Word. but the one thing that makes me mad is when the music changes someone, like an assimilationist. ex: look at what hip hop has done to create "Gangsta" |

I used to like Slipknot but their continual inclusion of lyrical melodies became asesthetically innapropriate, structurally formulaic (ie.. sing songy chorus, growl the rest of the song), and it revealed the juvenile nature of their writing abilities. There are also many bands who can do a lot more with a lot less instruments and without the pretension of rubber masks while always posturing like you're a badass. |

I don't know, I mean Little Wayne's usage of literary devices is pretty impressive. If he swapped out the slang and curse words it would make most English teachers swoon. |

Go away. Nobody needs an internet nanny. (I didn't mean go away literally. I just meant that the oversight wasn't needed since the person already adressed it and I fixed it.) |
Muckraker Posts: 267 Joined: 7 Mar 2008 | I don't like a lot of "today's" music. Most of the music I like is from the late 60's through to the 70's and 80's (mostly 70's) David Bowie, Queen, Yes, Genesis, stuff like that but please no Stones. The only fairly recent artist I like is NIN and Trent's been around for a while now and I occasionally like Manson. He can really put on a show. |
Gone Gonzo Posts: 2942 Joined: 22 Jun 2008 | There is no Blues in R&B today. They tell me there is rap that isn't about F***ing hoes and popping caps, I haven't heard any. These guys need to leave their gardening equipment alone. Bands like Linkin Park aren't punk. Ramones, Minor Threat, The Hives, are punk. People are getting elitist, expecting every new band that comes out to sound like the freaking Beatles. Not everyone who picks up a guitar is immediately going to sound like Kirk Freaking Hammett. |

Totally. Now a days the term is actually a coded marketing term which implies "black pop music". At least that's how the record industry uses it. |

Listen to Scouting For Girls. If the name doesn't point you out to how retarded a band they are, then listening to any pile of foetid shit they've done should. |
Anonymous Source Posts: 2 Joined: 25 Nov 2008 | Not to piss off anyone else, but I really hate when people reduce a genre to one band. I know alot of people who say they "hate" rap and hip-hop, and while agree that most POP rap and hip-hop is nothing more then a worthless musician and a skilled producer, there is plenty of really good rap. Jurassic 5 is an amazing band and uses some very interesting rhythms in their music. Not to mention A Tribe Called Quest who sample some great Jazz standards in their songs. The point I guess im trying to make is that while yea alot of modern and popular rap and pop artists are absolute failures (dont get me started on soulja boy) there are alot of really good other artists in the genre. |

Techno ; ) Wait! Save the puppy : ) Nah, I kind of know what you mean. But then unless you are heavily involved/interested in several scenes/genres, people (myself included in some cases) tend to just generalise it into clumps of several bands that represent them to the outside world. Take for example the country music scene. Most people can name johnny cash and perhaps willie nelson and thats about it. Or Industial. People tend to go, 'Oh you mean like Ministy, NIN, Static X right?'
I've just gotten used to it and calmly let them listen to whatever they like. The reason that certain bands are associated with the genre is that they tend to be entry points into them, and as such are the easiest things to use when trying to get into a scene. I remember it took me quite a while to get into things like growled and distorted lyrics but bands like slipknot, machinehead, motorhead and NIN acclimatised me till I could appreciate them. Though I guess I should of realised where I was heading after listening to Mustines voice and not recoiling ; D |

I think its because everything else is just way too different. I mean electronic and use the beats in some hip hop songs, but usually there are no awesome drum or guitar solos, let alone memorable vocals |
Gone Gonzo Posts: 1933 Joined: 31 Jan 2008 | Since I've started going to uni I've found I can listen to ANY song and like it.. Or at least something about it. Some songs I like because of the sheer ability of the musicians, others because they are fun and sometimes I like songs just because they are damn catchy. For example - I like a lot of pop, I spend a fair bit of time listening to MTV and stuff just because. I like The Veronicas cos they have sweet harmonies, I like Pink cos shes gutsy, I like Christina Aguilera cos she has a powerful voice. I really like hip hop for the way the use their words, obviously not so much mainstream hip hop but that stuff is awesome at parties! If you spend less time hating music it makes thing go smoother! |

I'm going to take this lovely opportunity to rip you on sampling. The #1 reason I hate Hip-Hop/Rap/Modern R&B is sampling. They're stealing another artist's music so they can make their crappy song slightly more interesting. Why don't they stop plagiarizing and write their own freaking music. I get it, Vanila Ice added an extra eighth note to the bassline which he shamelessly ripped off of Queen and David Bowie. Morons. Oh yeah. |

I believe its more than just sampling, but some covers just don't do the original any justice. I've heard one good cover lately, it was Shadowside doing Dio's Rainbow In The Dark. And i can respect that. But most of the time a band just hacks up a song and makes me hate the original. |

I agree with you on the UK charts, except I don't like Kings Of Leon either, what a terrible mix of mediocre "indie" rock, bland innofensive pop and soulless RnB. Also, you know clubs that play chiptune? Holy shit, do want! |

Gone Gonzo Posts: 1290 Joined: 4 May 2008 | I like rock of all genres, and some metal. Not a fan of over heavy metal, more the classic metal of slayer and metallica, and maiden of course. Also like electronica, classical, drum n' bass (ala Qemists and Pendulum) and some dance music (but it has to have something going for it. I recommend The Potbelleez) I dislike most rap music, other than that of Jay Z, Will Smith, some of the funny Eminem songs and those fellas who did It's Tricky and Walk This Way with Aerosmith, and It's like That with Jason Nevis. Those some badass shit y'all. Also, a couple of Akon's new songs of his new album are actually quite good :S |

Hate? Too strong a word, but I do dislike specifically American mainstream rappers from 2000 onwards. Its almost as if they gave up after realising their social commentary was falling on dumb idiots ears.
The fact that a song with the lyrics 'I get money' is allowed to exist is bad enough. When I watched the video for it, thinking it couldn't be as bad as I thought I was it wasn't even funny how bad it is!
