I'm actually a Linux guy, but I'll hazard a post here (*Braces self*):
I like macs. Windows Vista? It's fine if you've got a decent computer. I had very few problems with it, actually. If you've got a decent PC, it'll run fine.
OSX? It's also a good operating system. And, I've got to say, it's less bloated then Windows.
The Beauty (If you want to call it that) about macs is that they aren't big fans of third part anything. Which means that they OS doesn't have to have a ton of little drivers that 90% of people won't use already to be used in case they are used (It makes sense, read it slowly). Windows, however, is crazy third party friendly, which means that the system is LOADED DOWN with services, drivers, and such just ready and waiting for some obscure device to suddenly plug in.
Macs are fine, and I would actually like one for my work (I'm in audio editing - Radio producer/freelance audio editor).
But we have to remember that computers, whether they are Windows Based, Linux Based, or Macs, are tools made to fix, or help with, an issue. Macs are great for some, Windows PCs are great for some, and Linux PCs are great for some. Why are we so divisive over a tool?
This is like carpenters fighting over which hammer to use. EDIT: I know there are different types of hammers, but I'm referring more to hammer brands. I put this so I wouldn't get any smart as framer or roofer coming on here talking about how their Stiletto Hammer is totally worth the $300 it costs to get it.
I think I'd rather switch to newspapers and handwriting instead of using a mouse with only one button. (edit: or using Vista) But enjoy your "stable and convinient" computers, friends.
Saphatorael: Why are we discussing Macs, on a gaming forum? That's like discussing squares in a forum that's about drawing circles.
Win.
If circle drawers never discuss other shapes, then they limit themselves and their knowledge.
Yes, but a forum that's about drawing circles, talks about drawing circles, because... it's a forum about drawing circles.
Now, if they'd want to discuss other shapes, they could go to another forum, one that discusses all kinds of shapes!
Also, what's the point of this thread. Talking about macs, sure. The only thing I can see happening here is mac fanboys feeling superior, and pc nerds (no offense, I'm one myself) saying mac users are retards who can't even right click (it's true, ahem). And occasionally some iCirclejerking.
Requesting a lock before this gets out of hand, like any other thread on the subject.
xxcloud417xx: Most will even say they're better than PC (hell, I agree).
For some odd reason, this reads to me like you're asking the group, labeled "Not Most," to disagree with you quite thoroughly. I disagree that Macs are better, because I really don't see the process-benefits of a Mac.
Granted:
Mac is more tuned, out of the box (software included) for video and image editing, as well as an interface that is designed for that function. Everything about the Mac is streamlined for editing software.
Macs are more simplistic, and therefore, user-friendly.
Macs are generally more efficient OSes. Out of the box, Mac already runs at more efficient capacity than Windows. Less processor and RAM required, for any given task.
But, counter-points for all of the above:
Windows computers can do it, too. Not as streamlined, light, or zippy. But if you want to make an analogy, while Mac is a turbo-charged little lightweight car, any Windows machine can offset that by being a powerhouse car, like Bugatti or a Ferrari.
Simplicity is a form of complicity. You get too complacent, and no matter how "idiot-proof" you try to make the OS, mankind will invent a newer, better idiot. If you can learn the quirks of a Mac, you can also learn the quirks of PCs.
Macs are also weaker computers. Windows machines are designed for power. Sure, the Mac uses less processor, but PCs have more power to use. So it balances out. Not to mention gaming and whatnot.
On top of that:
Macs are almost entirely non-functional when you look at the number of programs out there. I've had no end of trouble trying to get my brother's Mac laptop to even run low-end NES emulators. I shouldn't have to exhaust computer knowledge to get a simple program running. That's the bottom-rung of gaming. To go any higher, you have to emulate Windows anyway.
