2 years in both quality or battery. While that phone may have all those features it's gonna come back to point B, all that crap will drain energy, meaning you'll have to put that thing into charging every day. |
Pulitzer Laureate Posts: 733 Joined: 4 Nov 2008 | Holy shit I know I'd NEVER use 90% of the features on it but DO WANT! |

Have you seen the data sheet on its battery life? http://events.nokia.com/nokiaworld/assets/pdf/Data_Sheet_Nokia%20N97.pdf It will play MP3s for 37 hours. That right there is ridiculous.
Yes, because as everyone knows, a single link to an Engadget article (Engadget just happens to be one of the largest blogs for this particular topic) is exactly the same thing as spamming deals on second hand shoes. What the hell are some of you smoking and why hasn't it been passed around to me? User was banned for: Microsoft and the World Domination of Gaming&Communication. (Permanent) |

Blatent spamming is still spamming no matter how valuable you percieve the cause. It is exactly the same for someone that really loves a deal on second hand shoes and highly regards the benefits a good pair of shoes can provide. |

Stop posting off topic, take it to PM (if you really want to continue this) or I will have to report you. If you have no mind for talking about Nokia's new phones or the possible phones being released in response by Apple, HTC, and other phone manufacturers, then no one is forcing you to stay here and baselessly accuse and troll me for "spamming" and "advertising." I stayed up at 3:15 AM to watch the first of the keynotes (and a couple of them after that) for Nokia World. I was so excited to see what was going to be revealed and it actually felt nice to not be disappointed. And in terms of price, you do have to admit, it's certainly a lot cheaper than the other two phones (SE Xperia X1 and the HTC Touch Pro) in its class, even though it (currently) beats all of them in terms of...well...everything right now. Although, what makes me really excited is how much of a fire this will be under the bottoms of Apple, HTC, and SE :) More importantly, I want to see more Android devices next year! Damn, if I end up doing a Master's in HCI, I definitely want to work for Nokia. It's a damn shame they can't throw S60 out the window and completely renovate it and/or move onto Android. Hell, in two or three couple years, processors will be powerful enough for them to virtualize S60 right into Android or whatever Linux platform they will eventually have to use. Gone Gonzo Posts: 1905 Joined: 9 Sep 2008 | I'd love a company to make a phone that just makes phone calls and has ridiculously long battery life. No games, no camera, no SMS, no MMS, no PTT, no stupid exercise apps, no downloadable apps, no custom ringtones, no voice recorder, no clock, no calendar, no memo pad, no email, no internet, no gimmicks, nothing but voice. I wouldn't have it though. SMS finally proved itself useful when people realised how stupidly expensive SMS conversations are compared with actually talking to people and made SMS clear and concise, plus I've been in enough situations to know the value of having a camera on me at all times. And I don't wear a watch. |

You're missing a camera and GPS unit. Is there a laptop, phone, dongle, camera, and GPS unit combo out there which costs about 550 euros or less? And the thing is, this isn't a pocket brick. It's thinner than the majority of phones, both smart and dumb, out there. It's only a little larger than the iPhone 3G: http://www.sizeasy.com/page/size_comparison/20373-iPhone-3G-vs-Nokia-N97-vs-N85-vs-N95 And do you have a laptop which lets you listen to music for 37 hours? :p Then again, why can't you have both? Personally, I'm looking to get one of these and a dual-core netbook when that also comes out. User was banned for: Microsoft and the World Domination of Gaming&Communication. (Permanent) |
Gone Gonzo Posts: 3285 Joined: 23 Oct 2007 | I suppose I'm one of the few people interested in this. It's certainly very technically impressive and probably just what Nokia needed in terms of a flagship product. I don't think that it looks as aesthetically attractive as the Nokia E71 - the very device that I'm posting this from - but for personal use (as opposed to the business intentions of the E71, some of those features actually being very useful to me) this looks like the phone to get. I do agree about S60 - it's certainly showing its age, and apparently it's a bitch to program for. I expect that Nokia will be drawn more towards Linux than Android; their N800 tablets are testament to that. Whatever open-source operating system they do choose, however, it will take a dump on nearly every mobile operating system currently out there, including iPhone OS, which I've never regarded as particularly impressive. @Jursa: Actually, Nokia currently has devices with some of the longest battery lives out there, which includes my E71, which has an astounding maximum of 14 hours talk-time, which is probably just as long as my base-level Nokia 1600 which preceded it, and that didn't have any features like mobile internet or GPS. @Hawgh: The QWERTY layout, while possibly seeming counter-intuitive for mobile devices, operates on a scale of speed which leaves unassisted numerical keypads absolutely trailing in the dust, and can beat T9 numerical keypads in the hands of a trained user - because of my knowledge of the QWERTY layout, my speed of typing has been speeded up several times. It's also demonstratably better than anything on the iPhone, and also beats stylus-based touch keyboards, which I have experience with through my Palm T|X. |
BANNED Posts: 4378 Joined: 21 Aug 2008 | Yeah, it's unfortunate that it isn't as good looking as the E71, but honestly, I really doubt *anything* will ever look as good as the E71. The closest would have been something based off of the N810. When I had my E71, it looked beautiful next to my N810. My biggest peeve with S60 is that all the different options to get wireless data (3G vs WiFi) for different applicatons are horribly managed and should instead be automatically prioritized as set by the user. To be honest I didn't really look at it. What the hell do you need a GPS tracker for anyway, last time I checked you were a college student. No, I have an MP3 player that lets me listen to music for 37 hours. I guess if you were a travelling IT consultant it'd probably be useful, I remember Maddox's loving rant about the last awesome Nokia. Gadget love bores me a little, but at leas its not an Isomething. Until we get something implanted into our head that allows us to read the news with one eye whilst navigating commuter travel with the other it's all spitting in the wind. |

There have been a lot of awesome Nokias since that one, actually :p

Well you guys need to pull your fingers out then. Lazy bloody students. I'd like to be able to operate a mouse type interface with my mind and type what I verbalise in my head. What's taking so long? Also, don't split up the quotes like that, it just means I have to delete more of your quote alerts. |

Larger (touch!)screen than any other QWERTY slider out there? ✔
Largest amount of storage space ever offered on a phone? ✔
A more comprehensive feature set than any other QWERTY slider out there? ✔
Takes a huge dump all over both variants of the iPhone? ✔✔✔
And most impressively: thinner than any other QWERTY slider out there? ✔
Drool along with me, children. Is there anything Apple, HTC, or Sony Ericsson could possibly and realistically do to best this?
I'm still getting (another) Nokia E71 this holiday season, but at least now I have an idea what its successor might be sometime in H1 2009 :]
