Fuck yeah, I love tattoos.
As long as it isn't your stereo-typical Chinese lettering or tribal shapes.
I want "Οὖτις ἐμοί γ' ὄνομα" tattooed somewhere on me. It's a line from The Odyssey.
I would also like the story of The Odyssey over my back in pictures.

I love my tattoo :) I have a celtic Thor's Hammer on the top of my left arm. It's ace.

I like them generally but there are plenty of ways to ruin tattoos like
a)getting tribal tattoos despite not coming from an islander or similar background. You just look like a tosser

I like them as long as they aren't completely excessive or unnecessary. I quoted this because I'd like you to help me out here. I'm planning on getting a tattoo of a Maori symbol, and, though I wasn't born in NZ myself, my mother was. Do you think I could avoid appearing like a tosser because of the fact that, though I'm not directly involved with the culture, it is still a large part of my heritage? Also, it's not just something I'm getting plastered onto my body for shits and giggles, it's a significant symbol to me. For those unfamiliar with the Koru, it symbolizes symbolises new life, growth, strength and peace, and is the Maori name given to new born fern leaves, which are still unfurling.

I plan on getting this, and, possibly, if I don't nearly piss myself during the first one, as well as some others, but I'm still yet to decide on whether or not I really want them.

Bububuwha? Someone listened to me?! Good Lord.

But in all seriousness, no you wouldn't look like a tosser. If your heritage plays a major role in your life then go for gold.

WhawhahwhawhawhaWOAH!! Surprising isn't it (hyuk)!? But yeah, it's something that's really a part of my life, and I plan on spending a few years there post secondary in order to learn more about it.

That is THE ONLY CASE tribal symbols make sense, if it's a part of who you are, roll with it. For all I care a red mailbox on your forehead could be cool, if it meant something to you, and you could tell me when I asked you.

How in the Hell did you know about the mailbox!?

Saying this as a tattoo artist, I would say yes tattoo are cool. That being said getting a tattoo of someone's name is just plain stupid, and I tell people that every day. If you are going to get a tattoo it should have a deeper meaning, also make sure you really want to see it every day.

No tattoos yet, but planning a few.
The first I'll get done (when I can afford it) is the inscription of the one ring, from Lord of the Rings in elvish. One couplet a wrist. "One ring to rule them all, one ring to find them;" (left), "One ring to bring them all, and in the darkness bind them." (right)

Also trying to think of something Cyrano de Bergerac related.

I want to get a few tattoos, but as of yet, nothing I can think of would hold any meaning for me. I mean, I could get a celtic symbol to signify my heritage, like my mum did, but everyone gets them, and I don't want to appear to be following a trend.

By the way, does getting a meaningless but humorous tattoo make you a tosser? A monkey face on my belly, with the bellybutton as the mouth would be pretty sweet. I'd probably never do it, but still.

Cool tattoos are cool, crappy or unoriginal tattoos aren't. I don't like tribal tattoos that people get to be trendy, they might look okay but usually make people look like right tossers. Maori tattoos are impressive but only on people who practise the culture. And getting a playboy bunny tattoo'ed onto your arse doesn't suddenly make you stunningly attractive.

I also think that if you get more than one tattoo then unless they are in completely different areas then they should at least complement each other. Having some gnarly flaming-skull-snake-rose combo just below a nice bowl of fruit on your ball-sack just looks silly.

I'm actually going to check out a tattoo place later today to see about getting my first one. Not sure what to get though but it will probably be a lower-arm job. Maybe a flaming tribal playboy bunny if you are lucky.

No, I'm not paying $90 to have a dragon tattoo'd on my long hard veiny....ankle.

It hurts like a bitch when you have to get an MRI with it too.

They're more of a personal preference. They neither add to nor detract from coolness. I never got one, but I've never wanted to be the guy who ages to have tattoos sagging down to his knees.

