There are other people out there with no moral compass whatsoever, to which every action is only a risk/gain ratio. In my example the thief didn't have to steal, it was just more convinient. There are people like that. There are people to whom human life is just a statistic, and money is another one. They know killing is wrong, but as long as it nets them money, that's okay, screw the rest. They don't think they're doing the right thing. They know they're doing something immoral. You're talking about normal people. People that aren't screwed up, and whose intentions are in the right place. You're talking about people with a moral compass. There are both people without a moral compass whatsoever (psychopaths for example, and some other disabilities) and people who just don't give a damn. Then there's also the people who believe their own satisfaction from something normal society considers wrong is more important than doing what's right. A rapist doesn't believe that raping someone is the right thing to do, or that it's not wrong. That it's wrong becomes secondary. It's not the best thing to do at the time, it's just more pleasurable than not doing it. The same logic could be applied to people cheating on their spouses or partners. Sure, they know it's wrong, they know it's not necessary, but it's exciting, and fun. And that becomes more important. That's two different examples of setting morals aside. In the second example because what's right or wrong is secondary to other things. In the first example because morals just aren't important enough. I'd hate to burst your bubble. If you want to keep believing everyone, especially in both RL and fiction, is a nice person that always tries to do the right thing, then sure. Keep it up. Just watch out becase there's some really fucked up people out there who couldn't care less if they're doing something wrong. And if they're smart enough to KNOW they're doing something wrong, they're even worse. I won't respond anymore. I've made my points clear enough already. And whatever you may want to believe doesn't really matter, on this subject. This isn't personal beliefs we're debating. |

... well that was random. Psychosis is generally a mental disorder when somebody has a very poor grip on reality resulting in mental derangement. |
Gone Gonzo Posts: 1185 Joined: 17 Jun 2008 | Mental illness in different variations is always fun. Psychosis can be among the more interesting ones, but it takes a DAMN good writer to do it. Most people just come up with something really boring when they try. |

First part right, it indeed is a poor grip on reality. Resulting in mental derangement? Both archaic and completely wrong. You're already insane if you experience psychosis. More importantly, it doesn't result in "evil" behavior more often than other mental disorders do. The chances are you're a kook yelling on a soapbox much more likely than you're a villain. Psychopathy, accurately summarized as "a lack of conscience", is a much better way to explain "evil", even though it makes for utterly boring villains. |

But mostly it's just me. As a kid I always rooted for Cobra over GI Joe....or Darth Vader over Luke. Good is too boring for me. Plus KotOR spoiled me to always want that choice. |

See the problem with what you just did is you did the classic mistake all "goody two shoes" do. You say a little speech and you attack and walk away thinking you've defeated the villain. This thread is too evil to be destroyed by your measly nuke. *Laughs maniacally... pauses for the other posters to laugh along with him* (You better laugh with me or there will be hell to pay!) |

because of that. Or if you paid me enough. Also, I like villains I can sympathise with, ones that have a back story and a reason for being the way they are. Or ones that see themselves as the good guys and are not evil from malice but from perspective. |
Muckraker Posts: 267 Joined: 4 Dec 2008 | Ultimate power. It's all a real villain wants. They can say they just do it because it's fun but that is ultimate power. You just do what you want. It's the same like sefless actions. There is no such thing. Everything you do is because somehow you get better for it. |

Press Junketeer Posts: 414 Joined: 11 May 2008 | Who needs an excuse? Villains have 10 times more fun, can kill anyone they don't like, do anything they want and basically have ultimate power up until the point a young child heralded as a prophet savior comes along and accidentally trips over and sticks a knife if your back. But even if you die young, its always best to be evil. I'd rather rule for a day with ultimate power than spent a lifetime as someone normal. |

That reeks of democracy. How about this? You accept me as your lord and master, bow down and worship me as the technological God I will become, or I'll blast you and your entire city into rubble. |
Gone Gonzo Posts: 3481 Joined: 6 Nov 2008 | Destruction brings happiness. I don't know why, but it's much more appealing to me to burn something than build something and I do believe I need help for this but most people would choose the former. In Fallout 3, it's more fun (in my opinion) to blow off a raider's head than deliver a letter to someone's family and if you don't agree with me you must be mental. |

I like a villain whose motivation is kept secret. The G-man from Half Life 2 is my favorite villain, and I still have no idea why he keeps messing with the situation that humanity is going through. He did say that "it will all make sense in the course of, well... I'm really not at liberty to say. In the meantime, this is where I get off". I really can't wait to see the ending to the half life series.
