INT. UPPER LEVEL OF THE SPIRE

In a spacious laboratory inside the spire, part of the accommodation reserved for the RAK Mobile Intelligence Collective, the RAK Avatar, in his white laboratory coat, sat at his desk, investigating several robotic components while compiling reports. A NinjOS unit stood in one of the corners of the laboratory, watching silently as the Avatar continued his work. Unexpectedly, the large entry door opened, slowly revealing the gigantic RAK Mobile Autonomous Intelligence. The Intelligence moved into the centre of the room, a whirring emanating from its electric motors. As the Avatar looked up, the Intelligence began to speak in a discordant low-pitched voice.

INTELLIGENCE: NinjOS has reported an increasing amount of human resistance on the streets, with a large number of its own units destroyed by the rebels. Investigation from the drone units confirms that the humans are becoming more... defiant.

AVATAR: What's new? The rest of the humans have been insubordinate since the very beginning. I find it difficult to understand why this is any different.

INTELLIGENCE: It is different, Avatar, because this time, they are amassing leadership and organisation. The Intelligence recalls that you were once involved with this group - a group called the Escapists.

Suddenly, on hearing the name of the rebel group, while the mechanical half of the Avatar's face barely moved, the biological half dropped into a look of reflection.

AVATAR: The Escapists... perhaps this will be a greater problem than I had foreseen. But there's nothing we can do without proper intel, right? Do another sweep or two with the recon drones, make out your report to NinjOS, then we'll decide together where to mobilise the combat units.

INTELLIGENCE: Understood, Avatar. The Intelligence hopes that you have something to occupy you in the interim, for it will take a few hours for the reconnaissance sweep to be completed.

As the Intelligence moved over to its docking station on the edge of the room, the Avatar stood up, walking over to one of the windows. He peered out onto the desolated streets, now in the possession of the knowledge that an organised group sought to take the Spire. It was an unlikely scenario, he reasoned, but an unfavourable one. He looked back at the Intelligence, which was processing the information of thousands of reconnaissance drones, and was reminded of the researchers which he had worked with on the MAI project. Most of them were dead, and those which were still alive had lost their minds as their Intelligence units were destroyed, and were now locked up securely by NinjOS for fear that in their insane rambling, they would reveal classified secrets.

As he turned his head towards the streets once more, he remembered an attack on a heavily-armoured military complex that he had done with his second-in-command, Angela May, and the horrifying sight as a rocket blasted its way through the eye of her Intelligence, leading her to shriek with fury and pain, driving her to instant insanity. As these memories bubbled to the surface, he vowed revenge on the humans in the streets and vowed that he would make them suffer, as they had done to Angela and the rest of the researchers.

Ext. Alley
Sam moved low across the street to the alley where Necroswanson was.
The pavement scratched his belly uncomfortably and he stopped for a second to fix his shirt.
"Come on you piece of deadweight!" Necroswanson hissed as angrily as he could at a whisper.
Sam moved as fast as he could into the alley where Necroswanson was and then took cover behind a dumpster and waited for Dr. Rain.

EXT. Street

Rain fell to the ground at the signal of the man before crawling his way across the street. Reaching the other side he huddled against the wall flat.

"Maybe going this slow isn't what I had in mind. Do robots have heat sensors? Or just motion?"
He asked not knowing if he'll even get an answer. The robots were shrouded in secret. After the fall of man, that spire had created its own constructs of machines and what not.

Peter didn't really like the words 'run'. They signified too much danger for his own good. He just hoped they were getting somewhere out of all this.

EXT. DUSTY STREET, SHADOWS DANCING AND DIVERTING THE EYES

MCU stood, scanning the area. His heat senors were completely shot, taken out by one overzealous human with a penchant for jamming crude weaponry where it doesn't belong. A knife blade was still lodged in his shoulder joint, completing a circuit that it itself severed. It slowed down his right arm's process by a factor of 2.43 x 10^-3 percent. Minimal enough to be ignored, but still noted. The hilt had been severed off and left for the sweeper drones to find. His motion sensors were still online, although at half-sensitivity with the clouded sky staggering the shadows in The Spire's glowing red.

His normal optical sensors were the only fully-functional "vision" scanners, and he paused to take in information. There could've been something moving, or it could've been a flicker of the shadow. Percentages were unclear, resting at 47% and 53%. It wasn't enough to make a decision on, so he waited. If anything, humans had to move before robots did.

