Dog Phobia

I know that this video game review website is a trove on information for treating dog phobia so I ask you escapists; how do I fix my dog of its fear of storms. The dog is currently running around the house panting and moaning because a storm is coming, so if you have an easy answer please tell me before the storm hits.

I would suggest drugs.

Most dogs do this....mine did.

I'm not an expert on dogs, but I do know that if someone is afraid or distraught, I give them a hug and stay close to them.

there's probably little you can do to calm him short of drugging him, and i don't recommend doing that unless he's in danger of hurting himself or others... it's well a documented fact that many animals seem to exhibit a "sixth sense" for impending storms, earthquakes, tsunamis and the like, so from your dog's perspective this my be totally normal behavior...

about the best suggestion i can think of is to try distracting him... try playing a favorite game or toy, or maybe a favored treat will take his mind off of it... you may also try moving him to a room that doesn't have any windows or doors, if one is available at your residence...

but, if all else fails, just comforting him with a pat and some praise will probably make him/her feel at least a little better...

It works, Loud noises and bright colours would scare most animals.

I am afraid and/or distraught

Where is Cesar when you need him?

My dog does this, but she's terrified of everything.

You can't really stop it, just close all the windows, turn the radio up to full volume, that kind of thing.

The only dogs I'm afraid of are people who says "Dawgs".

Ooh, right. This is about the dog's phobia. Hm. Okay.

The same way as in that Family Guy episode? Where Peter taught Meg to "love a man's gas" in a closed car with the windows up? .. But with lightning and less smelly air, of course.

Dogs hate storms, if it's anything like mine used to be, close the windows and curtains, lock it in one or two rooms and give it company.
short of drugging it (or knocking it out with a big stick) you won't stop it being terrified, but it'll be much happier with someone else to reassure it.

Almost all dogs do this, just get it a blanket in a corner or under a bed and he/she will lie there. Thats what I do for my dog.

Mine is scared of Fireworks, I don't think there's anything you can do apart from huggle it.

Give them a place to hide. My cats will hide the moment a storm kicks off. They'll be scared but as long as their under something but near us they're okay.

That's normal for dogs. Very few dogs aren't scared of storms. They can be desensitized (making them used to loud noises) but it can take months to do.

good tip but i couldn't fail to notice: you may also try moving him to a room that doesn't have any windows or doors, if one is available at your residence...
How would you get the dog into the room if there are no windows or doors?

haha, poor wording on my part! basically, you need to build the room around the dog... LOL, thanks for that, it made my morning!

Mush up his widdle face and call him Chips

Yahtzee quotes aside, just stay near em and they will be fine for the most part.

Cover it in mustard, then shave it. Once the storm hits, make sure to play "I got you Babe" by Sonny and Cher on repeat. Hope that helps. And if it doesn't...well....I hope you film it and post it on YouTube. It's a win-win really...

How many tuned in reading the thread's title as "Fear of Dogs"?

To the OP: not much that can be done. Sit down, hang out and coax the dog closer if they are running around. Impressing your relaxed mental state on the dog is the closest thing to a solution.

Strangely, my old dog didn't dislike storms, in fact he would sit out on the porch (under an overhang so he didn't get wet) and watch the lightning.

How did you get dogs if recon planes can't fly in a storm? Hacks?

Some dogs don't mind storms, but most do.

My dog did that. The thing that cured her is that she went deaf. I don't know what you can do, but muffling what the dog hears may help it.

When i was dogsitting for a neighbour, they said to just carry on as if everything was normal. The dog will be reassured by the fact you're taking no action. Giving it attention will probably only exacerbate the situation.

I honestly can't say, but I have a phobia of cats, my sister threw one at me, so when it wouldn't let go, I started to run around trying to get it off. Come to think of it, that is a funny mental image...

What they said. Dogs will only get more upset if you hug or try & comfort them. Canines percieve this kind of behaviour as weakness in the pack leader..you. Ignore them or show them it is nothing to be afraid of. If you are in charge in your pack, which you should be, then your dog should follow your lead. Time, effort & firm but loving authority is what dogs need.

I can't really say much as my dog is aggressive with his food, aggressive towards me when he doesn't want fuss and he chases shadows -.-
If i can say anything it would be that you should just settle him down...
Good luck :)

I heard that you can desensitize them bye playing a recording of a storm very quietly then slowly turning it up over time until it dosn't bother them.

Woah! Sounds like you and your pooch need some help there. You should get in touch with a Canine Psychologist or Trainer. Aggression should never be left to manifest in your dog...bad owner...sit.

Been there, done that.
We've followed a lot of advice from Psychologists, trainers and even tried some of the stuff from The Dog Whisperer.
To be honest we are trying one more thing before we consider the old, you know what.
He's a great dog, very clever and he's very loved, i really made out that he was a hell dog tbh, but its just this aggression.
Currently we're ignoring him at a moderate level, still the occasional "Hello" to the dog but we're not giving him any fuss and we're not letting him take over us.
We are now the boss and he needs to realize it.

I think the only reason we have these problems are because we got him 2-3 weeks before we should have picked him up... Long story short, Bad farmer -Drowned Puppies - We saved him, the dog - He lost a lot of skills he would have picked up from his parents...
