Okay, here's the inspiration for this article. One time while I was at Walgreens with my Mom, I heard over the speakers "Sweet Child O' Mine". Only, it was sung by a woman who sounded like a momotone android. The song sounded copletly neutered, and there was no f***ing guitar!

So, what are some good songs with bad covers?

Cradle of Filths cover of Mr Crowley, seriously CoF, I love your music, STOP ripping off other bands. Ozzy is good, but is in a different style to you guys all together.

Van Halen's version of You Really Got Me is probably the biggest murder since Ed Gein.

Well, I grew up listening to a band called Me First and the Gimme Gimmes. They have a lot of albums out now, and all they do is they cover songs, but turn them into punk music. The worst I ever heard from them is stairway to heaven, which just sounded wrong at that tempo.

They had good songs though, but I guess that would have to be another thread.

Whoever this year's X factor winner was.
Her wailing cover of the Leonard Cohen's Halleluja. Audio Murder at it's best (worst?).

Doubly a shame because it stopped Jeff Buckley's really quite good cover of Leonard Cohen's Halleluja being christmas number one.

Also, the other X factor winner's equally wailing cover of snow Patrol's Run. I've just realised that I can remember neither the names nor the face of both of them, this makes me very happy.

This. They loose all the subtlety, variation in volume, and the slight hesitation in particular notes in the music to Erana's Peace.
It makes me hurt inside.

Their covers of Phantom of the Opera and My Favourite Things are great.

The cover which pisses me off most is probably nirvana's version of bowie's man who sold the world. It's not actually that bad, it's just the ignorant sods who don't realise it's a cover. Not sure why but that really, REALLY annoys me!!!!

Marilyn Manson's cover of "Sweet Dreams" by the Eurythmics was terrible. You just can't improve on the original.

^^ I actually left the country before I had to hear that wabbling bollocks. I heard it when I got home... I cried tears of rage.

I don't no who its by but I heard an acoustic version of Sex on Fire by the Kings of Leon on the radio. To make it worse the singer was female and it was about a quarter of the original speed

The only covers I listen to are Apocalyptica's and those are mostly good.

Wait... "All Along the Watchtower". There are a crapload of covers for that song and most are bad.

Yeah, that was Sheryl Crow. I thought of that awful, awful cover right when I read the topic title, before I read the first post. :)

Also, Madonna did a cover of American Pie which made me want to jab a fork in my eye.

OH. MY. GOD.

Holy crap. I nominate this worst cover ever! Don't touch Rick Astley! He doesn't like it!!!

You mean Lenoard Cohen? The Coen brothers are the brilliant directors responsible for such amazingness as Millers Crossing and No Country for Old men.

Gary Jules covering Tears for Fears' "Mad World" because of the innate overpopularity of it thanks to Gears of War.

Blech.

Every cover of Iron Man ever recorded in the history of mankind. Actually, non-recordings too. That way we can include all of the garage bands that play it for high school talent shows.

Ditto. Pearl Jam also covers the Who from time to time, not as badly but still not well.
The Murderdolls' version of Billy Idol's White Wedding is pretty execrable too. The original was fairly gothy, but that's no excuse to turn it into death metal and then remove most of the metal.

I'm going to get stoned by an angry mob, but while it's not a "worst", I don't care for Tina Turner's version of CCR's Proud Mary. Yes, I know it's more popular. Shut up.

While we're at it, do sample-containing/bar copying songs count for screwing over the original material? If so, the grand prize winner is Kid Rock for butchering Sweet Home Alabama and Werewolves of London AT THE SAME TIME, with the Black-Eyed Peas sampling Misirlou and Nas sampling Iron Butterfly a close second. Just...listen. I heard it on the radio and I've never heard it since, even the DJ didn't like it and it was a BBC station

I couldn't even listen to the rest of that, malos. I heard the intro guitar solo replaced by those f**ked up warbbling violins and just checked out.

I have to say that stupid woman from the X factor covering Hallelujah is the worst cover I heard. Cohen would be spinning in his grave (if he was dead).

I heard about this cover but I never listened to it until now but what the hell? She added lyrics to that incredible song!

Metallica's cover of...anything...is awful. I know that the quarter-billion fanboys who flame me for explaining the pure fact that Megadeth is better will also pour gasoline on me for this thread too, but Thin Lizzy and Bob Seger are and always will be far superior to Metallica in musical talent.

I knew a girl who was a Limp Bizkit fan and arguin to her abot why bizkit fails she said "but listen to the lyrics for 'behind blue eyes'they're so meaningful"

I second that. It's right behind Jessica Simpson's cover of These Boot Were Made For Walkin'. I'm not even a huge fan of the original, but that has to be the laziest cover ever done. She brings NOTHING to the song.

I know it's been said before but I'd have to say the Murderdoll's cover of White Wedding. I honestly believe that Aiden did the song justice because it retains the slightly dark feel to it.

I'd also say The Showdown's cover of Carry On Wayward Son. Their voices are just too deep for the song. They also made it more metal sounding which isn't bad, but it's not good for this song.

Okay, that beats my suggestion easily, since you could just listen to the guitar track from that song and imagine it with Steven Tyler and Run DMC (optional)
