It's the dawning of a new year.

We're recovering from new years hangovers (yes it took me 5 days), we're making new year's resuolutions, and we're starting to think about getting back into the nitty gritty of a whole new year of forum posting.

Let's get a census going, introduce yourself:

Why are you on the Escapist? Games? Articles? Off-Topic discussion?

Came to post my opinions, stayed to address other people's opinions.

What other forums have you been on? How do you rate the Escapist?

I've been on gamespot and IGN; I prefer the escapist for it's simple design and relatively agreeable community

Is there any story behind your avatar/name?

Banjo & Kazooie was the first console game I ever played, and remains my favorite in that genre (albiet tied with Conker Live & Reloaded)

If you feel comfortable with it; where do you live in the world? (roughly)

I'm currently in Australia, but I lived in Beijing for four years until almost a month ago. Before Beijing I lived in different parts of Europe for almost all of my life. Soon I'll move to Singapore or Tokyo.

I am here because of excellent reviews and other peoples opinions on how amzingly awesome I am, although, there have been a lack of the latter.

edit: hit post accidentally, i shall continue on:

What other forums have you been on? How do you rate the Escapist?

none, I initially came here because of zero punctuation which a friend recommended, and I stayed after I saw the content of the website, so in terms of stacking up, quite good compared to nothing

Is there any story behind your avatar/name?

I believe it was close to the time where the hype of SSBB was closing in on ridiculous when I joined(and I am sad to say I was swept away in this) so I put a character in that I think would mop up in the game. I am not religious in any way, and apologize if anyone religious thinks my name is a heathenistic stab into their belief system. My pic is just of Steve Zissou, put it in there because I really enjoy that movie, so nothing special.

I came because of Yahtzee and I stayed because I love this community, it feels more like a bunch of friends kindof, a support system and somewhere to just talk and share your opinions.

I haven't really spent a large amount of time on any other forum. Why would I want to go anywhere else?

It's my name.. I wasn't feeling particularly imaginative the day I joined.

I live in New South Wales in Australia. I've never lived anywhere else, but one day I'd love to live in England.

Just discussion, nice to talk to some sane people.

GameFAQS, its better than some other sites, but really not that good (GF, I mean). I'd rate the Escapist high, it truly is one of the last bastions of sanity on the internet.

Avatar:I love Mass Effect, and Nihlus is cool (I'm thinking of changing it to the N7 from Shepard's uniform, good idea, bad, what do you think?).
Name:Orannis is the villain in the Abhorsen book trilogy. 62 is at the end of my Gamertag.

No other forums, though I have seen a few and was terrified. How do they spell like that continuously? It must hurt them...

Many - Mostly photoshop ones a few years back but a few good ones. I was a mod on the official Aussie PS2 magazine forum.

Is there any story behind your avatar name?
I've had it for around 6 years.. I don't really remember why. Avatar is from a webcomic, it used to be another (male) character but some guy said that guys shouldn't have girls in their avatar and vice versa so I decided to change it to this one. Funnily enough the character is a cynical bitch =)

I got here January of '08 to make a comment or join an event or something...I really can't remember, I think it involved me wanting to win something, though. I forgot about this great site until I discovered Zero Punctuation in October of '08, when my posting began.

OGPlanet, X-Cel, a bunch of unknown forum communities. I love forums so much. If anybody can recommend good ones, I'd thank them.

Is there any story behind your avatar/name?
Say Anything is the name of my favorite band, I idolize the main band member, Max Bemis, because of all the crap that he's been through and his inspirational music.

My avatar is from Dark Cloud 2, I found the render online and had to make a signature of it, then I made an avatar out of that signature. Dark Cloud 2 was a very fun game to me, though it's not in my top 10.

I'm pretty sure I've given you props for your user name/avatar in the past but i'll do it again this time. I think my favorite discworld novel is Small Gods, but my favorite character is definatly Death or Rincewind. Two certainties in life: Death & The fact that rincewind will run away if given a choice.

Wompa rings a bell, i think it was like a swamp or tatooine beast from starwars

There seems to be a much more secure stigma of respect, grammatical correctness, and humour than on nearly every other forum. It's simply fun and I appreciate the intellectual contention and stimulation that is sparse in most other places. It's tightly moderated so that the undesirables are filtered out and as the members who carry a lot of weight, I end up getting a good impression of them.

What other forums have you been on? How do you rate the Escapist?

