Muckraker Posts: 226 Joined: 3 Jun 2008 | Me and my friend were actually planning on writing a manga series, but we went to just about every length we could to avoid being generic and lame (like I consider a lot of anime/manga to be) The main character is, for starters, over 30, for once, and the story isn't annoyingly complex and frustrating to attempt to understand. The main character wears armor and uses a sword, his partner wears a long coat and carries lazer pistols. It may sound random, but we've actually spent quite a while thinking it out. If we ever decide to animate it, I'll let you know. |

Gone Gonzo Posts: 1652 Joined: 2 Nov 2008 | FLCL is pretty good, 6 episodes long. Now and Then, Here and There is great too, another short one, 13 episodes I believe. |
Infamous Scribbler Posts: 688 Joined: 22 Dec 2008 | Though I disagree with your appraisal of Neon Genesis, I must recommend at the highest of high the show FLCL. It is as deep or as shallow as you want it to be, and it is serious and hilarious at the same time. It is a Taoists dream come true, really. Also I will recommend Excel Saga. If you've watched a few types of anime you will die laughing at the stereotypes and jokes at the expense of other animes, never mind the show itself, and even if you haven't given literally everything (I'm talking to you, Prince of Tennis or whatever the hell it is) a shot, I guarantee you'll still find plenty to laugh at. The only caveat I can give is that you might not be ready for the voice and its speed. It is the most ludicrously energetic thing I've ever seen, and I have not doubt there are plenty who might not like it, but I think it's still worth a shot. |

I don't mind, but no making fun of my tastes, or I'll be reaming the hell out of ya. So... Yu Yu Hakusho And a host of things that aren't in english yet, but are rather good and they'll definitely get licenced and sent over. |

Gone Gonzo Posts: 1198 Joined: 2 Oct 2008 | Ok so to update that list I made... Bleach and FLCL are both on the list. I'm shocked that I forgot FLCL cuz that was a great anime. |

I second Ryuzaki here. Death Note, while not so big in the hack'n'slash that you say you like, more than makes up for it through it's cat and mouse chases between the protagonist and antagonists. It's definitely worthwhile to look into, at least. |

Your tastes seem really similar to mine, I really recommend Now and Then, Here and There. Don't let the first episode fool you, the anime is as serious as they come. |

Lol I don't think there is any protaganist and antaganist, except for what the viewer thinks. Reasons I love Death Note |
Pulitzer Laureate Posts: 704 Joined: 27 Nov 2008 | Full metal panic of course looking at your taste code geass may not appeal to you (a lot like deathnote but with action) and the melancholy of haruhi suzumiya is not for everyone (school drama + Sci Fi + Detective) |

It combines silly, ridiculous bursts of shonen spaz with subtle, complex political and social issues. The character development is surprisingly good for an anime of its kind, the fights are appropriately paced, and it rarely loses its sense of direction. It manages to find a nice balance between drama and humor, even if the latter occasionally wedges itself in uncomfortably when you're trying to sympathize with a villager who's been betrayed by their colleagues. Also, the main character is rather annoying and facepalm-worthy as the series progresses but if you can look past its flaws then you're in for a treat. EDIT: Oh yeah, it's over 350 episodes long so be prepared for a long ride. |

Yeah...no One Piece |
Pulitzer Laureate Posts: 884 Joined: 19 Sep 2008 | Golden Boy is really funny (the only anime I've ever liked) and only 6 episodes. It is a little on the ecchi side, but it wasn't enough to put me off. |

I'm assuming you're talking about Haibane Renmai... which is a pretty good anime... lots of talking... I saw someone mention Scryed... DON'T WATCH THAT ONE, total waste of time. I recommend Mai Hime, Mai Otome (season 2 of the other one but its good), and Scrapped Princess. |
Beat Writer Posts: 224 Joined: 13 Jan 2009 | Well I've just recently finished watching, "Ergo Proxy", and I liked all the anime on your list (share most of your dislikes too, but I do like Death Note). It get's pretty wierd in places mind, but I like that when it fits with the story, unlike the end of evangellion. Oh yeah another one I watched a while back that I enjoyed a lot was "Serial Experiment Lain" it's all about the internet and it's intergration into real life I suppose, another wierd one mind :| . |
Beat Writer Posts: 127 Joined: 25 May 2008 | You should totally check out .HACK//Sign, it's really great. Alright, it's not that action oriented, but it has this excellently mysterious ambiance and some very well thought out characters. Most of the show actually focuses on these various characters and their personal dramas rather than on the overarching plot. Ergo Proxy. This one has a nice blend of sci-fi action and deep (albeit slightly confusing) storyline. Just think goth girl with gun, robots, monsters, and Aristotle. Monster. What can I say? This is my favorite anime by several miles of quality. Again, not big on the action, unfortunately. It's also rather long (74 ep.), but you just can't pass it up. It's about being good, being evil, finding redemption, making amends, relying on others, not relying on them, running, chasing, justifying and a whole lot more. Suffice to say, it's excellent. It follows the story of a doctor who feels he has to kill a young man whose life he once saved since finding out the young man is actually a serial killer. Check it out. Paranoia Agent. I see a few other people have recommended this one, and for good reason. It's a bit trippy, but so emotionally powerful that I can't call it anything other than great. |

