If you can't communicate without using vulgarities, nobody will take you seriously. If you're having beers with your friends, well, in that situation anything goes, but I'd like the rest of the world to know me as a well mannered, mature 25 year old. |

I communicate with vulgarities and get taken fucking seriously. I don't find them offensive, just that they put an extreme amount of emphasis on. |

That's well and good for you mate, but I have 2 kids under the age of 2, so I really don't want to walk around spouting off at the mouth. There are just as many if not more scenarios where it is completely inappropriate. What are you gonna do, walk into a job interview and say "Hey, how ya fuckin' doin boss?" My point is, one of the things that comes with being an adult is showing restraint. Swearing a lot is just one of those things most of us let go of in order to become better pillars of our communities. |

What he said. |
Infamous Scribbler Posts: 608 Joined: 3 Jun 2008 | I try my best to not swear. But if you go to my school, where you are surrounded by people who constantly swear you just get used to swearing in normal conversations. Usually I only swear when I am annoyed, and even then I try to say "Frack" instead of fuck.
I'm completely Irish, I still try to avoid swearing. |

No, I'm going to get to know the boss, then spout vulgarities. Oh, and in the case of kids they should be at least 13 before you start swearing, so you're right there. And as for the pillar of community... bahahahahahhaha. |

A more feminine avatar could help just a little. And slightly more on-topic, I don't mind a little(read: tiny bit) of swearing, but I extremely dislike those who use swear words in every other sentence. |

So male forumites can have any avatar they want, but females have to have feminine avatars? |
Infamous Scribbler Posts: 582 Joined: 17 Apr 2008 | First of all, swearing is great, for example: 'Come the fuck in or fuck the fuck off.' 'This is a bucket of shit. If someone throws shit at us, we throw shit back at them. We start a shit fight. We throw so much shit back at them so they can't pick up shit, they can't throw shit, they can't DO shit.' Two very sweary quotes from a very sweary but somehow highbrow and desperately funny program called the thick of it. However, swearing has its place; perhaps not at work or in front of kids. This is because its impact would be lost through over-use, only because we considered it offensive and vulgar can its use be considered subversive or entertaining. If we all swore all the time, it wouldn't be swearing and we would have to find new words to consider offensive. This happens all the time, consider 'Gay' and it journey from happy to homosexual to something thats just a bit rubbish but not enough to be bothered about. |

I'm always afraid to make this mistake x) On topic: I swear when angry or to emphesize something. Otherwise I try to moderate my swearing. |

Nobody wants a flame war, that's why the escapist forums are brilliant. I was simply questioning the guy/gal's logic. |

It's not a big deal or anything, I just find it strange. Maybe the way I write is masculine? I thought my name was fairly girly.. Mostly because it's my actual name and I'm a girl. It's pronounced Carly if anyone's curious. |

Pardon my ignorant comment. I was told that in Dublin, "fuck" is practically a punctuation mark. |

With the huge amount of weird names floating round on the internet, few people actually regard them. I know I don't. It's all just avatars and badges for me. |
Paperboy Posts: 44 Joined: 6 Jan 2009 | Not to be elitist or anything but I judge people by what they say. So I notice the type of people who use swearing for a cheap laugh or to punctuate a statement. |
Pulitzer Laureate Posts: 711 Joined: 12 Dec 2007 | Apparently Stephen Fry enjoys swearing, so if somebody as sophisticated as him can enjoy swearing, then the rest of us can. |

Beat Writer Posts: 177 Joined: 10 Oct 2007 | Hmm, swearing eh? Back in my days of schoolin' there was this wee fellow about 2 years younger than myself who happened to insert the words "fuck" or "fuckin'" inbetween every other word, he sounded like a right tit and was clearly only doing it because he, and his friends thought it was cool. I've got no time for people who just insert swear words for the sake of it, they're either young, unimportant/unemployed, in a position of no authority/respect or a god damn rock n' roll star. So, this begs the question, which one are you J-Man? Edit
It's got very little to do with it offending people, we'll just think you're not that bright, and have very little respect for those you speak to, ie... most folk won't want to talk to you if you talk like that. |

Is it just me, or is swearing awesome? And I don't get those people who snootily say "How vulgar!" Words are just sounds and shapes that we use to communicate, how the fuck can they offend you?
