Maybe I'm missing something but is the book targeted at girls? I hear very few positive responses from guys (as seen in this thread), but most of them are in their 'teens. It seems to me like it hit high schoolers the hardest. Maybe a younger audience (Jr. High) would yield a higher response from both parties (guys and gals)? Anyway, joined to say that. I got to the part where the main vampire sparkles in the sunlight, shut the book, winged it across the room and immediately picked up Shadows Linger by Glen Cook to distract me from the trash I had wasted half a day reading. |

A werewolf book would suck too Guy 1-"Dude you know what's awesome?" although I'm pretty sure if you replaced all the werewolves in there with vampires you'd get the exact conversation that spawned twilight.. |

I mean, I have no intention of reading/watching Twilight, but that's because it just doesn't appeal to me, and I haven't heard anything from friends or the Internet to dissuade me otherwise. For example, I really liked the Harry Potter novels. It really bothered me when people would pronounce judgment on them without having read them. Just move on, guy.
I don't really get some of your argument here. Twilight wasn't necessarily well-received by critics, even if it did make a crapton of money. It currently posts a 56/100 on Metacritic. That's not that great. Furthermore, that's a pretty sweeping statement claiming that "well-received movies aren't that good." I mean, clearly someone (actually, a lot of someones) think that those movies are really good. Critics aren't right all the time, but there's gotta be something to what they're saying. Oh, and I loved There Will Be Blood. Great acting, interesting and epic story, GREAT soundtrack. What's not to like? |
Beat Writer Posts: 172 Joined: 2 Jul 2008 | I liked There Will Be Blood, too...and No Country for Old Men, as well. That one was awesome. But back to twilight. I don't hate it. I just pay no attention to it. It's hard sometimes, but it gets easier when you remember it's just a fad and that it isn't nearly endearing enough to have the lasting appeal of a classic. |

That was a great video, but sadly, he no longer makes them. PS. His name's Wayne. |

Yeah, that's a shame, but SWAIM's new series seems to make up for it, along with Net_Work. Not quite as funny though. |

I just don't find the story compelling, nothing happens untill the end when he confronts his son and then kill the priest. Although you're right about the acting and soundtrack. |

Which is exactly why the book sells so much! It's disgusting! She needs to stop nagging your friend or I will personally come and tell her she needs to program a brain for herself. Edward watches Bella sleep at night when she doesn't know he's there via window. |

Sorry for picking Gremily SUCKS,I thought by Gremily, you meant extremely, and were trying to say that Twilight extremely sucks. :S Sorry. Sad thing: Twilight sold better than James Bond, and James Bond ACTUALLY has a scene were he is naked with this secretary [is UberAmazing]. But I do agree,it's just pathetic. The only cool vampires in video games/books/movies/etc. [besides Dracula] are The Family from Fallout 3. They eat corpses... That is just amazing. By the way, HP Lovecraft FTW. and Fallout 3 FTW! |

Although it does bug me a lot mainly because Twilight is apparently better than 1984 according to the people who read Twilight; if they know who George Orwell is (which is a grand total of zero). |

Press Junketeer Posts: 484 Joined: 30 Jan 2008 | I have read all four books and I genuinely like the series. I started reading it because my girlfriend was reading it and she wanted someone to talk to about it, so I figured I would read it so we could discuss it. It helped that I hugely enjoy vampire lore myself. The movie deviates from the book a bit, but keeps the feeling from the book, so I felt it was rather well done. Everything fits well and the casting was well done. As for the "eight sex scenes" the OP talks about, they do not exist. While sex does get alluded to, it isn't until the last book, and they don't describe it, just that it happened. The target market for this book is young adult, so that sort of content wouldn't be in the book anyhow. Overall, it's a series that attracts many people because it is well written and the characters are believable. |

I find it ridiculous. |

My friend read the book because we both want to see the movie (out of curiosity, hot guy and VAMPIRES come-on) and she said she wishes she could shut they girl up about the little girl love "ohhh he's so beautiful", especially considering it's like half the book... but alas we'll both still see the movie, completely realizing how incredibly lame the love story is. It's a pop love story and it has vampires. Yes it's been done and for some reason it's crack to the female fantasy horror fans. Buffy, Angel, True Blood, Moonlight.... OH THE LIST GOES ON! |

...that's truly horrible. I've read the first book (as Lima just mentioned) and enjoyed it to a certain extent. But the book HAS to be taken with a grain of salt. Its really over the top. I mean, /half/ the book (at least it felt like half) is devoted to describing Edward's perfection and god-like. I mean, really, gimme a break. But I just rolled my eyes and continued on because the story was entertaining enough to accommodate a fair amount of cheese. |

I agree of course with the grain of salt... the gf is just falling victim to her fantasies. He's the standard cheesy love ideal. |

Copy Clerk Posts: 110 Joined: 12 Nov 2008 | Interview with the vampire and Bram Stoker's Dracula, the only two vampire movies and books ever done right. Vampires are a difficult thing to write about because vampires are hypotheticly beings who have lived for centuries. So how would they adapt to the ever changeing world? Where would the bodies go? A vampire would have to hide them very well or get rid of them one way or another and after a couple centuries I'm sure they would pile up somewhere and be found and raise questions. If your born in the 15th century, how do you ajust to the bombardment of changes of entering the 20th century? You would also lose your sense of humanity over the years and become something else entirely, unable to relate to the human experiance. Twilight is so flawed in that the vampire is three hundred years old dateing a 15 year old girl, what is it the vampire is falling in love with? Innocence? After three hundred years personally, I would see her as a chocolet milkshake with sprinkles, so why would I date it? Yes we all love our junk food but come on, when was the last time you fell head over heals in love with a bag of potato chips? |

Ok, that is hilarious. I definitely agree with you about Interview with a Vampire. I haven't read Dracula but heard it was well done. Also,I really fought being the one to point this out, the main vampire has 'only' been turned for 80 years. The three hundred year old vampire is his adopted father. The main chick is 17. But you're right. All the things he seems to love about her have to do with her being human... making me wonder what will happen once she becomes a vampire. Which seems inevitable. |

Yeah I listed that in one of my previous posts but do you think it falls under the category of SOAP OPERA? |

Being a teenage girl I have to say this Twilight was a good book and I completely understand why anyone who's not a girl would hate it. It was not great but most people hate it because it has a large fan base but when you read it you find its average. "everything in it has been done before and better" The story was done before and its written so simple and inartistic that a third grader could read it, its not bad its just simple book for simple people. If your going to hate it at least read it first Also the movie was great the acting was so horrible it had me laughing the entire way through, also to clarify in the book their is no sex scene it skips over that so yes they do have sex no it does not go into detail. (Also if you want a valid point of why is sucks the vampires glitter in sunlight they don't burst in the flames cuz sparkling is so much cooler)
