Pulitzer Laureate Posts: 711 Joined: 28 Dec 2008 | I can blind type really well. Usually I never look at all so doing this comes easily. |

Muckraker Posts: 252 Joined: 7 Feb 2008 | Heh, you really had to challenge me at my own game, haven't you? I blind-write a lot of times, mainly to get writer's block out of my system but sometimes to just put all of my ideas out on paper. I'm actually blind-writing right now,, if you want to believe it. The thing that usually messes me up most is recalling where I was after I accidentally delete soemthing that i know is a mistake. It's not as though I'm that great at it, but like I said, I have a lot of practice with it. Unfortunately, this only really applies to Western keyboards. I suck at dvorak and azerty layout, but I supposed that's to be expected (since I don't really have that much training with those keyboards). It'ss a fun tool, especially when you're trying to concentrate on something else: (like checking out that cute blond talking on the phone or watching to make sure your friend doesn't steal your food), but for the most part I like to put a blindfold over my face and just concentrate on images that i'm trying to write up. I've used it a couple of times in academic writing, but usually not too much: having too many spelling errors usually makes it so that I lose a point (or several, depending on how bad it is). Some of the toughest habits to break (as you might have already seen), are reversing letters due to typing too fast, but it's still usually not too bad. Sorry if I rambled a bit, I usually use this (like I said before), for stream-of-consciousness writing, so I tend not to measure my words very carefully. |

Paperboy Posts: 27 Joined: 12 Jan 2009 | Here's my go with eyes closed: I'm typing this with my eyes closed. I'm good at typing without looking at the screen. It comes pretty easily to me, and I would bet on zero errors - not to be arrogant. Guess I paid attention in typing class. |

Muckraker Posts: 231 Joined: 10 Oct 2008 | Blind typing...it's not hard. I'm watching tv right now, not my screen. :-) |
Gone Gonzo Posts: 1697 Joined: 7 Oct 2008 | Well, this is my attempt. I looked at the keyboard once to get my bearings on where the center line thingy was for my hands, but I do a fair bit of blind typing... Wait... Am I supposed to leave mistakes in? Because I didn't look when I deleted them. That works, right? ...Drat. |
Muckraker Posts: 253 Joined: 10 Dec 2008 | I usually can type blindly pretty well while correcting any mistakes that I make by remembering where my fingers have touched. This is blind typed and I don't think there are any errors in it yet (because I am not looking...). |

Beat Writer Posts: 209 Joined: 6 May 2008 | I taught myself blind typing when I worked at Cable and Wireless (now Virgin), I had so much typing to do but with no time limit, so I just made myself learn through trial and error. I do have a bugger of a time with this laptop keyboard as the hyphen and numbers are in a different place to a normal keyboard. Interestingly, I can't remember where any of the keys are, and if I think at all about what I am doing then I completely lose it and can't figure out where the next letter is - strange huh? That was done blind, and I managed to hit the hyphen! Yay! Guess I'm finally getting used to this bloody thing! I've typed this section with a towel over my hands, which I guess is more of touch typing, if I paid any attention to the touch marks on the keys )looking now, they are the F and J keys). I have been doing office and temping work for eleven years now, so that's probably why I can do it so well. I haven't found any other typists who can blind/touch type but can't remember where any of the keys are. I guess it's subconscious now. |

Impressive, I've always had trouble typing on laptops as well. |

Press Junketeer Posts: 452 Joined: 19 Aug 2008 | I actually find it a little depressing that I can type pretty much anything without looking at the keyboard...just proves how long I've spend 'honing' these skills. (Yes, that was all typed with my eyes shut). |
Pulitzer Laureate Posts: 805 Joined: 22 Oct 2008 | heh. I'm a computer science major. I write for a living. The only mistakes I make are when I forget to capitalize correctly :D or when I'm in a hurry |
Gone Gonzo Posts: 1400 Joined: 15 Aug 2008 | I always blind type. In fact, I type slower while looking at the keys, and I make more mistakes. |
Copy Clerk Posts: 55 Joined: 23 Dec 2008 | If you just focus on the F and J keys, blind typing isn't that hard. Just try to feel the little bumps on the keys and you'll have no trouble at all. I can even tell when i made a mistake now and correct it without looking. It's a bit weird. Typing a lot in the correct position helps significantly, I would suppose. This entire post was blind typed and has not been edited. EDIT: I can only touchtype well on my MacBook and some PCs. I spent four years only using a PowerBook and now I can't type correctly on any desktop. |
Pulitzer Laureate Posts: 884 Joined: 19 Sep 2008 | I usually look at the screen while typing, so this is my test of how I do with my ehes closed. {open} Hey, not bad. Even got the comma right! |
Gone Gonzo Posts: 3802 Joined: 28 Feb 2008 | I never really watch while I;m looking at the keyboard, though it is kinda tough to do so without looking at the screen. One error, no backspace. Not too bad! |

Vault Legend Posts: 2016 Joined: 30 Jul 2008 | Blind typing, eh? Okay, whole post, blind mode. Let's see... Quite frankly, I think that typing, for me at least, has become an exercise in futility, largely because of so much typoing class and experience. I still make mistakes, but at this point, typing out and answering these posts have become almost a form of showing off,f. Which I'm not usually okay with. Ah well, I suppose it's unavoidable. I think that blind typing is a good Geigar Counter for one's typing ability. It does show how well you know your keyboard layout, either by sbconscious or conscious memory. But ultimately, it doesn't really matter, because people can be happy at any stage of the "proper" yping technique. So really, it's more about what you like, how you type, and what works best for you. Ah well, I think I'm rambling... Overall, I do think that I'm fairly good at blind typing. So, Escapists, how did I do? |
Infamous Scribbler Posts: 620 Joined: 23 Apr 2008 | Alright let's see how this turns out... eyes are closed, not doing any editing... if my fingers have missed any numbs I'll be totally off track, so I hope mario teaches tyyping paid off. Thisi This is making me realize I make a lot of errors but correct them quickly as I go along |

To be perfectly honest, it's as much a matter of remembering the particular muscle movements for a word as it is remembering the layout of your keyboard. Touch typists do this all the time, and it can get quite interesting after a while.
On that note, weeble weeble schlup. Yep. Still correct.