I've also been on the Bioware forums; they're quite excellent, as well. I hope to join the Mirror's Edge official forums once their site is working again. I've posted once or twice on IGN. Overall, besides the occasional...troll? Is that what you kids call them these days?

Is there any story behind your avatar/name?

Well, Mass Effect is my favorite game ever, much like good ol' Orannis up there. Garrus was by far my favourite character; he was bad-ass and renegade, yet his demeanour was one of Turian-like respect and discipline. As for my name, they're cool words, and the alliteration angle kicks ass in my opinion (plus, it's capitalized, so it sticks out).

If you feel comfortable with it; where do you live in the world? (roughly)

The USA. If you ignore the majority of people, ignore the sensationalized politics and ignore all the copies of Twilight and The Secret and Eragon clogging up the bookstores, you'll find it a ecent enough place to live.

Why are you on the Escapist? Games? Articles? Off-Topic discussion?

When I first joined, I was convinced I would stay only in the User Reviews section. Since then, I've branched out and made the Off-Topic section my home as well. I also frequent the Forum Games and RP section, but I don't post as often as I lurk while I'm there.

I stuck around for the review community, which I've become quite attached to, and the articles and news posts. The Escapist has become my home away from home.

What other forums have you been on? How do you rate the Escapist?

I've been to several other forums across many years, but never quite found any of them to my liking. The Escapist has a community closer to my interests, and a lot of individuals I'm happy to spent my time with.

Is there any story behind your avatar/name?

Not really. I've been using this username for some period of time now, stemming from an oxymoron that I liked. As far as the avatar, there's no real trick to it. I've changed my avatar pretty regularly, but they all have a robot theme. This is probably the most human avatar I've had to date. But I'm happy with it, so I may end up keeping it.
Maybe.

If you feel comfortable with it; where do you live in the world?

I've been on GamerArena in Aus and the PurePwnage forums when I was in High School. They were fun, but were empty of any thought-provoking content. Escapist is both engaging and entertaining.

User Reviews and the odd article. I'd like to be a professional film critic one day, but I also review the occasional game.

Unforgotten Realms is also pretty sweet.

What other forums have you been on? How do you rate the Escapist?

Ultimate Guitar for the bands and artists community. I've been there for seven years... I'm not too happy about it either.

The Escapist is pretty sweet. Definitely my favourite forum, largely because of the neat design. I flicker between User Reviews and Off-Topic almost daily, and occasionally pop into Game discussion.

I don't even remember why I made my account, but I remember seeing an interesting topic in the recent posts when I came to check for a new Zero Punctuation, and making an account to reply to it, and then slowly spiraling into madness and addiction as I spent more time here. You'll find me bouncing around Gaming Discussion and Off-Topic, occasionally in a couple of Forum Games, and I recently broke into User Reviews with my review of The Curious Case of Benjamin Button.

What other forums have you been on? How do you rate the Escapist?
The only other forums I've ever been on have been private forums made by and for me and some of my friends, so I don't really have anything to compare it to, but I do like the Escapist.

It's Safe Here.

Is there any story behind your avatar/name?
Well, my username is the same as I use in a couple of places, and it's the name of a fictional character I created when I was a little kid and fell in love with. The avatar is just my usual facial expression when I'm in public, plus my fabulous beard added on for individuality.

Isaac Dodgson: Isaac was one of the names my folks almost went with (Along with James, Patrick which became my middle name, and Peter) before my mother on the table decided she hated all those names, and opted for Sean a good week and a half after I was born...Dodgson is from Charles Dodgson, and my slight obsession with anything wonderland/looking glass related.

I came here at first for Zero-Punctuation. Then, something in the "What's New" box caught my eye before I even knew this place had forums, so I decided to check it out. That thing in the box(Bow-chicka-bow-bow) was the Zombie Apocalypse RP run by Mister John Galt. I watched it with great interest, waited for it to end, and when it did, I registered and got in on the next RP that was being run. That one addicted me to the Escapist and I began to branch out into other forum sections.

What other forums have you been on? How do you rate the Escapist?
I used to post every now and then on the Roosterteeth forums, good fun for a while. The Escapist has the best community on the internet, I love the people here.

My name is an inside joke and is not as perverted as it sounds. I was playing Halo 2 with a friend(LAN) and my Spartan was yellow. He just started muttering Where are you Spartan Banana under his breath, and the name was born. The typo was originally an accident, but eventually became a trademark. As for the avatar, I just though it was funny.

