chronobreak: No, swearing is not awesome, it make you sound like an idiot most of the time. If you can't communicate without using vulgarities, nobody will take you seriously. If you're having beers with your friends, well, in that situation anything goes, but I'd like the rest of the world to know me as a well mannered, mature 25 year old.
Yeah, pretty much. If you can't articulate yourself without swearing, you're an idiot. If you don't WANT to articulate yourself without swearing, then you're either an idiot, immature, insecure, or a combination of all three.

Oh please. Outside of being angry, or hurting yourself (Or being hurt in general), what is the point of swearing?
You're either swearing because you don't know any other words in which to better exress yourself (Idiot/ignorant).
You're swearing because you think that swearing is fun/funny if you do it a lot (Immature).
Or you're swearing so that you can shock people and/or they'll notice you (Insecure).
J-Man: Is it just me, or is swearing awesome? And I don't get those people who snootily say "How vulgar!" Words are just sounds and shapes that we use to communicate, how the fuck can they offend you?
FUCKIN' A RIGHT, BITCH!! lol
i love cursing.
what gets my goat is when people say "don't use bad language". i don't believe in bad language.
they're just words, and words don't hurt.
I'm going to paraphrase Lewis Black here by saying "we are adults, these are the words we use to express frustration, rage, and anger. What is the good language we are supposed to use. Say someone who has worked a job for 40 years and is suddenly fired or let go and they lose their pension, their insurance, EVERYTHING! what are they supposed to say? 'Oh, darn it.... Sassafras, sassafras, sassafras !!!'"
plus, I'm from Brooklyn, where "Fuck" isn't even a word, it's a comma lol
As much as I understand how swearing can be offensive, amongst a similar age group of mine I definitely don't hold back on swearing for emphasis. I don't swear when I'm around respectable people who might find it offensive (even if in a non-offensive context).
If you can't articulate yourself without swearing, you're an idiot. If you don't WANT to articulate yourself without swearing, then you're either an idiot, immature, insecure, or a combination of all three.

Oh Please. Calling someone an idiot because they can't express themselves is incredibly snobby and elitist.
People have different senses of humour, hardly immature. Besides, who the fuck are you to say what's mature or immature?
And what about swearing with friends? You're just saying words. Swearing doesn't bring attention, the central message of what you say does.
Cahlee: I usually only swear when I'm really annoyed. I try not to swear if I can avoid it.
Yeah I know someone, who when it comes to football basically swears for the sake of swearing. We were in a group talking about recent results, when he starts saying "yeah they were fucking awful" and stuff like that, when we were talking about Real Madrid, and (let me make it clear, I don't support them) I felt I had to point out that, they are still a very good team. Then he goes on swearing about scores that were kinda dull, i.e. 1-0, and 0-0. It gets really annoying after a while.
DuncanRR: Fuck yeah! I've got Irish blood in me. Of course I love to swear.
I'm completely Irish, I still try to avoid swearing.
Pardon my ignorant comment. I was told that in Dublin, "fuck" is practically a punctuation mark.
Oh it is. Dublin is a really sweary place. Actually, most of Ireland is at this stage. I was just trying to point out that not all of Ireland swears....just the majority.

Straight up, dawg. I hear ya. *cough*
I mean, I concur entirely with that statement, sir. Swearing is fine in certain situations, but not in others. That's it, that's the bottom line. Just because you don't think it's a big deal, doesn't mean other folks aren't offended by it. That's the way of the world. If you don't want to take that seriously then you yourself won't be taken seriously.
And as we all know, words are VERY powerful. They're more than just sounds.
I'd say I swear moderately more than the average middle class Brit. But I like, I think you add so much varied emphasis with them. I love that 'Holy fucking shit' can be a bad thing or a good thing.
Perhaps I could point you all towards Wittgenstein's philosophy? That words ARE just sounds, which we use to communicate. It's the individuals choice as to whether they let it offend them.