Might have to check that one out myself, you've sold it well ;) |
King of the Yetis Posts: 2539 Joined: 15 Jul 2008 | Sadly most of this season's offerings are, to put it bluntly, absolute shite. Unless you're a teenage girl or a pedophile. I recommend. Welcome to the NHK. To Aru Majutsu no Index (currently running and quite a nice mix of esp/magic) Skip Beat (Yes. It's for teenage girls. No. I'm not gay. Seriously it's awesome. One of the few 'funny' anime (that is funny to people who don't wish they were Japanese)I've seen. Death Note is awesome although it tapers off a bit towards the end. Gungrave, despite being based on a video game and despite having one of the worst opening episodes ever conceived (even worse than Berserk's famously terrible opening) it's actually fucking awesome. Machiko No Hachin has been interesting so far. It's got a nice aesthetic going on. Monster was very good, if only because it's a bastion of maturity in a sea of childish bullshit. Last Exile is nice steampunk fantasy. |

i was going to recommend him ergo proxy but judging by his list it seems like he may not like it. |
Gone Gonzo Posts: 2809 Joined: 7 May 2008 | I rather like Soul Eater, but some may find it a little immature. I originally started watching it because the animation is so fantastic, but I eventualy found myself hooked. If you're looking for a super serious action type anime, try Gantz. I didn't really like it much, but you might. I'd advise you to buy the manga somewhere, though, because it has a bullshit filler ending. I've heard good things about Berserk, but I've never actualy bothered to watch it. I hear it also has a filler ending, so I'd advise you to get the manga for that one as well. I personally rank Beck as my favorite anime of all time. It isn't actiony, but it hooked me almost instantly. |

You might want to check out Hajime no Ippo. It's basically the same thing but with boxing. Oh and it has an episode where a dude punches a bear to death. |
Muckraker Posts: 228 Joined: 6 May 2008 | xxxHoliC - Seems wordy to start with, but the stuff it comes out with is mind blowing. Shakugan no Shana - Looking at your list this will be much more up your alley. You won't regret buying this one. The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya - This one doesn't even need explaining. The episode order might! Try to watch it in chronological order, as the broadcast order makes things more confusing. If you can tolerate Crunchyroll then Skip Beat is showing a lot of promise, more of a comedy than romance, but not OTT comedy. There are others, personally I also think Black Blood Brothers would be good for you, but the rest are a bit wordy and might not be to your liking. |
Gone Gonzo Posts: 2067 Joined: 5 Jun 2008 | Hunter X Hunter and Berzerker, gotta see those because they have good story's and interesting characters but these animes are pretty old, still good animation though! |

Suppose your right to be honest, but I still reccomend it if you ever feel up for giving a new one a go, looking over your list again, one that I'd definately reccomend to you is Blood+, the series rather than the movie though, lots of action, really nice animation, and an awesome plot. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blood%2B |
Pulitzer Laureate Posts: 946 Joined: 6 Dec 2008 | Afro Samurai is pretty damn good, can't go wrong with Sam Jackson and Ron Pearlman voicing the principal characters... I'd also recommend the two Ghost in the Shell feature films if you like SAC... EDIT: You may also enjoy Record of Lodoss War, which is essentially an anime version of Dungeons & Dragons... |
Muckraker Posts: 282 Joined: 25 Oct 2008 | I think you should watch Great Teacher Onizuka. It's a really good anime, I'm not sure if you will like it though but I have watched it so many times and it's so good every single time. GTO FTW |

True story: I just came across a 5 dollar card for free because I found it in a box of gushers.
Anyways, i'm an anime fan and I haven't really picked up any new anime shows into my list of animes that I actually like watching. I guess the problem is that if they don't show any anime on television then I won't find out about them. I wanted to know what shows you would recommend to me? Please note that I do not want to hear Death Note (I just didn't like it), Naruto (the anime sucks, the manga is good), Neon Genesis Evangeleon (its not deep, its just confusing!), or Dragonball Z (it sucks period).
Here are all the anime that I like to watch (its not that much actually)
Cowboy Bebop
Read or Die
R.O.D the TV
Ghost in the Shell Stand Alone Complex
Hellsing
Full Metal Alchemist
Inuyasha (its a guilty pleasure)
Gad Guard
Gungrave
Black Lagoon
Trinity Blood
Rahxephon
.Hack//Dusk (another guilty pleasure)
Samurai Champloo
Trigun
Lupin the III (one of the best animes ever!)
I'm sure there are more than that, but I can't remember them all. I guess I like the action anime more than other types, but i'm not completely turned off to the whole romance anime like Love hina or stuff like that. I'm not closed minded. I guess i'm just not a big enough pervert to oogle animated girls.
I was thinking of checking out Gurren Lagen or something like .Hack//Sign.
I guess I just don't want to buy something and end up not liking it.
