This one has, hands down, some of the most visually interesting characters in anime and the quality of the animation is second to none. Also the fight scenes will make you wet your pants - they're that cool. |
Infamous Scribbler Posts: 688 Joined: 22 Dec 2008 | Oh, I did think of one other one that, if I remember correctly was fairly action-y but also really funny; Desert Punk. As to the person who recommended Welcome to the NHK: I watched the first... 2 episodes. Is it worth continuing or do you suspect that if I don't like it by then I'm probably not going to? |

one piece is horrible i would rather watch season 4 the bount episodes of bleach (that were not even in the manga i might add.)then any one piece episode or manga.if you want something funnier then one piece but still stupid then try rave master or anything else from hiro mashima because i think he's better then Oda Eiichiro as an artist and author. |

On-Topic: There are a lot of great suggestions on here, so I'm going to recommend one that hasn't been said yet. Higurashi No Naku Koro ni This is the single, most fucked up anime, I have EVER seen. I'm serous, It will freak. You. Out. Oh god, the theme song still haunts me to this day. |
Paperboy Posts: 47 Joined: 10 Sep 2008 | You seem to like action-based anime, so I recommend Berserk, and most of Gantz. Berserk is just pure, focused awesome, in a medieval, slight fantasy setting (Afew demons and things, but no wizards). The main character has a giant sword, but looks powerful enough to use it. Also, it has hilarious outtakes on the DVDs (The ones I hired, at least). I cannot recommend this anime enough, and if I had any disposable income that didn't go towards drinking, I'd buy it, even though I've already seen it all. Gantz is semi-sci-fi, with people dying around a certain time being transported to a room, given weapons and powered suits, and told to go kill some aliens. If the people survive, they go back to their normal lives until the next alien-killing mission. When they're in their normal lives, the main guy seems to git a bit too emo, but then goes insane during the missions. |

It's also awesome. The first half is available on DVD under the name "When They Cry", but will leave you monumentally confused and more than a little squicked. Also, who would have guessed watching the early episodes that |

Worth remembering that the "idea for" Afro Samurai was basically "An anime with Samuel L. Jackson in", the rest is just an excuse. |

I loved Evangelion however I swear it is the greatest mind fuck in the history of the world; granted the creator was high and depressed throughout the entire series, even still I cannot fathom the drug or amount necessary that could screw your head logically enough to create Evangelion. The ending was the ultimate mind fuckery. Bleach is awesome, which remains me I really need to pick up on that anime again. Actually I may just mouch of some suggestions here since all I watch now is Naruto and Bleach. Naruto is better in Japanese then translated, mostly because the phase "Believe it!" is never once uttered... thank the gods. That show still has a tendency to drag out a battle to extraordinary lengths. |
Gone Gonzo Posts: 2038 Joined: 7 Sep 2008 | I'm watching Hajime no Ippo (the new series) right now. It's a great anime. You can check out the manga if you want. The manga probably has the best representation of motion I've ever seen in print. Everything just feels kinetic for some reason (I do not know what the last statement means). It's the hard part of watching anime that's based off a manga. It either goes absent for a looooong time (like in Ippo) or goes into filleriffic territory (I'm looking at you Bleach, all that potential in the SS arc, wasted). Anybody here who knows how the Blade of the Immortal anime turned out (was it as awesome as the manga)? I only watched the first episode. |

Beat Writer Posts: 151 Joined: 2 Dec 2008 | Spriggan, must watch, do it lol. First 63 eps of bleach are pure awesomeness, everything after the Ichigo/Byakuya fight is crap and full of filler eps (they piss me off). Great Teacher Onizuka is a classic =D. |
Paperboy Posts: 16 Joined: 12 Jan 2009 | Elfen lied is just awesome, watch it, its like 14 episodes long short and to reiterate: very awesome. |
Pulitzer Laureate Posts: 857 Joined: 24 Mar 2008 | The Jungle was always peaceful and then came guu. One of the funniest and most bizarre of series. and Guu is a personal hero, though someone should call child services on that one kid's mother. |
Pulitzer Laureate Posts: 743 Joined: 4 Jul 2008 | I love FullMetal Alchemist, Lucky Star, Love Hina, Negima, and Haruhi Suzumiya. Ouran High School Host Club is also pretty cool. But yeah, not too into Shounen anime to tell the truth. Shoujo anime just attracts me for some reason, to the point where I get so involved I don't care if I'm being weird. |

No one is going to respect you by dissing something with poor grammar and spelling and failing to offer any suggestions in a topic designed for that express purpose. You say you'd rather watch the 4th season of Bleach yet don't contribute a single suggestion? How ignorant is that? TC isn't asking for manga, he's asking for anime. Are you really that dense? |
Gone Gonzo Posts: 1412 Joined: 19 Nov 2008 | I disagree greatly with what you say about DBZ but I'll let it slide. I saw you had Hellsing, but I'm guessing that's only the Hellsing anime; not the OVA. Go to you tube and look up Hellsing OVA 1. Awesome. Gurren Lagann was a fine diversion; but there were some things about it that I didn't like. I'll let you figure that out if you decide to watch it. Afro Samurai if you can find it. Only five episodes but they're amazing. |

Gone Gonzo Posts: 2142 Joined: 23 Jan 2008 | Well, good sir. I just watched through the first series of Kanon. It is considered something of a classic. The first series are 13 episodes, and later they did a different version of it which lasted 24 episodes. (like many animes do)
Guess we're two peas in a pie. The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya is just.. pure genius, and Ouran is a lot of fun, as is Love Hina. (only too bad it has become so popular and sold itself out a bit) I have to say I prefer Shōjo as well. So much more depth. First anime series I completed was FMA, but I do not find a need to categorize it. Same thing with Full Metal Panic. (<3) |

