I'd say Greenpeace but they actually make a difference here in Brazil...
Not so sure about WBC, seeing as the "cause" they are trying to help is a load of prejudiced bollocks.
P.E.T.A apparently they put down about 4/7 of their animals, so much for protecting them.
4/7? Why such an odd fraction?
Exactly, but they have the mindset of "supporting a cause", even if it is huge crock of bull.
Yeah, I actually learned that in the research of this paper. Some even just threw the dead bodies in a dumpster behind a supermarket.
focus on the family is one that really irks me. Though it did give me a good laugh when my mom got a letter from them detailing why sin city was such a bad movie and she asked me why anyone would watch something like that to which I replied that's why it was awesome. Also the NRA though I agree with several points that they have and have no intention of giving up my second amendment rights they have a strong tendency to be alarmists over nothing.
Greenpeace. They are retarded.
If Focus On The Family is what I think it is, then you are absolutely right, it's a bunch of fuckery.
On the escapist we always expect people to elaborate instead of a stupid 4-10 word explanation, except in your case, saying they are retarded is pretty much an accurate description...
College Hippies | |
Oh, politicians/ opposition you mean? *sophisticated chortle*. I can't think of any majorly disruptive protest groups, apart from those already mentioned. Once upon a time I would of suggested the Orange Order but they have kept themselves out of the spotlight for awhile. I suppose the long-tail argument could apply here, very loosely but none the lees. There are so many different opinions and protests group that if a rally starts, there's usually another group of the same size or bigger that tells them to go shove it.
What are those seafaring folk who are basically considered a pirate organization? I forget what they're called.
I hope you aren't coupling Focus on the Family with Westboro Baptist "church". Two WAY different groups (Though I do find 'Focus' to be pretty darn conservative...I like Sin City!) As a Christian, I find Westboro Baptist the best example of bad protesters. Honestly, I have no idea how they can do what they do and call themselves Christians. It's really, really disgusting. Also: PETA. Yeah, dressing up like a chained animal while running into the executives of a beef distributor/fast food franchise and yelling 'meat is murder!' isn't going to help your cause. I don't know anyone who is going to change their mind by watching a reject mascot covered in red paint get arrested for being an idiot.
There was that Bush protesting woman who camped outside the ranch. She went from being approved of to being tolerated to being reviled, right? (I could be mistaken, she popped up in the news a number of times across the ocean, I bet you had a better view of that one.) To some people above:
I will just simply say I can't stand how people refuse to respect the law on the basis that they dislike "Christian Morality".
Oh yeah, try to find a random neo-nazi group who openly protests for their cause. Their very behaviour and dress style is usually very counter-productive, even if you take away what they're saying.
The pro-lifers who bomb abortion clinics. (Yeah, it sucks, especially when I'm pro-life. They're making me look bad man!)
Not nessecarily, from what I understand the Neo-nazi and KKK groups are starting to make somewhat of a comback. (Numberwise that is)
Argh, words cannot describe the hate I feel for those people.
Being European I didn't have any idea they existed. How are they still a legal organisation? On the other hand because of them the Patriot Guard Riders was formed. Possibly the most positively imaged Biker gang on the planet.
P.E.T.A They just make me want to buy more fur.
Oh snap. Nice one, I see what you did there..
some of madd's suporters are just plain old crazy and they have really strong views about drinking and make wide statements like
PETA, they seem to kill more animals than they help.
Although it's old, all of the groups that originally protested the Atari 2600 game "Custer's Revenge" ended up helping sales. The controversy gave free advertising and sales went up 700%
the peta episode of Penn & Teller's Bullshit is excellent and rather funny too they also make mention of greenpeace in an episode on environmental hysteria if i'm not wrong, they also have one of the founders of greenpeace who has disowned them. as for protestor who do more harm than good. there's an on going land dispute in ontario with the natives over some land in Deseronto, they blocked off a lane of traffic and i do believe set fire to something and being a bunch of jerks in general. a few ppl got arrested and they made the papers, however the best part came when the natives told them to stop doing protests on their behalf and they were not wanted and actually hurt the native cause. i laughed very hard at the response
Those people who ran onto the runway so planes couldn't land at (I think) Heathrow (or some other airport). The plane had to use more fuel to a) circle before lading and b) travel faster (i think) because they had to keep up with schedual due to the delay.
The ACLU, I feel like these people treat every little thing like the government is trying to become the Galactic Empire or something like that, I know that the American Republic is something that we will eventually lose to a strong, powerful leader, but these people are insufferable. Reading or listening to people from BADD (Bothered About Dungeons and Dragons) was like driving nails into my skull back when it was around.
Surprised no-one has mentioned Fathers 4 Justice before now. Dressing up as Batman and scaling Parliament does not a good father make. Plus the media tends to forget how most of the aggrieved fathers who aren't allowed to see their precious children were banned from doing so by the courts, usually for a bloody good reason.
agreed. They just act weird and do weird things and it freaks people out.
PETA - ...Do I honestly have to explain? Haven't we all heard of their shit by now? Major retards. Gay pride parades - Sorry guys, Making yourselves look like huge freaks and a major nuisance to everyone is NOT gonna make the rest of the world more likely to accept you... It's like rubbing salt in a wound to make it stop burning...
Oh, it's worse than that.
A bunch of protested spray painted "KFCruelty" on the side of a KFC not far from me. They were protesting KFC's apparent cruelty towards their chickens. Dispite the fact that KFC (in australia anyway) get their chickens from another company. The store had to pay a bunch of painters to paint over it.. Poor guys. Not as large scale as say.. Running onto a runway but hurting the small guys is just as bad.
I'm actually...it feels weird to say this. I guess I'm sort of proud? Of those dudes and ladies in the Riders. It's nice to see people sticking up for other people, ESPECIALLY people who tend to have a "reputation" like bikers get. You know what I mean, I think. Anyway...yeah...AWKWARD COMPLIMENTS: OVER.
I agree to this, actually. I'm all about equality, but you are absolutely right. It's just not a good idea.

Okay my fellow Escapists, I have a research paper to do in Advanced Composition class, and I'm doing it on the various groups who protest and wind up pissing people off than actually helping a cause. I got the two obvious ones, PeTA and Westboro Baptist Church, but I need a few more ideas and i was just hoping that some of you guys would know. Any help is greatly appreciated.
