My friend/colleague and I are going for a site which is a mix between what Engadget and Lifehacker cover and also our own unique hardware building site. I just finished the first real article and while I would love feedback on the actual article, feedback on the actual design and layout of the site is far more important to us at this time. But if the article on Firefox helps you out, then that's the best thing which can happen :]

I hope this doesn't come off as site-whoring or something (since there's absolutely no money being made from visitors coming to the site right now; actually money's being lost). We're just looking for feedback that isn't automatically positively biased towards us.

And being a neuroscientist/computer engineer, neither of us have much of an eye for this sort of aesthetics :(

Smooth edges, and generally nice kontrast.

However, it looks extremely much like a template.

Looks pretty good; fairly clean. Articles are well-written, as well, with the right amount of opinion interjected into an amazing amount of fact. My favorite thing is the sheer volume of links to back up what you're saying (which, I've noticed, you do very well here, too). The only real recommendation I have is to get more pictures or colors and make it more visually captivating. Make it more "yours."

EDIT: I know you have pictures within the articles; I did mean on the front page.

Neuroscience? Nice. I have a test on that tomorrow.

AAAAAAAAAAAaanyways, the site.

It looks very blog-like, if that's what you were going for it looks fine. Consider lowering the size letter of the titles a bit though, bit to big imo.

The dates of the articles are a little bit large, so are the boxes that contain them. I think you should move the line separating the white and grey to the left so that there is no excess grey to the left of the date. Doing that will also some titles from taking up 3+ lines, which looks like shit.

The "Home" tab looks a little lonely and sticks out a bit. If you plan on getting more tabs (which I highly suspect you will) then you shouldn't have to worry but if you don't plan on adding more tab than you might want to change how people go back to the home page. If you do change it, get rid of the black bar. Actually I would get rid of the black bar anyway. It looks odd when something goes Grey, Black, White instead of in order such as Black, Grey, White (colour tones and all that).

And I would use a different font colour then red when providing a link. It stands out too much and when you have a lot of links then it makes the article look like like this and I find that annoying. Find a colour that works well with black and white. The blue that most websites use is pretty good.

All this aside, it's a good website. I like the colours, I like the simple layout and I like the articles and the humour. It should become a great and well known website.

The grey makes me think of Tweakers dot net, which is a plus in that its a reliable site on technical stuff. It instantly gives a feel of business-like, factual, to the point, no bs (determine for yourself if that's what you're going for). Seeing as you got 'funnies' I'd at least go with elliminist's idea and pull a few images to the front page, make them miniatures if you fear bandwidth problems.

I'm missing the tags at the tail end of each article on the front page.

Consider adding a little caption to the title to denote what the page is about.

There's definately good page composition going on (this is the internet, standard recognizable stuff (in this case a blog) = good). I also love the little blurb in the bottom right, nice detail to add a personal note there.

Sidenotes (to be ignored at your leisure):
A logo is always good for recognition, but designing one can take a lot of time and effort.

Personally I'd do something to fill that top right. Move the title a bit to the right perhaps? Move the tabs to the right a bit and slot the title into the opening? Cutting into the space the top bar takes up could be messy though as the page is defined and dominated by bold large areas. Just make sure you've tried a few things and picked the one you liked best. Designing these things can entail endless fiddling...

Guru3D is a great site :]

And thanks for the ideas everyone; I really do appreciate it. A lot of what's been said I have to agree with; especially the bit about hyperlink colors and images. Now it's just a matter of waiting for the designer guy to get back to help implement all these great ideas.

Well, I decided to be a little adventurous and change the colors myself. How is it now?
