Beat Writer Posts: 142 Joined: 21 Sep 2009 | I remember the episode you mention, it's not that bad, but I keep wondering if the whole atheist jokes are supposed to be a deliberate play on how obnoxious some atheists can be, but considering Macfarlane is one himself, I'm not sure... Could still be the case though. As for the other thing with the characters, I think it's a natural development for a long running show. I mean, just look at The Simpsons, all the characters have developed into more extreme versions of their original depictions, especially Homer and Lisa. I remember that Macfarlane said that he and the other writers just didnt think it was funny to write Stewvie as a generic evil genius anymore. |
Gone Gonzo Posts: 2263 Joined: 10 Mar 2009 | I agree. What actually finally got me off the show was when in one of the new episodes they were basically ten seconds into the show when they start playing some country singers music video for about seven minutes. Bullshit! I want to see family guy not some old coot's music! |

OT: In my opinion, Family Guy is just another example of American comedy crap. For some reason, modern comedy cannot get over the immature "hehe boobies" type of comedy that now typifies American comedic film and television. It's ridiculous, really: I long for the older style of comedy, the kind that is genuinely funny regardless of how offensive it is. |

Fixed it; I didn't get any results for Decrowning. On topic... I too no longer find it amusing. American Dad is keeping me in the McFarlane boat at the moment, but once my beloved 30% iron saint comes back to Comedy Central, I'll be back on the Groening zeppelin.
"Good job, son. Now the Japanese are normal like us." If it weren't for that one line, it would have been almost as if Seth wrote that SP episode. Then again, his writers, sorry, manatees, couldn't come up with that story in the first place. And you're also right in that South Park has become very cerebral (if you'll let it do that to you) despite its debauchery. I think the last few seasons have seen the best of this intelligence spike. |

Gone Gonzo Posts: 3205 Joined: 24 Dec 2008 | Hopefully the creators of Family Guy read the Escapists forum, (I mean huh who wouldn't?) and see the error of their ways. Unfortunatly what your going through is part of almost everything, first you start watching Family Guy with your friends and much laughs are had, you got together each week to laugh at the comic mis adventures, each week the day Family Guy is aired would come on and their would be much rejoicing amongst you and your friends. Then you go and buy the DVD for Family Guy parties, soon, your watching Family Guy during the week after work... work gets hard and stressful so you watch the DVD's after work on your own, telling yourself you'll only do it the one time... just the once! Week after week day after day, you sit on your own getting your fix, YOU CAN QUIT ANYTIME! you tell yourself. After that you find that WallMart doesn't sell the DVD Boxset on special offer anymore and your turning tricks in mens toilets to get the cash for season 6..... |

Video Producer Posts: 382 Joined: 21 Jul 2008 | Six words: Family Guy should have stayed dead. Part of what made it so damn funny in the first place was the fact that the only way to see it for a long time was on DVD. Like the early days of anime, you had to know someone who cared enough about the eclectic "lost" franchise just to see it. The internet spread it around, and like so many memes, became old within a half season of returning to broadcast television. Stewie-themed shirt designs and tireless reruns on Adult Swim are largely to blame, IMO. Then, American Dad came along. A "Family Guy Lite", in every way, sold out half the funniness of the original to reach an even wider audience. It's a case of thin-spread non sequitor, finally reaching critical mass. Like Garfield and Peanuts before it, the McFarlane franchises will fade into "old news," gratefully forgotten, but fondly remembered. |
Press Junketeer Posts: 398 Joined: 13 Sep 2009 | That's one massive post ya got there, OP. I found Family Guy not funny somewhere around 4th season, if I'm correct. You see, I needed only 3 lines to express how awful in my oppinion such series are. |

Gone Gonzo Posts: 3391 Joined: 16 May 2009 | I don't like the early episodes and think the most recent one's are funnier, so there. Its just a matter of opinion. Family Guy was never funny to me through seasons 1 and 2 (a few episodes are funny, but not many) but I find the later episodes to be the funniest. Yes, some episodes won't be funny and jokes may fall flat here and there but overall I like newer episodes. |
Muckraker Posts: 259 Joined: 2 Sep 2009 | I like family guy even now, but some of the jokes do go on way too long- like the scene where stewie goes "mom. mom. mom. hey mom. mom. mom. mom. mom [copy and paste ad nausium]" or when peter falls over and goes "ahh, fsss", or whatever that noise is. There are some absolutely hilarious parts, but from time to time you do get the impression that the show isn't as funny as it likes to think it is. Oh, and this is the review section, where you express opinions and whatnot? |
Pulitzer Laureate Posts: 974 Joined: 26 Apr 2009 | I never found Family Guy funny to begin with so meh. From what people say it seems to me the show jumped the shark around season 3 I believe. |
Gone Gonzo Posts: 1526 Joined: 26 Jul 2009 | What ave you done to your display picture, and WHY? OT: I find Futurama funnier, they do good jokes and it is better written because they can't rely on swearing. To be honest I think that it is just cool to like family guy, so people do... they make the jokes simple enough aswell, so that if you don't get the satirical subtext you can get the repetition. |
Press Junketeer Posts: 440 Joined: 9 Feb 2009 | I found Family Guy funny when it first came out. I grew up since then. Every now and then, and increasigly less frequently, they actually make a funny joke. Hell it's rare they even make a joke any more. I remember a cutaway to some random country singer in an episode a while ago. While maybe the random cutaway could be seen as funny, they kept it on this guy for an entire five minute song - in a 20 minute episode! That's just fucking slack. A lot of the jokes are "funny" because they keep it on that joke for so long as to make it funny, (e.g. Stewie's "Mom", Peter's "Fsssssst Ahh!", the Chicken Fights,) so that eventually someone may squeeze out a giggle... but really it just speaks to writers thinking "Oh God, a whole twenty minutes? No way can we fill this with actual writing, let's just do another one of those OTT jokes." Honestly though the country singer bit was the most pathetic 'cause not only did they not have to write but they didn't have to animate either. |

