I've been browsing the web, and I looked at a few products. Initially I thought about Rosetta Stone, but all the necessary apparel for it comes to... wait for it...

£339!

Yes,

£339!

So, I need some more options. Google is great and all, but I don't really trust testimonials except from actual people.

So, any suggestions for learning Russian or- while we're at it- any other language?

Not really. Unless there's a language course in your vicinity, they're mostly cheaper.
Also if you have friends who can speak Russian and they're willing to lay down some knowledge on you that might work. Don't expect to get anywhere past highschool level with the latter method though.

I agree with Sennz0r- a language course is the best way to go.

Well, that's not entirely true- total immersion in the language along with a course is the best way to go, but it's doubtful you'll want to travel all the way to Russia for that....

I thought Russian was just English with a thick, deep accent, with the no plural forms of word used and the word "Dah" thrown in a lot?

I'm in the same boat - I want to learn Russian too. I reccomend to, if you have one, ask a Russian friend. If not, attend a language course.

I know two things in Russian

Yob te mot (I think this is what it wa- equivalent of mother fucker
Vash karlic feeardeeaye (Spelled phonetically I have not seen it written as I heard from a fluent speaker of Russian)-Your lawn gnome is on fire

It's my first language... But it's pretty hard to learn... Very different from English.

So... I don't know if this helps, but when i was learning English a long while ago, I use some kind of cheap and easy grammar and sentence structure type of textbooks to learn the basics and then maybe find a friend/tutor and try to converse with them in Russian to improve it. Oh and just memorizing stuff from the dictionary in between helps too, especially if you want to learn how to write in Russian as well.

Well, I guess it's not much an advice =(

But it can work pretty well, I had a friend learn Japanese (which is much, much harder to learn then Russian, in my opinion at least) in about a year or two by using similar methods... Memorizing and copying stuff from the dictionary, trying to read things in it and then practicing it with actual Japanese speakers. He actually knows it pretty well now.

Watch Russian programs, talk with Russians, decorate your room with Russian flag and pictures of Vladimir Putin and Dmitri Medvedev and other Russian items and listen to the Red Army Choir.

Kaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaliiiiiiiiiiiinkaaaaaaaaaaa!

Oh, there are SO many ways to swear in Russian. Pretty much anything can be turned into a swear.

And the last thing doesn't make too much sense to me O_o

Vash Karlic is basically "Your gnome" but I can't think of anything that sounds like "feeardeeaye" and means that something is on fire.

You really, really, can't learn anything from this type of thing O_o

But this post seemed rather humorous in nature.

Oh, and by the way... If you hear some two or more random people speaking Russian near you, good chances are that they are discussing or making fun of you =P We are assholes.

Bah, I want to learn Russian too, but I don't know anything cheaper than Rosetta Stone and my school doesn't offer it. So I'm taking German, pretty far off, but meh.

I heard that in Russia the language speaks you.

The best actual method would be a local course, or finding some Russian speakers to make friends with, you really need to talk to actual people to get into a language.

hehehe

I live in Devon. This place is like a weird cross of Texas, Florida, and California in that it's apparently the UK 'Redneck' county, there are a lot of old people, and all the young ones surf.

We're the real surfers. We don't need no pansy warm water.

Seriously though, I highly doubt that I'll be able to find a Russian course near me.

Gourmon, d'ya think you could help?

I tried learning Chinese once, but I was only learning it from this Chinese student going to the local University. I'm prepared to put the effort in for Russian though, if only to have some usefulness in the next cold war and an extra chick-pulling attribute.

It won't take me long to get Rosetta Stone with my own money (£6 an hour, 9 hours a week, so 6 weeks. If they accept me.)but, you know, It's a lot...

I am not sure if it is one word or two, oor hell it may be more than that. I have just heard it said
I's pronounce (broke it down into syllables) fee are dee yay

No offence but Russia is a really horrible language to try and learn.

I spend three months in Russia over the summer and at the beginning of the trip attempted to learn the language, giving up after numbers and the alphabet =P Although that was pretty much enough to survive where I went to, but if you wanted to be able to speak coversationally then you will need more dedication than me.

