The Cabinet of Doctor Caligari.

Your sir win, one of my most favourite films of all time.
Tim Burton would be nowhere without this.

Well...i thought Burton was influenced by low budget horror films and anything to do with Ed Wood...but sure if you say so...

Well maybe implying that his sole influence was this was a little bit presumptuous and wrong, however it cannot be denied that it's this era of film that has had one of the largest influences upon his work visually (conscious or not) and probably a fair few of his noted influences.

I will laugh hard if he's actually never seen the movie...

The top 3 of my list: (IMO the 3 cult film that defines our generation)

Battle Royale
Matrix (just the first film)
Freddy Got Fingered

I've never seen Star Wars before, though everyone assumes I have. I'm watching the original trilogy on PSP this week, will watch the prequel trilogy later. Funny thing is when I'm watching it, I already know just about every bit of the film, it feels like I've seen this film so many times before. I know all of the details of the plot, like the astroid is a monster, and Yoda lifting the X wing with the force. Thanks to all the Star Wars games I know all the characteristics of al the fighters and weapons as well...... It's scary.

You can skip the prequels...it's not like they even exist or anything...

And knowing my luck after spending all this time making my point he probably is oblivious to its existence haha.

Are you saying you are bemused by the fact that I haven't seen the Aviator, Get Carter, and my personal favorite, Inglorious Bastards...a movie that isn't even out yet? WTF is this thread?

ooooook, I've said i gotta remove some, stating that i just started adding everyones suggestions before realizing that they all aren't really essentials...

And the new Inglorious Bastards coming out is actually a remake...

Wish people weren't so bloody critical sometimes...

While it's not the best, perhaps arguably not particularly 'important', I think that everyone should watch - once -

Irreversible (2002) Gaspar Noe

Let's be honest, anyone who wants to see that more than once is probably mentally unstable.

I own it, and have multiple diagnoses from a half dozen psychiatrists and psychologists in a decade of treatment, yes. My 'crazy' friends like it, most of my 'normal' friends don't. I don't watch the whole movie anymore, by myself, just the big 2 scenes that earned the movie it's notoriety.

So, while I might have said something about there being artistic and technical merit that stands out on a second view, your statement is not inaccurate.

I have one more to add, thank you for smoking, that is Aaron Eckheart's greatest role ever, and possibly one of the most funny movies about the power of speech.

The list has been taken down for a major league over haul... I'm going to composite from the list a set of twenty, and we can then all argue about what's on that...

Nobodys really mentioned much world cinema in this list, so I'd like to add:

Amelie
Run Lola Run/Lola Rennt
Oldboy
I'm A Cyborg
The Devil's Backbone
Night Watch/Nochnoi Dozor

Also, as an aside, the one film I'm constantly shocked by people saying they've never watched it is the Muppet Christmas Carol - seriously, I thought everyone had seen it!

Ah, the radio and even the TV shows count but the only good thing about the film is Stephen Fry as the book imho.

Did you know he's done an audio book for the first one?

Sitting right next to me, along with both scripts and the game. :)

Seven Samurai (if you don't know about this movie...)
Drunken Master (Legend, old one, I don't care)
Journey to the West (There are several good movie versions of the book, check them out)
Army of Darkness
Versus (so campy it's awesome)
Equilibrium (Gun-fu!)
Gattaca (awesome)

That's all I can think of off the top of my head.

Anyone who is even remotely a fan of Rock n' Roll has to watch This Is Spinal Tap.
The movie is one of the most hilarious things I have seen, and the documentary style can fool people into thinking that Spinal Tap is a real band, if they didn't do much research beforehand.
They play some pretty sweet songs, (Tonight I'm Gonna Rock You Tonight for the WIN)and it does the whole 'Rise and fall thing' pretty well. The ending is... Sort of confusing for me, but it made me feel pretty happy on the inside.
Go and watch it now, it is AWESOME.

EDIT: Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz are also must-see movies. Hilarious, well done, and... Hilariously hilarious.

My list would include many said here, but...
Godfather (Parts 1 and 2)
Donnie Darko
Shaun of the Dead
Dawn of the Dead (original, please...)
Scarface
Die Hard
The Prestige
Rec
28 Days Later (much better than '28 Weeks', in my opinion)
Enter The Dragon.

That's all I can think of now, it's late...

Don't think City of God has been mentioned, or Fifth Element.

Both of those are must see films.
