My dad is now letting me use his old Laptop and I was wondering about getting some games for it. I heard about steam and checked out the site. It was pretty cool but I'm still indecisive(I think that's how you spell it) about whether to use it. So should I?

Wait, what exactly is it you're afraid of?

You're wondering if Steam is made by bad people who wish to give you viruses and steal all your money, or something?

Steam is the best thing ever, i mean come on, it was made by Valve, that should be a red flag and say to you "hey this probably will be pretty good"

Yes, Steam is really cool, and I haven't had any adverse effects with it.

Why wouldn't you? What might it do that's bad?

It has yet to steal my money or give me a virus. Thanks, computer paranoia!
I buy ALL of my games from the store, including games that go on Steam.

honestly, I am a materialist, so if I can find a boxed copy of the game for the same price, I'll buy the boxed one. However, for games you would be hard-pressed to find in my locale [ex. Max Payne, POP: SoT, Vampire the Masquerade, ect] I'll use Steam in a heart-beat, especially over any online ordering websites.

The only reason I didn't use steam in the past was because I preferred to physically own my games. Now I don't care as much, and I bought like crazy on the sale.

STEAM is the best thing since ever.

I can't believe I lived without this thing for 15 years of my life.

Steam is nice but I still prefer a hard copy of my games, mods being the exception.

STEAM blew up my computer and raped my sister.
Seriously though, I have never used steam.

If the laptop is fast enough, Steam is great. I like to have the physical boxes for certain games (Fallout 3 and Left4Dead come to mind, first for the cool little instruction book, and the second for the cover :P), but if you can get past that then Steam is indeed awesome.

Damn the Steam Boxing Week Sale though, I spent more money than I should have haha, so be careful of those.

Steam's decent. It has fun games but it's buggy.

If you feel like PC gaming, Steam is as necessary as the PC itself.

Plus they usually offer great deals on newly released games, so you might save some money.

And you can transfer the games to other PCs no problem. It's real convenient.

Steam is the best thing since the internet.

Yes, if your computer can play games, get steam. Now.

***EDIT***

Also, if you can play good games, there's sales ALL the time. I just got Bioshock for $4.99!

I've heard rumours that it bogs your system down and they steal your data and it's probably true, but there's no way to get around it if you play Gmod or L4D.

I only use Steam to play Left 4 Dead online. I preffer to torrent or buy games, but im not gonna say anything bad about Steam since it hasn't done anything wrong to my computer. I dont like having it on my computer but as long as it doesn't cause me any trouble, it can stay.

Now, how do you exactly come to that conclusion?
Do you actually have some sort of evidence supporting your ill found statement or are you just making stuff up?

A program can't run if it's not open, but yes, STEAM does collect information about your PC to help decide what games to host and what will make them the most money. I'm pretty sure it only does it the first time you run it; they wouldn't constantly figure out information about your computer every day.

It's not harmful at all and doesn't harm your computer, it's something used to help benefit the user.

My best friend told me to get steam, and I've never had a problem with it. It's not like kazaa so it's perfectly safe, well nothing is really perfectly safe,

Once in a while, Steam will have surveys. In essence you put in your computer specs and Valve then has access to it. You can choose not to. It also doesn't bog your system down unless you have a 1.5ghz with 256mb of ram. Let's be realistic here, it never affects the performance of my games. And I run Steam on a P4 AGP system.

While we're all here, there's a question I'd like to ask. Can you install Steam without a internet connection. If someone could test it i would be very greatful

Dont use Steam. It's cheaper to buy the games from store or order them online through other shops. You also cant resell steam games.

Games have to be validated online before you are allowed to play.

This isn't for me. If i didn't have internet i couldn't be on The Escapist right now. My friend, doesnt need to validate anything. He just wants to know if Steam can be installed without internet.

No I highly doubt it. The Steam website offers a downloader that automatically downloads and installs the Steam app.
