Van Halen's version of You Really Got Me is probably the biggest murder since Ed Gein.

dude, a dj on my local rock station played the original version and some dumb bitch called in asking why he would such a terrible cover of an awsome VH song

I just wanted to go find her and slap her upside the head

Dont know if its been said yet but Maddona's cover of american pie is horrid

What did the dj say as a response to that? I'm interested if he totally ridiculed her or not.

Honestly I don't like anyone who covers Nine Inch Nails. I'm cool with some of the remixes but their sound couldn't be done well by anyone else actually. That said I prefer NIN's original version of Hurt more than the one of Johnny Cash.

sorry but im gonna have to disagree with you, Johnny Cash's cover of hurt was awsome

well this particular dj is known for being very passive, so unlike Rikker (another dj on the station, who would have chewed her out) the guy just told her that it was originaly done by the kinks back in the 60's and that was it.

Any cover of Personal Jesus that's not the original. (It is the brainchild of Depche Mode and only Depche Mode. Anybody who says otherwise is wrong and shall be punched in the face.) And Madonna's hack job on American Pie. Of course, this thread has introduced me to many more musical horrors.

No mention of Joss Stone murdering the white stripes song "fell in love with a girl"? We live in sad times where worbelly singers are praised more than talented songwriters.

Whoever this year's X factor winner was.
Her wailing cover of the Cohen Bros' Halleluja. Audio Murder at it's best (worst?).

Doubly a shame because it stopped Jeff Buckley's really quite good cover of the Cohen Bros' Halleluja being christmas number one.

Also, the other X factor winner's equally wailing cover of snow Patrol's Run. I've just realised that I can remember neither the names nor the face of both of them, this makes me very happy.

No disrespect to Jeff's (definitive) version, but the reason it got so much exposure during Christmas is because it was the x factor single. Personally i like alexandra burke's cover, because of the bombastic, over the top production; though Jeff's version is the definitive in my eyes ( ears?)

I'm backing you up on that. Any song that can reduce me to tears is a good song, even a cover. NIN origional is almost on par with the Cash cover, but the ending just ruins the mood.

You know there is this "Never gonna give you up" cover (or for everybody: The Rick Roll song) and it's.......well listen.

Dear God. I thought the Barry Manilow cover was bad. I rarely call any woman by this word, as it is a very harsh, vulgar word, but Ashley Tisdale is a bitch for taking the brilliance of Rick Astley (I'm exaggerating, of course, but bear with me) and completely violating it. At least Barry had the good graces to keep it somewhat retro.

Razorlight - Fairytale of New York. I'd find a YouTube link but it's dead for me right now. It's the most emotionless self-appreciating wreck of a song I've ever heard. Such a shame, the original by The Pogues was fab.

Avril Lavine's (not even going to pretend I know how to spell it) cover of Chop Suey by System of a Down. I mean, as far as they go, Chop Suey isn't even a great in my opinion, but her cover is worse than a long, painful drawn-out death.

i think that manford mans earth band covering "blinded by the light" is horrible. it completely changes the tone and meaning of the song, not to mention removing more than half the lyrics. the worst part is that most people dont even realize its a bruce springsteen song. o yeah and i forgot about everlast covering "folsom prison blues" its so bad its kinda funny.

Okay, here's the inspiration for this article. One time while I was at Walgreens with my Mom, I heard over the speakers "Sweet Child O' Mine". Only, it was sung by a woman who sounded like a momotone android. The song sounded copletly neutered, and there was no f***ing guitar!

So, what are some good songs with bad covers?

Yeah, that was Sheryl Crow. I thought of that awful, awful cover right when I read the topic title, before I read the first post. :)

Also, Madonna did a cover of American Pie which made me want to jab a fork in my eye.

Thanks for the info. Now I have a new victim at the top of my death list.

And that rhymed at the end!

Agreed.

darthzew:

Wait... "All Along the Watchtower". There are a crapload of covers for that song and most are bad.

Agreed. The only versions of that song I'll listen to are Dylan's and Hendrix's.

Listening to that might actually make me start cutting myself, and I'm as far from emo as possible.

I know. The worst part was them changing the word "deuce" (as in car) to "douche".

A lot of the stuff that plays in malls at Christmastime is horribly mutilated Christmas carols.

I once heard a horrible cover of Sgt Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band in which the vocals were ripped straight from the original, and the chorus was pretty much played over and over with a generic drum beat in the background.

Girls Aloud and Sugababes cover of Walk This Way. It's just horrible

Blasphemy against Aerosmith

Slightly worse than the Run DMC version

I liked the Run-DMC version:(.

I actually think "Never gonna give you up" is an good song by itself (excluding the stupid rickroll phenomenon) but THIS. THIS is what kills babies and rapes ladies.

What the fuck is that bitch doing?
Avril Lavigne - Fuel (Metallica Cover) Although this one was planned it is still amazingly lacklustre. The band I felt did an adequate job however she doesn't know what the hell she is doing.
You could see the Metallica band members wanting to walk out in shame but having to put on a brave face.

The worst cover ever has got to be Him's abhorred mutilation of a cover of BOC's Don't Fear the Reaper.

I would link you, but I swore never to go to that webpage ever again...

Fallout Boy did a cover of Beat It, it made me cry.

Also, The Vandals cover of Hocus Pocus, The Jonas Brothers cover of Take On Me, and the Rock Band version of Tom Sawyer.

Haven't heard of the first one, Jonas Brothers cover of Take On Me violently raped a true beautiful classic, and well...
To tell the truth, I liked the Rock Band version of Tom Sawyer better than the original, but maybe my views have changed now.

Gary Jules covering Tears for Fears' "Mad World" because of the innate overpopularity of it thanks to Gears of War.

Blech.

Good song. Though I heard it on Emmerdale once. (Why?!)

Leona Lewis' hysterical demolition of Snow Patrol's Run however. Biggest turd that I heard last year. People cried when it was on Live Lounge. But they sadly didn't cry at how astronomically shit it was.

What?!
The Jonas Brothers did a cover of Take on Me? Now I'm angry, which is quite an accomplishment considering that it's very difficult to get me out of the state of mind that my username reflects.