and you've just proved yourself as a whiny bitch who is afraid to say the word FUCK because you think it will somehow taint your quality as a human being. Maybe you've lived such a sheltered babied life for so long that you think that words hurt. Words don't hurt. They're just words.
You're just too sensitive. you will eventually have to grow up one day and realize that in the real world, people don't care about Baby Tea's feelings. You're supposed to act like an adult... but the word "shit" makes you cry.
if you honestly get offended when people use "bad language", then you stop being so sensitive and you need to realize that this is how people talk. deal with it.
as far as liking to swear, what difference does it make, because curse words do nothing but further enhance the point you're trying to get across in your speech.
i found this video a while back of Jim Breuer on his radio show talking about the uses of the word "Fuck" and it is actually kind of funny. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hf-YRlVVdng
so fuck the fucking pansy pussy douche-fags who don't like fuckin' swearing because those bastards and bitches don't grasp the fuckin' concept of freedom of speech, those cock-sucking shitheads!!!! lol
Like sex I do not consider language to be "taboo" anymore.
However, I do not think it is clever, and I think those people that say its cool to swear, need some form of education. Its a little hypocritical I know, however, if you're brain cannot think of something more "effective" to use rather than a swear word, I think you need to take a good look at yourself.
I'm a teacher to those of you who think swearing is cool, imagine having someone teach your children, swearing every other word, not a nice thought really.....

Any other pointless and elitist arguments?
You keep using that word. I don't think it means what you think it means.
Excessive swearing just comes across as low brow. It's almost as if people can't find anything powerful or meaningful to say so they use expletives to add shock value.
You're either swearing because you don't know any other words in which to better exress yourself (Idiot/ignorant).
Got any other reasons?
Swearwords are very susscint and yet descriptive ways of expressing yourself. Why not use them instead of fluffing about with long flowery sentences of distaste?
Calling someone an idiot because they can't express themselves is incredibly snobby and elitist.
I wonder how many times you've seen someone do something stupid and called them an idiot? Look at the Darwin Awards! Maybe they didn't know any better! But still, they should know better, and therefore they are an idiot.
Same goes with speaking. The older you get, the less of an excuse you have.
People have different senses of humour, hardly immature. Besides, who the fuck are you to say what's mature or immature?
You're right in that people have different senses of humour. But that doesn't mean that just because it's a different sense of humour, that it isn't immature.
And swearing all the time, or consistently, doesn't really ooze any brand of maturity I've ever heard of. Maybe it's a special, new, remedial brand of maturity.
And what about swearing with friends? You're just saying words. Swearing doesn't bring attention, the central message of what you say does.
Wrong. Swearing does bring attention. If you're dropping swear words every other word, chances are that people won't really hear the 'central message'. They'll be too busy thinking 'Why does this idiot have to swear so much?'.
My arguments probably are pointless, seeing as you're happy to wallow in the dregs of the English language (Or any language, for that matter).
I more then likely have not convinced you that you sound like a punk from some remedial middle-school, but, to be fair, you haven't offered anything convincing in the way of "this is why swearing is cool/fun/ok!".
I do love the word fuck. I honestly think it's the most versatile word in the English language.
Noun (i.e. What the fuck?) Adjective (i.e. Fucking censorship Nazis!) Verb (i.e. They were fucking) Interjection (i.e. Fuck!) Adverb (i.e. The quick brown fox fuckly jumped over the log)
Okay so I made that last one up, but honestly, think of all the uses. It can be applied to almost any sentence. It can be an insult, it can emphasize things, it can alert your friends to danger. Frankly, fuck is a fucking amazing word.
Oh, and as far as offending people is concerned...get over it. Thousands of people around the world are dying everyday from wars, oppression, hunger, politics, crime and religion. Certainly you have something more pressing to get concerned about.
Excessive swearing just comes across as low brow. It's almost as if people can't find anything powerful or meaningful to say so they use expletives to add shock value.
As corporate_gamer just mentioned, what makes swear words more invalid adjectives than other words?
Mr0llivand3r: they're just words, and words don't hurt.
You sir, are incredibly naive. That is a ridiculous thing to say. Words hurt all the time.
no, they don't, you pussy. it's just a collection of organized sounds interpreted by the brain of the individual who hears it.
words DON'T hurt. and if you think they hurt, how about you call a hardened muscle-head U.S. Marine a "douchebag fucking pansy faggot shithead cockless bastard".
then after he knocks your fucking lights out, then you can evaluate who was hurt more.
and you've just proved yourself as a whiny bitch who is afraid to say the word FUCK because you think it will somehow taint your quality as a human being. Maybe you've lived such a sheltered babied life for so long that you think that words hurt. Words don't hurt. They're just words.

