Whilst the "Dead Kennedys" still tour, they're really not the same band anylonger, they kicked their lead singer (Jello Biafra) after the first breakup, and has since "sold out" to the extreme, employing lawsuits (the lawsuit concerned the fact that the "new" kennedys wanted to use the "Holiday in Cambodia" song for a Levi's commercial, a company known to use sweatshop labor) and signig to huge corporate labels (including Coca-Cola), completley going against everything that the "original" Dead Kennedys stood for. Very sad story, they used to make such awesome music, perfect lyrics, awesome message... R.I.P |

Muckraker Posts: 235 Joined: 4 Aug 2008 | Some bands I think have a similar sound to "classic rock": Queens Of The Stone Age - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V5ivZ-4DmPY That's pretty much what immediately comes to mind. Those might not be the best songs by each band, but if you browse around you should find plenty of good stuff by all of them. You might've even heard of them all, no idea. Now, if you just want to broaden your horizons a little... Flobots - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AuK2A1ZqoWs But yeah, I don't really like a lot of new music either. None of the bands I listed are newer than 4 or 5 years. |

It's probably because we like rock. Pretentiousness is unbecoming, my friend. |

I (and plenty of people out there) like rock and aren't rockists. Is your world shattered now? User was banned for: Microsoft and the World Domination of Gaming&Communication. (Permanent) |

What is a rockist, then? (it's dented irreparably) --- To be honest, it's a term I've never heard before, so let me lay out a bit of explanation: If a musician really likes some music, I believe it will variably influence his/her output. This makes most genres not as dead as people like to think. You should check out Wolfmother if you think classic rock is dead. I'd point you toward Immortal Technique and The Roots for some hip-hop which is largely out of he mainstream, and Gogol Bordello's still rocking out in the spirit of punk. You could respond that these bands are shit, but that wouldn't really contribute to the argument since it's just a subjective statement. The argument is that something so wide-reaching as a music genre will live on in one way or another. The fact that the 60's, 70's and 80's are mere decades away makes it way to early for me to say anything about the aforementioned genres claiming that they're completely gone. Not many people listen to classical music anymore. Saying that it's dead is just as ludicrous. |

Press Junketeer Posts: 441 Joined: 14 Nov 2007 | Ah, ok. I'm not one either. We're good. Excuse me. I assumed a rockist is someone who merely holds rock as a favourite genre. However, it is still a matter of taste to say that at some point, people got music right and then never again. I know many who would say the same of classical music, though it is gone from the mainstream of today, relegated to radio and film scores. I am one to say that the LA Philharmonic is the best thing I've ever seen in terms of musicianship. I won't say that I'm a 'classicist.' Everything changes. I also won't give people shit for liking something that I don't. Tone down the aggression. |

Oh my god, I almost died. Someone who listens to The Killers is saying Say Anything is emo. bahahahahahaha The Killers are true punk, huh bro? Now I've seen it all, I can go in peace. For the record, listen to anything pre-In Defense of the Genre (specifically Baseball) and you will find SA is one of the most punk bands that ever lived. Max Bemis is God. |

Especially their later stuff, albums like Robot Hive/Exodus and From Beale Street to Oblivion. Here are songs you might like - And they're right up there when it comes to meaning and lyrical integrity. All the lyrics for their songs are listed on their website (http://pro-rock.com/v6/main.html). I don't pretend to understand it all, but just take a look. |

And when do you find it, who says you're gonna like it? Like I said earlier, the 60's 70's and 80's are over. And that SUCKS. |

I don't know how to describe it,but does anyone know any bands like Apocalyptica or the Trans Siberian Orchestra? Bands that take Classical and put in a very modern spin. |

Hang on, what if he just doesn't like rap? I only listen to one or two genres of metal, not because i have narrow taste, but because it's the only music i like. I can't help it, i've tried to 'broaden my horizons', but i don't like anything else. I hate it when people say stuff like this, people can't help what music they like, they can't force themselves to like other music.
That's not entirely true. They started just doing metallica covers, but they right loads of their own stuff now. Listen to their albums 'Cult' and 'Worlds Collide'. |

Exactly, and I live in Downtown Chicago, so it couldn't any more forced on than it already is, and I refuse to give in to that "Gansta" bull shit. |

The way you complain about the music being put out now, then the music you say you listen to... I think you need to broaden your horizons unfortunately. |

I'm going to start recommending everyone to Last.fm I listened for 20 minutes, found 4 new bands that sound great and 5 or 6 songs I've never heard from bands I already like. |

Press Junketeer Posts: 488 Joined: 29 Nov 2008 | I love 80s music. When pop & rap were all the rage in 1998 & the only thing a singer needed was looks & zero talent, I started listening to music from other countries, partly because I hate love songs & that's pretty much all anyone sings about. I like rock & techno from Japan, Korea, Russia, Romania, Sweeden, & to a lesser degree, some German Metal, Mexican Mariachi, & Jamaican Reggae (can't understand a word they say). The UK has good techno, as long as they don't sing in it (okey, so that makes it trance). & back in the 90s, Korea had GOOD hip-hop & pop, but that went bye-bye in 2001. I miss Synthpop! Bring it back! ;_; Rap is not music to me because there is no actual singing. If they were singing, it would be hip-hop. Hip-Hop is music & Rap isn't. Don't care for Country either. |

QFT. I love certain Rap music (Gangsta Rap like Mack 10, XZibit, and anything similar to Tupac) but can't shit like Soldiaboy or whatever his fucking name is. (THAT is not rap. That is Shit. Just like Britney Spears is Shit.) Personally, my favorite band of all time (Foreigner) has a bunch of CDs but can't release new music because their lead singer had throat cancer. No offense, but his voice was WAAAAAAY better than anyone from Journey, AC/DC, Guns 'n Roses, Metallica, or anyone else. And I like those other bands. Modern rock sounds like guys just slamming their fingers into random strings at a set time. Just never got into it, but I don't call it shit. Pop music on the other hand, is an unmitigated wasteland of shit and American Idol rejects spewing the same thing over and again. IT SUCKS. And again, their are exceptions. Hell, I have Pocket Full of Sunshine by Natasha Bedingfield on my hard drive. But yes, I find your opinion uneducated and uninformed. Please Mature your tastes. Funny how every time a new generation comes a long the kids love it but the parents sit back and say 'Whats is this crap you kids are listening too? Back in my day we had REAL music!'
It happened with Rock'n'Roll, punk, heavy metal, rap, pop, grunge and so on.