I like them, I currently have 2, both on my back, just yesterday I realized that I hate the one on my lower back, but meh I'll get over it.

on my entire back, as soon as I start earning for my rent. (Unfortunately i have 6 years of med school before that happens)

I like how some tattoos look, but I like them even more when there is some thoughtfulness or meaning behind them. Doesn't have to be something grand, but a little story behind them apart from "I thought it would look badass/hot" is interesting.

Something small and significant could be cool. But be really carefull about what and where. I know a lass who got angel wings on her lower back in black, and her arse now appears to have a tache.

Tatoos are ok to a point but then that start looking rediculous imagine haveing these tribal desighns and things in your 70's or 80's they will just look rediculous.

I like some of them, it kind of depends on the person and the tatoo. I will never get one though and I'm not a big fan of them on girls.

They generally are, but only if done well. Looks really hot on girls, I find, though loads of people disagree with me. Some are awful from the start, no matter how well they're done, such as:

Tribal bands
Japanese symbols, especially on Westerners
Band names
Movie characters that aren't horror characters
Celebrities

I wanted a tattoo for about 6 years before I finally got one. I wanted to make sure that it meant something to me and wasn't just some generic tattoo. I'm glad I did, because I absolutely love mine. I want another.

I think an ancestral tattoo would be neat. Im planning on getting a 4 leaf clover, considering my irish background.

Cool? No... But a girl with right tatoo on the right place... (like the lower back). It can be very sexy.

Depends. If it's all over the body and extreme, then no. But a tattoo or two is cool.

I think they are cool, I wanted one for myself, either on the chest ( left or right side not the whole chest), arm or upper back and shoulders. Haven't got one yet because I feel that if I'm going to engrave something on my body it needs to have meaning not just style.

Yes, when you're 20.

Not so much when you're 65.

Some tatoos, I find very cool. :]

However, not in excess.

I hate it when people say "Oh the tattoo will look horrible when you're old". Well, yeah, if you just let your body go to hell. But if you take care of yourself it'll look better. And I've never met one, but an old person with a bunch of tattoos would be awesome! It would probably mean they've led an interesting life and have some cool stories to tell.

I think tatoos are great, just as long as you don't overdo it like scofield from prison break.

I love tattoos and I love seeing what other people have. Thus, yes to me tatts are cool. However...having a tattoo (much like a $100k car) doesn't make you cool.

I really do not like Tattoos. Don't see the point of getting one. It costs a lot of money and you can basically never get it off, unless you get it burnt off which hurts like the dickens and cost a bunch.

Yes Tattoo's are awesome if you get them for a good reason.

Also this thread is missing the poll that was advertised in the title.

I rarely appreciate anyone elses tattoos but my own as, I designed mine, so can I understand if only I appreciate them. I think some others are cool as a concept, and if they were temporary, I'd definately have them... But they arent, so I specifically find something I like, and maybe even means something to me (I dont really have to care about real meaning)...
To agree with the herd, yes tribal tattoos and names look pretty shit mostly... I was having my 2nd one done (which took just under 4 hours) and a guy got his daughters name on his arm. Granted, that IS a better option than a gf, or wife as shes not exactly about to leave you, but still doesnt look that good.
I'm also pretty tempted to get a few really small ones across my body. And when I say small, I mean a few cm by a few cm... maybe just the amusing one of "l0lz ^_^"... Trust me... It looks much better in the photo of someone elses :P Plus its literally as big as its written here... So easily hidden...

I like them if they're chosen and executed well. Otherwise they just irritate me either at the artist or the victim.

As for myself, I want several, and I wish to be a tattooist.

I Love my Ink, each one is severely personal, but a humorous one doesn't make you a tosser right off the bat. My mate Doorag has a tat on his arm in Japanese. It translates to "something cool" in English. Cracks me up everytime someone asks. "What's that mean?" "Something cool." "Yeah, but what?" "Something cool." "Yeah but what?" etc...etc...etc...