Macs are unfriendly. Macs have a method of operating, and you can't deviate from it. If you don't, it'll give you hell. So in being user-friendly, it's very restrictive for what more advanced users could do. That's not to say it can't be done, but it's infinitely more difficult to do even the simplest of things.
Hrm... In short, I don't see the appeal of Macs, unless all you do is editing. Even then, I use computers as hobbies. Sometimes, I just want to play a game. On a Mac, you have maybe 6 to choose from. Windows has six hundred, just counting the easily-found freeware online. There are several thousand more.
Did i mention that most people who deny that Apple makes great computers are either ignorant, stupid or both? I think we have a good example of one of those people now. Thanks TheGhostOfSin.
This is an unfounded generalisation with some flame on top.
Esthetics. They also do look pretty nice and sleek.
Again, subjective.
Annoyance. Vista vs. Mac OS X. That's all i got to say.
Another generalisation. In my personal experience, I've never crashed using Vista. Internet Explorer has frozen a handful of times, but that's because it's Internet Explorer (I don't enjoy Firefox).
My opinion? I dislike Macs because of their Mac Vs. PC ads. The ads showcase less why you should buy a Mac and more why you shouldn't buy a PC. In my eyes, I see this as the Mac being a troll.
Want some well constructed arguements? See Babytea and NewClassic's posts above.
I want a new laptop (god forbid I'll be able to afford one... but I digress...) and all of our previous computers have been fucked by viruses in the past. I want a laptop that has these features:
Very good at: Internet surfing Playing and downloading music and videos Playing downloaded games (like SNES/Gameboy emulators and I Wanna Be The Guy)
Won't get viruses And has an easy interface Won't crash very often
xxcloud417xx: Well, we can't deny that Apple makes great computers. Most will even say they're better than PC (hell, I agree). So I figured that mac users deserved a Mac thread (even PC users should read up on Mac). So here it is the iThread dedicated to Mac chat.
I would also like to invite some pro Mac users to discuss on here and answer questions about Macs.
I would say that 90% of computer users disagree with you.
Just because computers are in the majority does not make them superior. Macs are better in every aspect
i'm sorry.... the internal grammar nazi has been steadily building up steam, and has rigged the vote on the common sense vote of whether to correct it but.... Aesthetics Now repeat Aesthetics Do not make me murder some small creature
I'm a PC user myself, but Macs do have their merits. I like the pre-installed software (Especially Garage Band and iMovie) and the interface does look pretty cool, but that's about as far as my liking of them goes. They can't run most games (Neither can my laptop, but that's just because it's old), the whole one button thing is very annoying to me. People always said I'd get used to it if I used it more. I spent all of sixth form using one for school. I still hate it, let me right click without holding a damn key down!
Another thing I dislike is (and this is probably a feature that can be disabled, I never bothered check) is the screen dimming. Every time I want to watch a YouTube video or something on a Mac, I have to repeatedly tap the touch pad so the screen doesn't go dim. Very annoying stuff.
And of course the most important thing, Macs are more expensive. You can get a PC with the same specs as a Mac for at least a couple hundred dollars less. And way more than a couple hundred less if you build one yourself.
PC has it's problems, but so does Mac. Stop blindly worshiping something just because that guy from Die Hard 4 said so.
the_tramp: This isn't a statement, I mean it as an honest question to all Mac users...
Why did you buy a Mac as opposed to a PC?
I second this question, and not as an attack on Macs, but just what attracted you to them.
To tell the truth; because the PC and the Mac Pro were very similarly powered it came down to one simple difference... the mac can run windows. I know you can get OSX to run on a PC, but it's a fairly complicated hack. So now I have a computer that I am not limited to what I can do with it. I can do all my work and animation on the Mac side, and game on the Windows side.