First of all, I never said I was offended by people swearing. I'm not. I merely said you sound like a complete moron when you do it to excess. Your post above really does nothing more then totally proves that point. Especially the last paragraph.
Mr0llivand3r: they're just words, and words don't hurt.
You sir, are incredibly naive. That is a ridiculous thing to say. Words hurt all the time.
It is your choice whether they could hurt or not.
Except the N word. Anyone saying such a word (including black people) should be punched in the face by the nearest person.
What a delightful double standard!
You won't use the 'N' word because it's offensive (And it makes you sound like an uneducated waste of time). BUT, using your own logic, black people are choosing to be offended, right? So it should be a free-for-all!
Mr0llivand3r: they're just words, and words don't hurt.

Uhh...you just proved the other guys point. If words were merely 'words', as you suggest, then the Marine in question would simple laugh it off, or walk away! But he would be offended! Upset enough, even, to beat someone to a pulp. So either you need a better example, or words aren't just words.
J-Man: Is it just me, or is swearing awesome? And I don't get those people who snootily say "How vulgar!" Words are just sounds and shapes that we use to communicate, how the fuck can they offend you?
That's a very close minded point of view you put forth there. You're basically saying that because of your upbringing, you can't understand why anyone would find swearing offensive. You fail to acknowledge that people are brought up differently, so to others what you deem unoffensive is offensive. And no it isn't up to them to not be offended by what you are saying, it is up to you to acknowledge that some people won't like what you're saying and to watch what you say.
On another note I personally don't mind swearing, but I never swear unless I'm angry or I really want to get a point across. I find that if you swear too much and you're annoyed with someone and want to let them know about it, when you swear it has nowhere near the same effect as it would coming from someone who never/rarely swears.
Something else I just thought of aswell is that, overall, the ladies don't tend to like swearing. It's not an attractive quality.
Calling someone an idiot because they can't express themselves is incredibly snobby and elitist.

I suppose we'll have to agree to disagree.
At least we're both smart enough individuals to not drop to low levels and flame each other.
So, onto the debate.
Yes, calling someone an idiot when they do something stupid is valid, but not because they can't express themselves, that's just a lack of vocabulary.
No, swearing doesn't ooze maturity. Neither does elitism.
If people swear a lot, it becomes just another thing they say, and so you can in fact understand the central message. If I'm having a conversation with someone and they swear a lot, I don't stand there with my mouth gaping open and vacant gaze on my eyes think "sheesh he swears a lot"
Once again, I didn't know the English language had dregs. It's not a beer, it's a language. All words are valid. Yours are, mine are, even David fucking Cameron's are. It's your choice as to how to interpret or perceive them.
and you've just proved yourself as a whiny bitch who is afraid to say the word FUCK because you think it will somehow taint your quality as a human being. Maybe you've lived such a sheltered babied life for so long that you think that words hurt. Words don't hurt. They're just words.

uhh... actually no i didn't. the marine dude would probably be offended, but he would no doubt brush it off as nothing after a little while. verbal insults are easy to discourage because they have no lasting effect (that is, of course, if the person being insulted is strong enough to realize that it was just words) but when he gives you a black eye and a broken jaw, you're the one who ended up hurt.
have you ever heard the phrase "sticks and stones can break my bones but your words will never hurt me" ?

No, I'm simply I perceive, and CHOOSE to perceive the N word, as well as others, as offensive. However, it is my CHOICE to perceive these words as such. They are but the summary of years of racism (and not just through words; lynchings, lack of human rights, and don't get me started on anti-semetism). Words like "fuck" are just adjectives, for fuck's sake.

I know you didn't mention your upbringing, but it's because of your upbringing that you maintain your point of view that swearing can't be offensive seeing as they're just words. Other people's upbringings will be different, and a lot of people would have been taught that swearing is offensive. I don't think you got the point of what I was saying.
As for the insecure part, I'd agree that some people who find swearing offensive might be insecure. But I'd also say that people who constantly swear are often percieved to be insecure aswell, if not more so.
Yeah, pretty much.
If you can't articulate yourself without swearing, you're an idiot.
If you don't WANT to articulate yourself without swearing, then you're either an idiot, immature, insecure, or a combination of all three.
