Here ye, here ye. Come one and all. The Escapist has an Art competition for you to compete in.

Time to vote. Cast yours for the finalists here!

The Idea

We here at Escapist like to think of ourselves as superior. As mentioned before, we are elitists with pancake. In jokes aside here is a chance for any of you to pit your artistic skills against each other. Whether you're a writer, a photographer or a sound engineer. Feel free to enter.

Judging goes by two rounds. The first decides the 'best' two submissions from each category listed below. This round is defined by a panel of people selected for the job. The second round is when the community as a whole goes "Oh wow, those are amazing!" then tries to pick the best three out of all the first-round winners. It's a tough job, but that's up to you, Escapists. Votes for this will be posted in a separate thread.

Remember: working in an unusual category gives you a greater chance of getting through the first round.

Prizes and winnings

I'm afraid I can't offer badges to winners, but I can say that you'll get fame and perhaps infamy within the Escapist community. Beyond that? Who can say.. there might be fans involved.

How It Works

Below are three things. A prompt, a theme and a motif. Your submitted work should be inspired by the prompt, involve or be about the theme, and feature the motif. The more original the combination of the three, the more likely it is to be appreciated. Get your lightbulbs going.

Skill at the medium you're working with is of course important. Do your best, and good luck.

Submissions must be posted as replies to this thread, and please PM me a direct link to the post as this is also a place for commenting on them and it can get a little convoluted.

Guidelines

-Nothing which is unsafe in a work environment.
-Make it original, please. Feel free to use stock images etc. but get permission from the artist and actually change them in an original fashion.
-List sources for stock and the like. A bibliography of sorts.
-It's no problem for the submission to be confronting and thought provocative however don't let it get out of hand. Tasteful stuff please.
-Your work MUST be submitted into one of the categories listed below. Choose one, and stick with it. There are no restrictions on the number of different mediums you can use, but the one you put it into should be the most prominent eg. A painting with some sections sketched in pencil is a painting rather than a drawing. It's certinally not a soundscape, if you get my drift.

Categories

-Photomanipulation
-Photography
-Computer graphics (Photoshop and MSPaint drawing, etc.)
-Sculpture

Dates

THIS COMPETITION IS CLOSED.

FAQ

Ask, and answers shall be given unto you.

I have the perfect idea..... now to use my horrible paint skills

Need an Ultrajudge? I'm not a big art maker but i reckon i could critique with the best of them.

Hrm... *ponders*
Of course, I have art for class do to, too.

I know that lighthouse!

um, so do i add top this post, or make a new one?

Make a new one.

Can I make a short story for this?

Of course. That's the Literature section. Prose, in particular.

Grr... There's always something that sparks my interest. Curse you fate, making me do what I enjoy when I feel like being lazy!

Hm... I'll prolly go for a short story.

Any length restrictions (ie. min/max. number of words)?

How much can you write in 12 days? Beyond that, go for your life. No min/max restrictions.

It's the lesser known Leaning Lighthouse of Somewhere!

Anyone know where more information about this particular lighthouse could be found? Or where the lighthouse is?

Is any form of literature accepted? Sonnets? Essays? Haikus? Novels?

Do we have to write a completely new submission, or can we use a past project?

Cool. Depending on how much frustrated crumpling and tossing aside I do, I can probably average a good few pages. We'll see, I suppose.

To the writing desk! *cue batcave transition*

Anything, yes. It doesn't matter when it was written so long as it includes the motif and theme, and can be reasonably passed off as in part inspired by the prompt.

Ok, right. I already have the first two lines for my Petrarchan in my head...

Now with the photoshop section. That would include tablet drawings I assume? I thinks I will be doing a hand-drawn.

Put me down for the Literature and Prose sections. I'm expecting a good fight, Escapists, don't let me down.

Yes.

Then my second question would be, can we submit in multiple sections?

As mentioned above. You can use multiple mediums, but only submit to one section.

Ah, I see. My skills at reading the guidelines are... lacking... at best.

Bigger question...

What about 3D art?

My artistic skills are barely moderate with pen and paper (or the equivalent), but I both sculpt and work in 3D Studio Max...

I'd call that sculpture, and feel free to put it in that section.

And what about Work In Progress images?

If only I had a mic I would write you a beautiful song, but, sadly, my mic bit the dust years ago. And it's a little hard to digitize an acoustic piano with no mic....

Would you accept a PDF or some such of sheet music?
That might be interesting. Any excuse to compose again.

Thank You

Please do so, that would be awesome. Perhaps an instrumental accompaniment?

Good stuff Laby, time to hit up Photoshop.

If you're willing to put a WIP up and call it your submission, go for it. I can't say how it'll be judged though.

I will, but I'd prefer to hear a recording because I can't actually play piano. I suspect you can download programs to give you a midi of it. Sebalius does that, as does Reason.

I might consider writing a short story, entering it into the Literature section. That is, if I can get The Automaton Speaks finished tonight.

I'll try to enter for the painting, I just finished a 12 hour art exam involving painting a 5.5" by 2.3 approx. picture of my face, some landscape would be a nice change.

Quick question;

Does my painting have to be of the lighthouse you suggested, or can it be anything related to the subject matter?

I had a day off college so I got cracking on my painting, this is a preliminary version, I think I'm gonna be changing the lighthouse and the sky, but if I don't get around to that at least I've got 1 entry submitted.

EDIT: photobucket is fucking me around, I'll fix it later.

EDIT EDIT: Fixed it

does it have to be a lighthouse in the traditional sense, or can you abstract it to something along the lines of a tower or watch tower?

This is a cheating a bit since I made this for TigSource's CMPB competition. It is a HP Lovecraft inspired game about climbing up a light house, hyped up on stimulants, while black tentacles of "unspeakable evil" try to drag you to your doom.

Here is a link to the game if you want to down load and play it:

Feel free to disqualify me for not creating this with in the contest time period, or not fitting using one of the specified of art mediums. This game just fit your contest prompt so closely I couldn't not enter it.

So if I do an arrangement of "Venus Lighthouse" from Golden Sun with the theme in mind...?
