You've done nothing but try to be a contrarion in your post. I think the OP wanted to know why people love America, I don't see what talking about Japan has to do with that. Too much derailing on this one, but I guess with the subject matter it was bound to happen. EDIT: Just reading the few posts above me, I think this one should be closed down. Anybody else? |

A lot of people where you are are either judgmental or ignorant. You only hear about the racist and hypocritical ones because they're the loudest. America's actually a pretty good place to live. I like that we have religious freedom of worship here. There are still quite a few countries where that's a luxury. |

Nah dont close it its not a bad topic it just has a few people like me in it (i'm leaving now so its safe) who like to point worthless things out a lot. |

1) Japan used to be the best place to be a gamer for a few years, but not anymore. America gets far more video game releases than Japan does and has a much stronger indie development. The only reason I think of that Japan might be considered better is because of it's still strong arcade scene. However, what America lacks in arcades, it makes up with stronger online gaming. 2) Irrelevant argument. You are a complete idiot if you judge a sport by it's name. Also, I find soccer to be an inferior sport to football as it's extremely boring and doesn't have the strategic depth that football has. To put it simply, my preference of football over soccer is about the same as my preference of chess over checkers. 3) In some ways, Japan does get newer technology ahead of America, there is no doubt. However, in terms of technological and scientific progress, America is still the best country in the world for those. 4) Nope, Japan does not have the best college system in the world. If you look at the best colleges in the world, the majority of them are located in the United States. Japan's best college, the University of Tokyo, is only ranked #19th right now in 2008 (and just for reference, America has thirteen colleges ahead of the University of Tokyo on rankings). The second best college system also belongs to Britain, not Japan. 5) I guess you could make that argument, but I could say that the fact that we are louder about our freedoms is evidence that we place more value in them. And yeah...try again, Mr. Weeaboo. |

3) I can't seem to find information regarding what countries are the biggest in terms of hardware and software development. However, I know America has the operating system market, CPU hardware, GPU hardware, and many other computer related fields pretty much cornered. Not to mention, most of the biggest websites in the world are American based. There is a reason why Silicon Valley is located in America. 4) Yes, I think you might have been confusing high schooling with college education. In terms of primary and secondary schooling, America isn't all that great when compared to other first-world countries. However, America is definitely the best in terms of college education. 5) I know. I'm not saying it isn't a problem sometimes either. But I do know that Americans have a great deal of passion for their freedoms. |

It's all about that American dream. The country prides itself as a land of opportunity, but also one of self-responsibility, you have the opportunity, but it's not just going to be handed to you. We're also the guys out there defending the four freedoms...or as we'd like to think.
1. Barely. Half of the country voted for him twice. Just in the critical places is all. But as a famous British dude put it, Americans eventually do the right thing...or at least a smarter alternative. 2. It works, doesn't it? 3. The tree of liberty must be watered from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants. You didn't really think the U.S. could've gained our independence with a petition, do you? 4. I think part of our dealie is that we don't have any nobles or castes or anything, everybody's born essentially equal(we go into slavery but we weren't the only country doing it, to be fair, and we did have a dude who went on a rampage to end slavery. Before the Emancipation Proclamation), and as such, we don't have castles, which would imply that its residents/owners would be superior to us in some way. We do have some pretty pimp houses and sweet fortresses though. |

Japan being being the best place to be a gamer would be your opinion, not a fact. And I have no interest in football, but if you were to correct him, you could at least tell him to say "American Football" as a Spanish translation. And for the record, soccer is a hell of a lot more loved in Brazil than Mexico. |

I honestly don't see why people would hate Canada. I mean, look at it. It is one of the most unlikely places to start a war. Just like Australia. I actually think it would be pretty epic is Canada and Australia went to war. I mean, no one would expect it. But now I've lost my train of thought in my foolish desires. |

I think most of the time people make fun of Canada is just in jest and not in seriousness. I mean, they wear funny hats and say "eh" all the time. It's like they are begging to be made fun of. :P |

Paperboy Posts: 42 Joined: 18 Dec 2008 | I think America is awesome because we kept the free world free from Communist oppression for 60 years I think America is awesome because we (The selfish pricks that we are) give out more money than any foreign government I think America is awesome because there is a reason why the rest of the world comes HERE to study I think America is awesome because we are worried that we are no longer doing HALF of the worlds science I think America is awesome because we own up to what we do I think America is awesome because we are an incredibly diverse people, both ideologically and racially. Nowhere else in the world can you experience the vast array of cultures that are present in the US I think America is awesome because our people can slander our president and not get sent to jail for it I think America is awesome because we provide defense systems to countries that would have to go without if we weren't here (patriot missiles in poland.... etc) I think America is awesome because all of those nutjobs who promised their neighbours that they would move to Canada if Bush won, are still here. I think America is awesome because we do not have a socialized health care system, so innovation is allowed to continue, unlike countries like Canada where there are enormous waiting lists for basic services (One Canadian cancer patient, this was in Discover magazine, was on a 6 month waiting list for an MRI. His doctor told him that he would be dead in 5 months. So, what did he do? He hopped on a plane to the US, and had his MRI in 3 days. Thats progress.) America is the most hated country in the world, because we aren't afraid of stepping on a few toes to achieve what is usually best for everyone. Have we made mistakes? Hell yes! We fuck up all the time. The difference is that even though the rest of the "Civilized World" treats us as unclean gun toting hicks, we honestly don't give a shit, and go ahead fighting the good fight. What the hell have the Europeans enlightened Europeans done in Darfur: answer, they haven't lifted a damn finger! I absolutely love all of the people posting in this thread who say that they hate America. Well, if you hate it so much, leave, because the grass is always greener on the other side of the hill! |

On the Record Posts: 5157 Joined: 21 Aug 2008 | Actually, I do have a question. Why are people proud to be American? what are the reasons to make you proud to be born in the country that you are in? P.S. football being called soccer is blasphemy, and I am sure it has been said here somewhere but American football just being called football is even worse, I mean one play out of four? seriously? P.P.S I love American football and am a Right Tackle, and I think America is decent but few spoil it for many. FINAL THOUGHT: Great Britain FTW. |

Because then we are connected by birth to the most powerful and benevolent country that has ever graced the face of the earth. |
Pulitzer Laureate Posts: 927 Joined: 7 Jan 2008 | The U.S. isn't anything spectacular; there are good things and bad things about it, just like any other country. As for the whole "Americans think they're the best" thing, it's called nationalism, and every country has it. I don't understand why everyone thinks this is a uniquely American habit. |
Beat Writer Posts: 194 Joined: 23 Oct 2008 | Please forgive my overly rambunctious american brothers, for we are a nation composed of all the people the rest of the world didn't like to begin with (puritans/irish/etc.). We started out as the underdog, and are still very young, trying to truly discover what it is to be american since we do not have a long history to draw from. It's because of this that we have a chip on our shoulder, but also that we are ready to assist the downtrodden and needy. Take a peek at charitable donations per capita and you will see that most americans are much more giving than our foreign friends, but that is not to say that we are better than them, it's just to say that there are a lot of good folks here, and they deserve better than to be labeled as idiots, braggarts, or zealots. Our culture shapes the cultures of the world, so enjoy it. Our innovation drives us into the future. We like war a bit much, but that is what forged us into what we are. Have some bourban and enjoy the view, were gonna be here a while... |

That I can mention this without being stoned to death in the streets is the sole reason why America is awesome. Nationalism movements were largely responsible for the World Wars. Being able to criticize ourselves without being hunted down by people entranced by sentiments of Patriotism is our sole chance at not repeating the mistakes of the past. |
