I was watching Emipre (again) and I got to thinking, why is Boba Fett the most popular Bounty Hunter?
Don't get me wrong, I think he's great but I can't quite figure out why. The only thing I could think of is because he caught trapped Han but is that really enough to make him the "coolest badass ever". All the material about why he's so great (numerous kills on jedi etc.) were written after he became the most well known. It can't be because he looks unique because every bounty hunter Vader calls to hunt Solo is unique. He doesn't even give insight to his character (could that be it?), I guess what I'm trying to get at is why not Bossk or IG-88 or any of the others?

(I would add a poll but this is more opinion and I really can't think of anything for the options)

Because the script-writers didn't really think about it too much?

Well, i'd say that it is infact his unique apperance that distinguishes him. The reason that differs from the other is he plays a more predominante role in capturing Han Solo and fighting Luke

He's in Star Wars, that's why!

The Man With No Name would like to challenge the assertion in the title.

Also it's entirely because of "nerd wank" over the line "No Desintigrations" and it's supposed badassery... that and his Armor is pretty cool.

Um...those other ones he mentioned were also in Star Wars...

Looks kill, kills stuff, what's not to like?

his armor... its just so friggin cool!

SEXEH!

Becuase he has a song about his Vet.

Those of us who were there when Star Wars was released, I think it has a lot to do with the action figures. Younger fans may find that confusing, but hear me out.

I'm 36. So I was there when Lucas merchandising blitzkrieg was beginning and I ate it up. As did all my friends. And the Boba Fett figure was one you could only get by saving up proof-of-purchase stamps. It made him rare and coveted and unique. I think that helped build up his image. Only 3 minutes of screen time? Who cares! He was a cool figure!

Originally, Fett's popularity was because they never explained anything about him or the other bounty hunters, which did add some nice mystery, but Fett unlike the others, succeeded. Also, he was the only one of them with a speaking role, his armor hinted at ties to the imperial look but never was elaborated on, again more mystery, and probably most effective, he had a jump/jet pack. Every kid wanted a jetpack at some point in his life, or at least, the ability to fly. Thus, Fett = Cool.

Later, his popularity grew when his backstory was explained because of his Mandalore ancestry. Mandalorian = Doubleplus Cool.

I think it has to do with a mixture of cool looking armor, awesome gadgets, and zero personality.

- he never says much
- you never see his adult face
- he has loads of gadgets in his armour, the batman of bounty hunters
- he has a weird shaped ship?!? I don't know...he's just cool okay...not Samuel L.Jackson cool...but cool. Leave it at that.

I think what made him stand out was the other bounty hunters were all aliens of some sort, all big and furry/scaly. Boba was a nice sleek suit of medi-evil looking armour, with a jetpack and a grapple bracelet. Having a more prominent part in the movies helped, but I think its simply that his design looked better, and he had a cool name.

People get very interested in mysterious characters. Similar curiosity driven fandom has exploded characters from other mediums as well, for example Wolverine.

Actually, Boba Fett was always my second-favorite, as I've always loved IG-88 (and while not technically a bounty hunter, HK-47 in later years). But I've got to agree with most other people. He's mysterious, cool-looking, and just overall a very awesome character. To say nothing of the fact that he has a flamethrower, a rocket lawnchair, and a jetpack all incorporated into his suit. You've got to admit that his gear translates to the height of badassitude.

If you've read any of the books, there are a few that center around him. And he's incredibly bad ass in them. That's why I like him. Plus, he eventually convinces Luke to go to the dark side, after he crawls his way out of the Sarlaac. (That's right! He doesn't really die in Return of the Jedi!)

This story was supposed to happen in episodes 7,8 and 9, but Lucas said he isn't going to make them now. Sad face.

Empire would have been better with Dog The Bounty Hunter :) j/k

I really enjoyed Ep 1-3 and learning about Jengo Fett (spelling?). I would have loved to learn more about him, and wouldn't be against a movie about the Fett's.

You say that, but after the hash he made of 1,2 and 3, do you really want him making any more?

Nope, he comes from Leicester originally is why ;)

I actually didn't dislike them. But honestly, I would rather see his not-so-great versions of 7,8 and 9, then none at all. Unless someone else wants to try their hand at directing them.(NOT UWE BOLL)

It was Jango Fett, and a mini series about him would actually be kind of cool... as long as Lucas isn't allowed to write or direct it. Get some of the writers from the sci-fi not entirely canon books to do it.

The man has a friggin' jetpack... Jedi can keep their silly super jumps, Boba can fly dammit! That plus Mandalorian armor is sweet.

Boba Fett is Master Chief's cousin! It explains so much!

I was gonna say something along similar lines, that it was merchandising and not his on-screen character that made him famous. When I watched the movie for the first time (probably around 1992) he never made a lasting impression on me. In fact, I never remembered his name or anything.

His armour was also battle worn, which states in;
"the law of bad ass-ery" article 1.27, subsection D) any man still alive while having armour that has been beaten to a pulp should be referred to as "bad ass"

Um, Boba Fett is the only bounty hunter with a speaking part? Or any screen time other than a single tracking shot? Also note his close resemblance to Darth Vader, a known cool villain.

Well, he looked cool. He was pretty smart (as shown when he followed Falcon) and he wasn't afraid of Vader. And then there's the "No disintegrations" thing and Vader saying it especially to Fett.

Then the Expanded Universe made him even cooler. I remember as a kid seeing this cover in the comic rack:

Darth Vader + Boba Fett + duel + volcanoes = awesome.

Who?

kekekekekekekeke

Being the only bounty hunter really featured in the movie helps, but I think it was the mystery about him that made him so popular. You can't see his face, he barely talks and when he does it is strictly business, and having Vader specifically tell him "no disintegrations" definitely implied that he had disintegrated a target before, obviously to Vader's displeasure. Just the concept that he had worked with Vader before peaked my interest.

He's so damn popular that I don't know who he is. :P

Scruff McGruff was a MUCH better bounty hunter.

But really, I think everyone just liked him because he was flat-out badass, as others said. As time went by, he only got better, so I don't really think there's anything anyone could do to make Boba uncool at this point.

I'm sure a lot of this will be said in previous posts, but I'll reiterate anyway.

Lucas was surprised at how popular the Boba Fett Character was. If you recall, all six movies were actually just part of one big script that was supposed to be released as one movie. When Lucas discovered how popular Boba Fett was, he rewrote the beginning of his script to give him a backstory. He was technically supposed to be a support character with the signifigance of Admiral Ackbar or Wedge Antilles.

As for why he's so cool, it's kinda his role. Luke and Vader were destined to square off with one another. Everyone knew that Han aad the rest of the crew couldn't really help with that. So by having another villian in the story, one on par with Han in abilities, it sets the stage for some epic awesomeness.

Also, he was the most prominant member of the Bounty Hunters, he tracked and captured them instantly and effortlessly, his armor was cool (No one knew about the flamethrower, grapple hooks, and probably the Jetpack until Jedi, so those can't really count), and (big one coming!)...

HE STOOD UP TO VADER TO HIS FACE!!! Only Motti can really claim that he was on Vader's side and stood up to him, and he almost died for it. Fett showed he had no fear of Vader, so he becomes a legend...

I could go on over backstories and shit, but I'll just go with the fact that he's badass.