Paperboy Posts: 46 Joined: 28 Aug 2008 | Seasons 1-3 were gold, now it's just mildly amusing. If anything the series just got old, they've run out of ideas that would still fit the older episodes. Now the characters aren't really themselves anymore, they can be used for any gag or scene in the show and it wouldn't be out of character for them. |

(Sorry according to some people this is long, skip some paragraphs if need be.)
I remember when "Family Guy" used to be funny.
I remember watching it with my brothers, and almost peeing in my pants cause I laughed so hard.
Now a days I cannot find it funny at all.
I was watching TV in my bed, attempting to go to sleep when a more recent episode of "Family Guy" came on.
The episode was about Brian, the dog, going out with a (human) woman and withholding sex from her because he thinks that's what made his relationships fail with all his other (human) girlfriends.
The show opens with everyone at a costume party.
Peter is Laura Bush, and Lois is the "guy she killed", they explain this joke by just saying over and over "Laura Bush killed a guy." and after saying that four or five times they move on.
I just want to ask real quick. How is this supposed to be funny?
"Family Guy" has done plenty of political jokes before, but they are all really basic or explained with a reference.
"Heres two symbols of the republican party, an elephant and a big fat white guy whose threatened by change."
Thats funny; "Laura Bush killed a guy" is not.
I have never heard of Laura Bush killing anyone so I cannot find this funny
I am not sure if this is a political joke, hell I'm not even sure it is a joke.
Maybe its just a cheap shot at Laura Bush, and if so they have forums and blogs for that, you dont have to put it in your cartoon.
Anyways,
Brian is upset because he cant get into a steady relationship (with a human), maybe because heis s too intellectual, or his standards are too high, or maybe because he is a dog.
He finds a girl who is looking at a book on atheism so to strike up a conversation he pretty much says "wow your an atheist, so am I."
This is okay but I would never go up to a girl and say "wow youre a Christian, so am I." but come to think of it I have done much worse to get girls to talk to me.
They make a lot of lame jokes about how neither of them believes in God.
For example Brian says something like "I almost prayed that I would see your again, but" and they both chime in "who would hear it?"
I would just like to say that I have no problems with atheists, my own brother is an atheist, and what you believe or do not believe is your own business, but these jokes are just lame.
I half expected a funnier joke to be played on top of it like in an older episode they did, where they parodied the show "Girlfriends".
But no, those were the jokes.
Ill wrap this up soon because I got so bored with the episode that I went immediately to bed.
Ever since the show was renewed by Fox it has changed.
All the characters have changed and some of them are pretty much nonexistent.
Chris and Meg are sometimes left out entirely, and Lois has just become unlikeable and annoying.
Peter is more of a stupid jerk than the lovable simpleton he used to be.
In one episode he doesn't let Joe, the wheelchair bound police officer, come into his restaurant because the actor Mark Harmon is not disabled.
Brian who used to be the straight man for peter and Stewies antics has become the main focus of a lot of episodes, with Stewie and peter only having very small parts.
This wouldn't be bad but this is a comedy show the straight man should not be the main focus unless the funny guy is there with him the entire time.
If Bud Abbot, from "Abbot and Costello", or Brain from, "Pinky and the Brain", went solo it would not be very entertaining.
Bud Abbot would have a normal, uneventful day, and Brain would make plans for world domination by himself.
However my biggest issue is with Stewie.
Stewie was my favorite for the longest time; He was the equivalent of an infant James Bond villain.
He always was making death rays, and weather machines, to try to kill his mother, take over the world or just make sure he didn't have to eat broccoli.
Now he is just a flamboyant future homosexual who is now more of Brian's sidekick.
Every now and then he goes back to his evil ways but those are few and far between.
It wouldn't be so bad if he had started out this way, but I just liked him as an evil genius better.
For awhile I just thought it was me and I didn't like the humor anymore, but then I watched a few older episodes from season 2, and I couldn't stop laughing.
So family guy has changed, I just don't know why.
The more I watch the newer episodes, the less and less I like it.
By the way, Laura Bush killed a guy.
Funny huh.