I first came here because of Zero Punctuation, but a thread caught my attention, compelling me to sign up an account. Since then, I've regularly come to The Escapist, using it for gaming news, interesting articles and a general source of entertainment. I've even made it my homepage (as I'm sure some other among you lot have as well).

I usually end up spending most of my time in Off-Topic, but from time to time, I'll visit Gaming and User Reviews. I tend to avoid the RP section... I'm just not interested in role-playing on the Internet, I suppose.

What other forums have you been on? How do you rate the Escapist?

I've been to several other gaming forums, like the Bungie.net one, and the Mass Effect one. They were great, and I did enjoy myself, but I tended to ghost the forums quite a bit and not post much, and, well, they didn't hold my attention for too long, unlike The Escapist.

Of course, I've been to the Gamespot and Gametrailers forums, but I've never actually signed up...

Is there any story behind your avatar/name?

'Stompy' is a random name used on Halo PC online, when more than one player has the username 'New 001' (for the lazy people who can't be bothered to change their usernames, like me). I dunno why, but I really enjoyed that game, and ended up in this excellent duel with another player. Ever since then, I tended to use the name Stompy.

As for the display picture, that changes from interest to interest. Right now, it's an Elite Combine solider.

My avatar was a default one The Escapist provided because I was lazy, and I hate playing that game of "How many kilobytes is this?". I've never changed it as it's just so darned recognizable.

IGN, Weebl's Stuff and CAD. That's about it really. I'd not rate The Escapist as such, but I do like it a lot here, as it's a lot more tight-knit and alive than some other forums around.

Is there any story behind your avatar/name?
I found my avatar somewhere in the stock avatars here at The Escapist. There were five or six others like it in different colours and designs, but they seem to have disappeared, making this one sort of unique. I don't even remember what it's from.

Came originally for Zero Punctuation, but joined the forums after a Linux distro discussion broke out. Didn't do much on the forums until I noticed the User Reviews forum, where I proceeded to post a few of my reviews. At this point, Gigantor took notice of my work, giving me a lot of advice which helped decidedly in my writing style, and other people's reviews helped me get a hold on efficient, entertaining writing.

At this point in time, I'm here largely for User Reviews, where I write reviews on computer games (in my Comprehensive and Retrospective Review series), movies (in my Cinematic Reviews series) and technology (in my Technological Review series). I've had an article and a review published by The Escapist, as well as a considerable number of Letters to the Editor. The Featured Content and News Room forums are other occasional haunts of mine, and I'm almost always up for a technological argument, particularly on computer hardware, mobile phones and operating systems.

What other forums have you been on? How do you rate the Escapist?

Too many to count. Prominent ones that I've spent time on include the Steam Forums and the Newspeak Dictionary Forums. All in all, the Escapist combines a great community with intelligent discussion. I wish it had a User Creations forum, but that's a nitpick.

Is there any story behind your avatar/name?

The name was merely created as a placeholder back when I was playing Diablo II, because the simple "RAK" was not available, but the avatar is quite interesting. It is a fragment of a highly modified picture of myself, which depicts the stylistic design of the RAK Mobile Autonomous Intelligence.

I was born and have lived all of my life in Dublin, in Ireland.

Why are you on the Escapist? Games? Articles? Off-Topic discussion?

Started off watching Zero Punctuation then during a slow month at work decided to check out the forums. Generally prefer the off-topic board. I normally read 2-3 of the articles each week with varying interest.

What other forums have you been on? How do you rate the Escapist?

Imdb's which is full of idiots. I really like the Escpaist's it seems a well moderated and generally pretty sharp bunch.

Is there any story behind your avatar/name?

Came for Yahtzee, stayed because the people seem fairly decent. I also plan to get some RP'ing done at some point.

Most of the other forums I've been on were RP sites that died in a matter of weeks, and things like Gaia, 4chan, ect. So far the Escapist seems to have a better crowd, and I'm a junkie for badge systems.

I'm obsessed with a British author- Terry Pratchett. One of his books is called "Thief of Time". I needed a new user name that had no resemblance to a furry (previously Rina_theFeralWereKitty on most sites), so I changed "time" to "thyme", then switvhed it ino French.
The avi is some weird gargoyle thing I have. Details in my profile, or ask me. *feeling lazy*

Central California, USA.
