Why is there an entire thread devoted to this one episode? Wasn't there an unofficial Doctor Who discussion thread?

Why are people going insane over what is clearly a bad episode? Who gives a shit about cannon - the episode was awful regardless, no need to even go into accuracy.

Frankly, I'm surprised they didn't just write it off as an alternate universe again, at least then we wouldn't have to worry about why everyone was surprised about the existence of aliens.

That said, really, does this deserve a new thread?

Because it's the_root_of_all_evil we're talking about, the most prominent Doctor Who fan on the entire forum, and he notes that he's been watching since the Second Doctor. That's a long time.

Anyway, as a Christmas special, it was pretty good. It was well-paced, IMO, which was all I was really looking for after the ending to the last series. It didn't make any canonical sense, of course, but I suppose we'll get back to better things when Moffat takes over.

At the risk of incuring Roots wrath may I point out that Troughton era cybermen and the ones in the current series are not the same Cybermen. I was under the impression that the new itteration of cybers are from an alternative reality and not from space.

RTD wanted to reintroduce them without any of the baggage of canon and the cybers have a slightly more rigid place in the canon than the Daleks who have been moving through time at the whim of writers since the year dot.

So whilst the historical ideas were really poor the temporal mechanics were broken and the acting was a little wooden but criticising cybers now based on there origin is like comparing The Prisoner and Eastenders.

And Im feeling pink as a pistol, good lord I cant even form a cogent similie!

:P We all have our little predilections, and I only started one of them. Look at the number of Twilight threads. We just LOVE to have a good dissection.

Yeh, they are Parallel Dimension Cybermen, but as I was discussing with others, that's like having Parallel Dimension Daleks that are good guys. It brings in people due to the canon, but then throws it back in their face.

Even with all the changes, they are still logical machines; and half of the episode was filled full of logical holes that you could drive a Star-Destroyer through.

When people really enjoy a show, it's because of the main villain being not just evil, but smart, funny and preferably attractive. Dervla/Cybermen scored 1 out of 4.

"The Next Doctor" felt like the Borg had come back to the Victorian Era and then been slayed by a cold germ.

Oh, and Electric, you're comparing The Prisoner and Eastenders? You do know that no-one leaves Albert Square...and they're always asking to "'ave a word".

Wotcha, numbah six.

I wasn't even excited for this episode. Well, a little, but that's only due to the fact that I'm a big fan of the series. I'd just prefer a bit of a break from Cybermen and Daleks, and resurrect a few other classic Dr. Who enemies.

I'm a big fan of Tennant though, and it'll be difficult to adjust to a new doctor. But then again it was the same with Eccleston, and I got over that. (Northern pride. Gets me every time.)

I'm not a Doctor Who fan at all, but even I knew that it was pretty inconsistent with the whole Cybermen thing.

And I'd like to point out that he has been a woman before (I think). But we don't tend to count the film I suppose.

I never wish to correspond with you again for likening my beloved prisoner to that depressing pile of poop. I know I started it but if you continue the comparison stating that patrick Mcgoohan and Dot Cotton bare resemblance!

Happy new year

He was a woman in "The Curse of the Fatal Death", but that was a spoof. There was also the parallel universe adventure where Arabella Weir played the Doctor.

The plot was rubbish. Just plain rubbish. I've enjoyed all the other cybermen plotlines, but this one seemed to sort of fizzle out.
And to top it off, the name of the episode was very misleading in the end.

I don't know why people get really worked up over these things.
I'm a big Who fan and thought the episode wasn't great, but hey, I enjoyed it for what it was. Just a christmas special.

More like 6.10 at this rate. Get on with it Doctor Who confidential, I wasn't expecting a documentary about the modernisation of Doctor Who.

I think he looks pretty good as the Doctor, but we will just have to wait and see.

I'm a little apprehensive, but after an episode I'll say, "Oh, he's good. I like him." Then the balance will be restored, and nearly nobody will mind. At least, that's what's happened with every other regeneration.

I'm definitely going to have to just wait and see on this doctor as I've never seen him in anything so don't know what he will be like. My only complaint is that they went with a young doctor again as it would have been nice to see an older doctor.

Yeah, though he has something old about him.

That's the new Doctor!?! Blehh!! I don't like him already.

And now I have a new theory; RTD is deliberately killing the show because he knows everyone is looking forward to Steven Moffat taking over.

Also, that christmas special was cack. Everything looked good up until...

He looks a lot younger than he is, but I still think the doctor should be mid thirties as a bare minimum. I didn't particularly like the way he came across in the interview, but I'll withold judgement until I see an episode. Can't see me warming to him though.

I'm optimistic about the new Doctor because, well, it feels good to beoptimistic occasionally. My main turn off is his posh accent. Is that not a bit... old fashioned?

Wasn't it Moffat who cast the new Doctor?

Being honest though, I think I was the only person who thought David Tennant was overrated. I didn't see the big fuss myself.

Meh, everyone says that to begin with he will probably do fine, they chose the last ten doctors fine didn't they?

Yes, but the other doctors looked right at least. Have you seen those cheeks? It looks like he hasn't eaten in a month. I've talked to several people and all their reactions have been "eww"s or "hell no"s. Maybe that's just the company I keep...

I thought the same thing about David Tennant. But you'll get used to him.

From what I can tell, it was Piers Wenger who picked him.

And I don't like the looks of the guy either... ah well, with Moffat as head writer, it'd be kind of hard to fail.

We will not tolerate failure. But...I quite like him. Even if he was a little incestuous last time. ;)

The Grudinaa did quite a good piece on him.

Hmm...I'm quiet optimistic about this guy. I quite liked him in "The Ruby in the Smoke", but thats a very different character. Most people say they don't like the new doctor at first, then warm to him. He'll have to a pretty good job to beat David Tennant though, he's my doctor.

btw, on topic, the last episode was really, truelly terrible. Doctor Who has these episodes from time to time, then it'll throw something like The Library or The child in the gas mask at you and it all seems better again.

Oh GOD yes. When 'equality' decides it's time to break harmless inoffensive tradition, that's when I break out of my tolerance zone and start killing feminists with a spade.