I managed to get the alphabet, numbers (pretty useful) and some random vocab learnt in about 12 hours at Moscow airport using a fairly basic 'Learn Russian super fast!' kind of book. Not too expensive but not really all that detailed.

Russian is an Un-godly difficult language to learn, and rosetta stone doesn't work if you want to learn grammar, usage, inflections, slang, etc.
Try finding a Russian teacher, it will probably be expensive, but if you are going to learn a language, do it right
Edit: Russian teachers, as in a teacher whos native language is russian

Each to his own I say. With that aside, I also want to learn Russian after I master Spanish.

Try that link. The story and method of some guy that went from not speaking french to passing the test to get residency in Quebec or some such. He was already multilingual but the method looks solid enough. I am just starting to use it now to Learn french myself.

It's darn inexpensive and looks like it might work. Might try a local course to supplement it and get conversational experience as well.

Once you have conquered that bitch of a language, go to USA and boisterously sing the Russian national anthem over the US's. Then send me the video.

Wow. That's all the Russian I need to know :P

My best friend is actually from Moscow. Does your school teach Russian, or offer it as an after school activity?

There's this called a....
*gives you a piece of paper under the table with the word "Torrent" on it*

OMFG! I sprayed my monitor with cola when I read this! I am Russian, I should be a bit offended, but I'm not! This made my day ^^! (Actually I am offended, really badly, really pissed right now, but I thought I'd better be polite :D)

Nu koroche, I can't suggest any places that teach Russian, you see I never had the urge to search... Well, jelau udachi :) (wish you luck).

Podcasts. I'm trying to find a Polish one, but apparently they're really good.

If I may, I'd like to ask what the hell is Rosetta Stone?

Oh, and uhh...

Aardvark:

Idi nahhui, m'kay?

Where did you hear a Russian say "Dah!" alot? :D

Fraught... Hogan's Heroes. The russian girl in that says dahrlink a lot too.

I tried to learn Russian while I was living there. Picked up a few phrases to get by, it's difficult to learn. Strangely I learned to read it before I could understand the spoken language. Anyway, I never really picked up enough of it during my time there. As a bonus I have no idea the bad things my mother-in-law says about me. XD

I took a few High School-courses in Russian, and all I can say that it requires an absolute shit-load of work. Unfortunately the teacher and I were not on the same level when it came to principals about teaching, so I gave up.

Which is sad. It's a very fun language to learn, as long as you learn in the right way.

GOOD NEWS!!!!

Well i found a freakishly awesome website that has click and play free Russian audio lessons, plus a double CD download version. The CD is called 'Speak To Russian Women' and not only teaches you the normal fluff conversation, but teaches you how to open a conversation with a Russian woman, AND how to carry on a conversation.

It teaches you very sweet, romantic Russian phrases and also teaches you how to speak with her family. Plus it's got some cute slang that Russian girls love.

AND this CD download was only $25!

I got Rosetta Stone and then I was annoyed because it taught me basics, but as soon as I heard an actual Russian speaking every day conversation, I completely lost it.

But this Speak To Russian Women program was worth the $25. they'll send the CD's to you for $99, but the downloadable is quicker and simpler.

If you want the site it's http://www.speaktorussianwomen.com

I travelled to Russia in September '07 and used what I learned on the CD's. The girls I met loved it.

Hooray for spambots!

Ontopic:

I have no experience with russian but i have been learning Japanese for a while now. If you want a cheap method of learning without a course by a grammar book and study HOW the language works and then get a dictionary and use that to slowly expand your vocabulary, just don't use those shitty net dictionaries get a proper one. Only other thing you will need is the internet so you can learn crylic (i think that's it).

Let me guess.

Mail-order bride.

Personally, I'd suggest you drop the whole ill-conceived idea and learn French. I know, you wanted to learn Russian, but at least the French are so danged proud of their language they can be expected to have a non-profit centre for teaching it in almost any decent-sized city (google Alliance Francaise).

Are you suggesting that Russian is a language not worth learning and that our culture sucks and that our race should be wiped off the face of the earth? ARE YOU????? Obviously I'm joking :P

I lold.

Russian really is a bloody hard language to learn though. Japanese hardly seems difficult compared to it.

We have a huge russian community over here.
Frankly, it's starting to piss me off. >_>
