(4) id software vs. (13) Paradox:

id Software: How can anyone forget Quake, Wolfenstein and Doom? They continue on with Enemy Territory and mobile games for the DS, not to mention cranking out great FPS sequels to their legendary products.
Paradox: Paradox comes to us all the way from Sweden and brings with them games such as Crusader Kings and Hearts of Iron. They have also helped on multiple EverQuest 2 expansions and a plethora of other AAA game titles.

Way to many people overlook Hearts of Iron, besides, swedish developers need all the help they can get!

id all the way. If only based upon the fact that they pretty much created an entire genre and really helped refine and drive that genre in the early days.

id.

Their earlier stuff built my great appreciation of FPS games. Then their recent stuff helped me understand how easily you can bork up an FPS game design. Hopefully they'll hire some good designers to build something with that fancy new procedural detail engine thingy they've been developing, and not just "throw artists at it".

ID built the foundation for modern gaming. The first series of games were great, Quake 4 was a very good game as is Quake Wars. Too bad Doom 3 did not live up to expectations. The only company that trumps ID is valve.

Paradox. You have Hearts of Iron, the only truly strategic WW2 game I have ever seen. You have EU3, which brought their fine brand of strategic gameplay to the modern graphical standard and is addictive as all out. Crusader Kings. These are the most detailed, best strategy games ever. It saddens me they must go up against id and be crushed in the first round. They deserve better.
