So, I've been seeing this a lot lately, someone will ask what we might find an ignorant question, and eight hundred people who are rather new will respond, "Have fun being banned.", "You'll be banned for this", etc. Hell, even some older members do it. You know who you are.

Look, the mods aren't ban happy. Simple mistakes are sometimes overlooked and threads will simply be locked. You are not, let me repeat, ARE NOT helping the new members by acting this way, you are not giving newer members a good impression, you are not helping the site in any way.
People make mistakes, quit acting as though the moderators are gung-ho psychos ready to ban someone for the slightest mistake. They're not, and once again you're not helping.

Here are some helpful suggestions when you come across these weird posts, ones that are most often mistakes:
-First, check to see if someone has answered the question, or given a friendly heads up towards what is wrong.
-Second, resist the urge to post that ridiculous post about being banned you were going to post (three in one sentence, TOP SCORE!). Because guess what, that's SPAM, and can get you into trouble.
-Number C, if the post is flammatory, or SPAM, simply report and walk away.
-Number san-byakku gojuroku (not really, I'm only on like, 4 or something), Click away, change pages, leave it to the mods.

If you see an opening post that reads, "(no text)", or, "text soon"? Well, some people accidentally hit "enter" rather then "tab" after typing in the thread title. I personally just use my mouse avoid that accident. When you see these, DO NOT POST, DO NOT REPORT! Give the poster a chance to correct their mistake.
Posting "good job, banhammer" and the like, only ruins a possibly good thread. Much like we need a meaty opening post with something to discuss, we need quality first few responses. try not to kill threads before they begin.

Thanks. Have a good one.

I've always preferred the insidious and malevolent 'Report and Move on', as it implies the ban-hammer, offers your opinion and allows one to retain one's integrity.

Alright, I'm sorry *bows down in defeat*
I say this thread should be stickied, or incorporated into the rules... or something.

That's my calling card on the threads which consist of, this is a recent example, "OMG, lol, yahtzee is hilarious" and such.

That's not as egregious as messing up the punctuation.

I agree completely with the original post though; those sort of useless posts, along with the "inb4lock" themed posts/image macros need to go. They really bring this place down.

yeah, im guilty. I mostly just report now, because i've noticed it's a dick thing to do. Today I actually may of crossed a line earlier by asking what one poster was talking about, and out and out yelling at someone else. while i stand by my statements, I would like to apologise to the mods:

I'm sorry I'm sometimes a dick

Newb here, to be honest if someone is stupid enough to make a bannable post in their first... few days of being on the site, they probably are just going to be a problem down the line anyway.

As for people saying "lawlz rofl noob! BANHAMMER HAHA!", anyone with a spine won't care unless its an admin or mod, last time I checked they have grammar spelling skills, so I don't think they'd say something like that anyway.

Usually I do the same as UltraJoe and stick with Report and Move on (Unless of course someone else has said it). Although with the Yahtzee is best thread I did go a little farther than was needed. Nothing too much, but still unnecassary.

It doesnt help that Ive spent the last 4 hours watching House M.D. on DVD and drinking Captain Morgan though...

Very true. The community gets bigger every day, and it's not fair if we act like dicks in front of the new members.

I always figured that if the whole message of someone's post was nothing more that "prepare to be banned", then they should get some kind of punishment. Like probation or a temporary ban.

Pro tip: Do your original posts in Word, Notepad, or Wordpad first. Then transfer it over to the "New Topic" screen for all your formatting, and then write your thread's title in. It can't go through the system without a title, so making it the last thing you put in is a nice sort of fail-safe against half-done OPs.

sorry about off topic. just had to post it.

now back on topic. this needs to be stickied because sometimes the people on these forums can be dicks. but thankfully that's not common. with people acting like dicks it scares new people away and i'm glad i didn't make any mistakes that would have stopped me spending my day here because quite frankly i love this place.

The thing is, about 5% of the time people do the 'YOUR BANND LOLOLOL' (well, not quite that bad), the perpetrator has a change of heart. So it ain't all bad.

I usually do that for longer OPs and for shorter ones, I just make sure to copy the text I'm posting before I hit the post button in case Firefox encounters a problem.

If by insidious and malevolent you mean spamtastic. This place gets threads where the OP will obviously be banned, but below there are a torrent of "report and move on" posts because any new members surely didn't figure it out the first five time someone posted it.

"Report and move on" is essentially the escapist meme, everybody posts it but nobody follows it.

Its important to remember that the mods are the mods for a reason. They are given power for a reason and they know how to use it. Every friend who I have ever had who has modded anything (All two of them) said that people calling for banning anything. This should be a sticky because people need to remember that no matter how much they want it they are not mods.

I have only posted it in threads where there was just legions of people not applying the rule and where it has not already been said. Just because people don't listen it doesn't mean you have to not say what you think is appropriate.

Also, some people get so many people telling them they'll get banned that they're likely to get a badge for a good thread. Kinda against the point.

I agree with the "banhammer" posts do look really petty. If I do post in a thread that's been created in ignorance I'll only post explaining why it isn't clear enough, why that person has over-reacted, or what they reacted to (case in point, the "wow" thread).

Going on about the "Banhammer" is spouting an internet meme - something this forum has been wonderfully clear of, aside from this word.

I think that there needs to be an addendum addressing deja nazis; so I'll give it a go. I know it can be annoying when you feel like people keep asking the same questions and talking about the same things 10 times and on some forums not doing a search before starting a topic is a pretty obnoxious thing. However the forums where this is true are places like Elitist Jerks and other such places intended to instruct and to be a source of information.

But that's the thing people here usually aren't trying to instruct or to seek out information but rather to have a conversation and ask other people's opinions. Most philosophical debates have been restarted or reiterated at sometime and it doesn't make them less valid. I fail to see how an internet site about video games should be held to higher standards. That said I'm not without agreeing that we don't need a host of threads about zombies and what kind you would be or something similar; but it's how you remind or inform people of this that matters. You really don't need to yell at them. Like most of the posts above have said, just tell them that there are multiple similar threads already here and to do a search next time.

Lastly, and probably most importantly, you don't need to say anything. What's it to you if people are talking about the same thing?

I might add that posts like:
"nothing to see here people, report and move on"

    or

"you guys shouldn't post in this SPAM thread."

should be included in this topic.

For posting in the thread to be locked "bannzorz!" or whatever, it is an understandable net habit to acquire, I've known to do it from time to time. And I do agree I should not. But a lot of these threads are designed to stir emotion and beg a response and "enjoy the banz" is much better than "You, ******, *** you, the thing you're not getting is *uninformed over emotional response*.

Good OP though, a lesson I think we all need to take in.
