there's probably little you can do to calm him short of drugging him, and i don't recommend doing that unless he's in danger of hurting himself or others... it's well a documented fact that many animals seem to exhibit a "sixth sense" for impending storms, earthquakes, tsunamis and the like, so from your dog's perspective this my be totally normal behavior... about the best suggestion i can think of is to try distracting him... try playing a favorite game or toy, or maybe a favored treat will take his mind off of it... you may also try moving him to a room that doesn't have any windows or doors, if one is available at your residence... but, if all else fails, just comforting him with a pat and some praise will probably make him/her feel at least a little better... |

It works, Loud noises and bright colours would scare most animals. User was banned for: Ketchup Packets... Why in the heck are they sooo small?. (Permanent) |

Pulitzer Laureate Posts: 979 Joined: 25 Sep 2008 | The only dogs I'm afraid of are people who says "Dawgs". Ooh, right. This is about the dog's phobia. Hm. Okay. The same way as in that Family Guy episode? Where Peter taught Meg to "love a man's gas" in a closed car with the windows up? .. But with lightning and less smelly air, of course. |

good tip but i couldn't fail to notice: you may also try moving him to a room that doesn't have any windows or doors, if one is available at your residence... |

Hope that helps. And if it doesn't...well....I hope you film it and post it on YouTube. It's a win-win really... |

Sit down, hang out and coax the dog closer if they are running around. Impressing your relaxed mental state on the dog is the closest thing to a solution. |

How did you get dogs if recon planes can't fly in a storm? Hacks? User was banned for: Microsoft and the World Domination of Gaming&Communication. (Permanent) |

Gone Gonzo Posts: 1155 Joined: 23 Jul 2008 | When i was dogsitting for a neighbour, they said to just carry on as if everything was normal. The dog will be reassured by the fact you're taking no action. Giving it attention will probably only exacerbate the situation. |

What they said. Dogs will only get more upset if you hug or try & comfort them. Canines percieve this kind of behaviour as weakness in the pack leader..you. Ignore them or show them it is nothing to be afraid of. If you are in charge in your pack, which you should be, then your dog should follow your lead. Time, effort & firm but loving authority is what dogs need. |

Gone Gonzo Posts: 1615 Joined: 4 Jul 2008 | I heard that you can desensitize them bye playing a recording of a storm very quietly then slowly turning it up over time until it dosn't bother them. |

Woah! Sounds like you and your pooch need some help there. You should get in touch with a Canine Psychologist or Trainer. Aggression should never be left to manifest in your dog...bad owner...sit. |

Been there, done that. I think the only reason we have these problems are because we got him 2-3 weeks before we should have picked him up... Long story short, Bad farmer -Drowned Puppies - We saved him, the dog - He lost a lot of skills he would have picked up from his parents... |

I know that this video game review website is a trove on information for treating dog phobia so I ask you escapists; how do I fix my dog of its fear of storms. The dog is currently running around the house panting and moaning because a storm is coming, so if you have an easy answer please tell me before the storm hits.
