White Rabbit by Jefferson Airplane. I'm not sure if it's anti-drug or pro-drug, but it's a good song.

OP has also forgotten the influence of drugs on many of the Romantic poets. Sure, the consequences are unpleasant, but they played such a massive part in the formation of our culture today.

I think this song is solely responsible for ALL the UK's drug issues since it was first aired. No exceptions.

That video raped my mind then flushed it down a toilet just to watch it get raped by passing dogs.

Just you wait, you'll be shooting speedballs within a week just to numb the pain of having heard that song.

aggreed.
metal would be a lot harder to write on drugs, cos it demands a lot more skill of the players than most genres of music; being doped up on drugs would just make em sloppy players;

Thats why no famous metal bands have been on drugs whatsoever. No, not one single band I can think of has ever played well or written good music on drugs.

My favorite is still "Powder" By Yellowcard

"Lying soaked in sweat tonight
Your knuckles white
You try to fight
The need for more to get you by
You've had enough you wonder why
Even now your body cries
For chemicals to blind your eyes
Wonder can you stay this high
When the cells begin to die
Forever, forever, forever"

"Swallowed like the medicine
That's broken down my happy friend
Wonder if he'll let me in
If I come to see him when
He's better, He's better, He's better"

GENIUS

Oh yes, Sting was quite the stoner. The years have NOT been kind to that gentleman. He was always SO high when he played his heart and soul out on the stage...

Some musicians did drugs, some musicians are still alive, and some musicians are Kieth Richards. You just have to categorize.

Pie, I have to agree with you on that. While I despise some RHCP songs with all my heart, (can't stop, californication, ect.) the band has some talent...

Elvis died on the toilet in his 50's. I doubt he had much of anything left in him except those last 4 fried banana sandwiches. And exactly ZERO of the Beatles died from drugs. John was shot, George had a stroke, and Paul and Ringo are still kicking. Are you sure you know your music history?

And strokes DON'T increase their risk when you are taking pills by the bottleful?

Dream Police by Cheap Trick

It's not outwardly about drugs, but I always thought of it as a song about paranoa and insanity that could be interpreted as drug-caused

That's just me though

dream police is an awesome song, but my favorite anti-drug song is Drug Train by Social Distortion.

GOLDENNN BROWWWNNNN, TEXTURE LIKE SUNNN.

The Stranglers - Golden Brown, best use of a harpsichord i've ever heard, and bonus points for someone who can tell me what they are talking about (easy enough).

I'll take that over most (not all) of the crap coming out since the 60's.

Great Balls of Fire was a good ol' song! Yet I doubt more that 10% of any of you have heard of it...

I'm in the 10%.

OT:Straight Edge-Minor Threat.

How is MoP about Drugs?

I wouldn't know about ani-drug songs. When I saw that I thought those crappy commercials on TV with ludacris analouges to smoking.

Drugs are an unfortunate part of our society. At least sometimes though, a band has enough sense to strike out against them in the form of songs. Name these bands, and win the general respect of the Escapist community.

Powder
Cocaine (Yes this IS anti-drug)
Your turn (If you say semi-charmed life i will rip your nipples off...)

sorry, but some of the greatest music ever written wouldn't have happened without recreational drugs... don't get me wrong, most street drugs are very harmful and cause nothing but pain and destruction, but c'mon... where would pink floyd, the beatles, alice in chains, NIN, and nirvana (to name but a few) be without drugs? granted, most of these stories end tragically, but without pain as at least a point of reference, most art is pretty shallow...

EDIT: the only anti-drug song that sprang immediately to mind was Lie Still, Little Bottle by They Might Be Giants.....

I think you will find that that 'song' was in the first reply posted :p

In addition I would like to mention pretty much anything by Alice in Chains. Not really anti or pro drug, just telling it like it is, except for the poetic angstyness.

PS What did you (OP) want to discuss exactly? You just asked for the 'best' anti drugs song people know of (although in my case I promptly posted the worst).

Oh, good one. Though I'm a bit partial to Johnny Cash's cover. It's wickedly haunting, and a bit more soulful. You know it?

You me and Bill Hicks.

All pro or anti drug opinions aside, my 'proper' response to this thread would have to be:

Whoops, I OD'd
by NoFx
off The War on Errorism

Now a brief bit of opinion. While drugs can and have done harm, have ended great bands/musicians/poets etc long before their time, they are also undeniably responsible for inspiring aforementioned bands/musicians/poets for most of the length of TIME ITSELF.

Pro moderation anti prohibition.

You do realize that recreational use of Marijuana and Cocaine goes back WELL into the B.C. era, right?