It's a great show but I'd avoid spending money on it, they're going to be making a better version more in keeping with the Manga in April, same everything just with a better story. |
Copy Clerk Posts: 100 Joined: 13 Jan 2009 | I'm kind of an old-school anime fan who's just getting back into it after six years or so, so most of my recommendations are from 5-10 years ago: Record of Lodoss war is good, especially the first 8 episodes of the original OAV. The last 5 feel kind of rushed (the OAV was based on a series of 8 novels: the first 8 eps are based on the first novel, but the last 5 summarize the plot of the last 4 novels so they are very thin plot-wise). The Lodoss War: Chronicles of the Heroic Knight TV series is okay, but a lot more childish than the OAV. I thought the Crysania OAV just stank. Oh, and Slayers is great fun for D&D-style action and humour. One anime magazine I read said "Lodoss War is the kind of epic story you want your D&D game to be. Slayers is the kind of kill-the-bad-guys-and-take-their-stuff plot your games are actually like." El-Hazard is a lot of fun. The first OAV is the best. The second OAV is okay. The TV series has its moments. Vision of Escaflowne is pretty cool, at least the first two-thirds. It's basically a D&D-type setting with mecha that are powered by dragon hearts. I think it's technically a shounen series and has its share of romantic plot, but if that's not your thing there's enough action and intrigue going on to make up for it. The movie is decent too, but is a completely different take on the characters and plot. If you can find it, Haunted Junction is hysterically funny. It's about a haunted school and the student council, who are ghost hunters. I totally agree that Rurouni Kenshin is the best samurai series ever. The Kyoto episodes are the best, but it's pretty good overall. Check out Nadesico and The Irresponsible Captain Tylor for fun sci-fi anime with good action. Ninja Scroll is a classic and the best film in its genre. Everyone should see it. Don't be fooled by another film called "Ninja Resurrection". It's not a sequel to Ninja Scroll and it sucks. There's another one called "Sword for Truth" that claims to be as good as Ninja Scroll. It's not--stay away. I like Gunslinger Girl. It's about 12-year-old girl cyborgs who conduct brutal assassinations, then have tea parties where they discuss their lives. Some of my friends found the tea party parts dull, but I think the gunfights more than make up for it. Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust is better than the original Vampire Hunter D in every way: better animation, better character design, better story, better music, better voice-acting. The only problem was the version my friend has had badly mixed audio (it was hard to hear dialogue over the music and explosions) and there was no subtitle option. Newer versions might be better. |
Beat Writer Posts: 206 Joined: 11 Apr 2008 | So far people have already sold Monster, Elfen Lied, Welcome to the NHK, GitS:SAC, ect. I loved Claymore personally. It starts out as a "girls with swords" anime but starting with the Ep 5 it goes from good to addictive. I still find myself waiting impatiently for the next chapter every month. If you just like the manga, some creative soul put the chapters on Youtube set to music which makes for a novel way of reading a manga. |
Beat Writer Posts: 135 Joined: 25 Dec 2008 | I don't see "Berserk" or "Elfen Lied" in there. :O Check those out as well. As for your list, my first choices would consist of: Out of them all... Spoot... Full Metal keeps me coming back, for sure. |

For some reason, we seem to share a few things. |
Infamous Scribbler Posts: 587 Joined: 5 Jun 2008 | Claymore Those 4 are all very violent and very bloody if your into that sort of thing Code Geass (Possibly best ending to an anime ever, i was completely confused till the last 10 minutes and it rocked) These 3 will make you think while watching them, they're very clever and will require you to pay attention to know whats going on. Full metal Alchemist - All round Brilliant anime Bleach These 3 are Really good although quite long bleach is 200 episodes still running, D gray man is just over 100, finished but might get another season at some point because it doesnt conclude very well. And law of Ueki is 51 and FREAKING FANTASTIC. If you like more bloody anime, watch Darker than black, if you like complex anime watch ergo proxy, if you want something thats not too serious then watch Law of Ueki. And if you just like anime then watch them all because they're all worth the time to watch |

Yup yup, similar tastes in some aspects. Hehe.. yeah.. it's powerful at many stages. There is a particular scene in FMP that really got to me. I can't bear to retell it again here on the Escapist though.. but the series are truly worthwhile. |

Anime is a strange thing, essentially because it's by the Japanese, who can make anything sad, hilarious, morbid, or just plain disturbing. |
Gone Gonzo Posts: 1422 Joined: 7 Jun 2008 | Evangelion. Watch it...NOW! Other then that, R.O.D., but since it's already on your list, I have no more ideas. Those are my two favorites. |
On the Record Posts: 5974 Joined: 7 Feb 2008 | DON'T watch Evangelion unless you like... 1) Depressed Teenagers and Angst Instead watch RahXephon, it's sort of like NGE, except the characters are likeable and react like real human beings, it's also about music instead of religion, and it has a happy ending...sort of. Scrapped Princess is a personal favorite, it's about a 15 year old girl prophesized to destroy the world on her 16th Birthday, it has a great ending and a really sharp story. One Piece is, in my opinion, the only Long Running Show worth watching, it's consistantly creative and always fun, unlike Bleach or Naruto which fall into boring very quickly, Naruto is the worse of the two though. Gurren Lagann is a bargain, you get 9 Episodes per volume, way better value than most series' out there. That and it's a rockin show. The Big O is sort of like Batman mixed with Dick Tracy with Giant Robots thrown into the mix, it's wickedly snazzy and very cool. |