I "think" MacBooks fit that well (not sure about emulators), but a healthy laptop will too. There probably is more to consider though such as cost and the possibility of other functions you may need your laptop to perform later.
And congratulations for having the only constructive post in this thread, actually asking something about Mac products rather then comparing wang size.

Name one.
Susceptibility to viruses. Macs are almost completely immune. Whereas computers you either have to buy extra virus protection or expect you're computer to be infected within 30 seconds of internet use.

Ha! The internet isn't the battleground the media wants you to think it is. I have no extra virus protection and have yet to notice a single virus. My computer is still running blazingly fast and I am having no problems. Also, Macs have no Anti-Virus protection at-all. If any hacker decided to make a virus for a Mac, you'd all be screwed.
On another note, the boot-camp argument works against you here. When running Windows, you are equally suceptable to viruses as everyone else.

First of all Matey your on a gaming site. thus basically all of the expensive computer using people here will be on PC's since there are hardly any decent big games for Macs.
Second Macs are not as brilliant as you make them out too be and for the amount of money they cost that same amount could be put into building a far supperior computer.
Third, Macs are only doing well because they're seen as cool and bohemian and used by the great artistic of the modern age. this is due to their brainwashing advertising. they may have a large amount of programmes too help people in the music/design industry's but they are simply not as good as some open source versions of them.
Susceptibility to viruses. Macs are almost completely immune. Whereas computers you either have to buy extra virus protection or expect you're computer to be infected within 30 seconds of internet use.
My PC has been connected to the internet since I first got it. (Broadband and Fixed electric bill.) and the only virus protection I've ever had is AVG. (free)
Discounting MSN, which I consider a virus that can be used for IM, my PC is completely fine.
SecretTacoNinja: I want a new laptop (god forbid I'll be able to afford one... but I digress...) and all of our previous computers have been fucked by viruses in the past. I want a laptop that has these features:
Very good at: Internet surfing Any computer, any OS. Playing and downloading music and videos Any computer, any OS. Playing downloaded games (like SNES/Gameboy emulators and I Wanna Be The Guy) Easiest on Windows, more difficult but higher functionality on Linux, hardest and least supported on Macs
Won't get viruses Oh hell. Linux would be best for this. Any computer/OS can prevent viruses, though. Firewall, virus/spyware/adware scanners, and not using P2P like LimeWire. And has an easy interface Some dystros for Linux, although not all. Windows and Macs are both fairly easy to use. Any OS. Won't crash very often Every OS has it's quirks. Windows gets the most support, but has the most likely to go wrong. Mac crashes easily and inexplicably in some programs, and flies wonders in others. Linux is the least supported, since it's all individual-coded drivers and such, but has the least likely to go wrong.
Can Macs do all these? Help a gal out here.
Macs can, technically, but you're paying more for less computer. For example, taken directly from the Apple website:
Copy-Pasted from Store
From a quick scan of the site that pre-builds machines, here's the closest equivalent I could make:
PC
So, essentially, you're getting upgraded hardware for $232 if you go PC. Assuming you want to go for a Linux, then knock $83 off of the total price, bringing you to $684.
So, it's all about making an informed decision. You can go cheaper, just understand what you're getting yourself into. No computer will ever be virus-proof, regardless of OS, so it's all about making the proper decisions.
the_tramp: This isn't a statement, I mean it as an honest question to all Mac users...
Why did you buy a Mac as opposed to a PC?
Many reasons :
Performance. Macs are really performant computers and they always have been. Go to Apple.com and look up the Mac Pro, it's insane.
Not unlike any computer which you're willing to pay for. The more you pay,the better it is (of sorts) regardless of OS.
Esthetics. They also do look pretty nice and sleek.
Aren't all operating systems? Few would buy an Operating System that was as utilitarian as a DOS screen. In this respect I would say the appearance to declare superiority is subjective.
Annoyance. Vista vs. Mac OS X. That's all i got to say.
Way to go, Captian Obvious! You've saved the day again!
Service. Apple has a great warranty and they replace almost without question. Not only that, they now will transfer all your files from your PC to a Mac when you make the purchase of one, free of charge.
Then again I like my files the way they are in mostly RAW formats, or windows proprietary codec-compressed files.
Marketing. I will admit I'm a slave to marketing, so are alot of people. And Apple knows how to present their stuff.
How does that mean they perform or "are" better? I hear all this hearsay that Macs are the way of the future and are bette but never ever hear any convincing arguments that they truly are other than monstrous sales figures. I for one am not falling into the fallacy.
Did i mention that most people who deny that Apple makes great computers are either ignorant, stupid or both? I think we have a good example of one of those people now. Thanks TheGhostOfSin.
Get some information, and make a counter-argument that makes sense. This thread was made for just that Discussion on Macs. You can defend them or say that they suck. but we want reasons.
Oh, you're one of those people.
You said I couldn't deny something and I did, you never asked me to give a counter-arguement.
xxcloud417xx: Well, we can't deny that Apple makes great computers.
Yes we can, quite easily.
Then do it. don't say you can.
See. I did that, but you decided it was necessary to call someone stupid and ignorant for having a different opinion than you.
I don't need to justify myself or my opinions to you. Now the mere thought of apple or it's products may fill you with glee and optimism but others don't feel the same and you would do well to remember that.
But you want a reason? Fine, Games for Windows. That is all the reason I need.
You've got a point there. The boy got very overexcited and got rude, and I like the way your logic (accompanied by the face of Mr. Lennon), is actually infallible. He tried to be a smarmy McSmartArse, and failed. I loathe macs, and I love Vista.
Nimbus: Annoyance: The only OS I have used that I thought was worse to use than OSX was Ubuntu. And that was probably because I didn't give Ubuntu a proper try.
You probably didn't give it a solid try, I run Ubuntu. I like it. Well mostly because IT DIDN'T COST A FORTUNE!
i think really its what you use your mac for, i see the mac being used in schools mainly, i have to say there very good when it comes to using instuments with them, but tbh i belive that alot of people will agree when i say that PC's are much better when it comes to games :D
ChristmasChild: And WTF is up with the iPhone commercials with the "magic hand"? O want to see someone using them like they were meant to be used. Mindless, repetetive tapping, screaming in frustration at the dusty screen!
lol i love those adverts "Download files in no time" yea but the file that there downloading in that advert is only a few Kilobytes

You have got to be joking...
Macs aren't immune to viruses. Let's get that piece of fantasy out of the way right now. The deal here is that Macs occupied such a small percentage of the market share that the hackers and other cyber criminals simply wouldn't waste their time developing a virus or program that they'll get next to no use out of.
Back in the olden days when they were first being developed, Windows and the PC platform was intended for office work and financial data where the average Mac was meant as a graphics computer. That still carries over into the modern day. Hackers would target the PC because that's what almost everyone has and that's where the financial data is. Apple didn't actually do a damned thing to make their OS virus proof, they just championed this happy little bit of luck as a benefit for their platform. I guess they may have done that a little too well. Now that there is a significant enough number of Mac computers out there in the public it's now worth the hacker's time to create a bug to go fuck with some poor schmuck using a MacBook. So, simply put, Macs aren't immune to viruses, they just haven't been worth the cyber criminals' time.
Oh, and Apple sure as hell isn't on top of the ball with their software anyway. Look at the iPhone right now. Those things are being hacked into left and right with little resistance.
Nimbus: Annoyance: The only OS I have used that I thought was worse to use than OSX was Ubuntu. And that was probably because I didn't give Ubuntu a proper try.

Yeah, you're right. I didn't give it a solid try. i only used it because I accidentally deleted all my drivers in windows. Don't ask :/

This isn't a Mac supremacist wank, as many of you seem to think. I figured that this was a discussion. So non-Mac users, please circle-jerk somewhere else. Thank you.
EDIT: See Anarchemitis' post. Then, can we re-rail this thread?
My preference has always been with the PC, mainly from a gaming perspective. I will admit that I do like the Mac for one reason: graphics editing. I'm a photographer and an artist and programs like Photoshop and Illustrator work very well on the average iMac. That's the kind of thing that Apple originally intended the Macs for in the first place. Of course, my PC can run both those programs just as effectively as any Mac can with the added benefit of also being able to run all of my games and any Windows-based applications.
I'm actually a Linux guy, but I'll hazard a post here (*Braces self*):