MCU Aural Interface Unit - Setting: Human Child
Hello? Is anyone there? I'm so lost here... Can someone please help me?

The shadows danced, and MCU stood inhumanly still, taking in the motions. He had already found a pattern in the shadows, predictable enough to estimate their moves. Humans rarely fit with these, and the sympathetic ones will often jump at the sound of a human child asking for assistance. His rifle was already at the ready, and he stood silent. Red dominated the landscape, and he waited for something other than the shadows to jump.

INT. UPPER LEVEL SPIRE HALLWAY - R.A.K. CORRIDOR

Butler knew his job. He paced deliberately toward the Control Room for the Intelligence. Unlike Operations Prime, Butler didn't trust the Avatar. An unknown variable, and one so close to the headquarters. Humans were brash, emotional, and Butler knew that these were elements for disaster. Unlike the other non-BrainChip slaves, the Avatar did not have any restrictions. Butler could not harm, nor affect, the Avatar in any way, or face simple and demanding punishments. Butler was not run on advanced protocols. Butler still ran on, in fact, the BETA of the original NinjOperating System. His Pro/Con Decisionsoft still accepted human errors as likely, and he knows his robot brothers are not weak to the same errors.

Regardless of whatever distaste, or processing equivalent, he held for the Avatar, he must follow his orders. He opened the door to the Intelligence, and regarded the absent-looking Avatar from across the room. The Avatar stood reflecting from the window, rage dancing in his eyes.

Butler stood waiting, dreading the impossibly long seconds it took for humans to process and respond to data.

Suddenly, an alarm sounded inside the tank- one of the proximity sensors had been triggered. Vickers scrambled out of the tank hatch and pulled back the bolt on the 50. Calibre machine gun mounted on the turret. He saw a dark figure approaching in the gloom.

INT. UPPER LEVEL SPIRE - RAK LABORATORY

As the Avatar was shaken from his reflective state, he turned to the Butler, considering the question he had just been asked.

AVATAR: I'd prefer the intelligence in dictated form, if you wouldn't mind.

EXT. STREET

The reconnaissance drone, one of thousands controlled by the Intelligence, moved through the drainpipe on its stubby mechanical legs. Constantly sending a visual feed to its controller, the drone moved its eyestalks around in order to obtain a full rotational view of its surroundings.

It stopped as it detected erratic movement. Switching to heat sensors, it detected the unmistakable signature of a biological lifeform. Moving more slowly, the drone crept up towards the figures, attempting to get within aural range. There were three of them altogether, bipedal... humans.

Suddenly, one of the humans made a sound. The Intelligence, processing the signal from the Spire, recognised it as a sign of attention. The drone had been heard, and the Intelligence commanded it to move before it was discovered entirely.

Int. Gremlin's lab.

Gremlin frowned, and selected a small pistol. Slipping it under his jacket he turned and left the lab, re-engaging all the security locks as he did so, muttering "better go have a look outside, see what's going on". He left the lab exactly as it had been.

Ext. Alley

He stepped out, scanning the area. No-one. He paused a moment, listening for anything interesting. There was a slight clanging coming from the building opposite, which he dismissed. Bots in the pipes, they were all over the place. He had no doubt that if NinjOS wanted him in he'd be there already. It was a risk he quite happily took.

Deciding to go left, he set off at a casual stroll, the weight of the pistol reassuring at his side. "Time to find where the trouble's at" he murmured.

EXT. Street

Andrew had lost the people he'd been trailing, he'd missed one of the steps in their movements and had no idea where they were. It was a bit tedious really. He sighed and stretched himself out. He was a bit tired, truth be told. Hungry too, not urgently hungry, but he felt a slightly emptiness in his stomach would could impede his actions if left alone. Dusting off the arms of his coat, he strolled down the street calmly. He had no real reason to fear robot intervention, he hadn't done anything yet. As far as they knew he was merely a teacher on his way to a house for home schooling.

Admittedly he was at a bit of a loss as to where he was going. Oh, he knew the area well enough, having memorised most of the streets on his first few treks along and through them, but he was wandering aimlessly now. An investigation if NinjOS was what he wanted, but it was nigh-impossible for any human to reach the top room alive and uninvited. He had considered turning himself in for robotic prosthetics as a method of helping him in, but the idea of a brain-chip which read his thoughts was something he wasn't terribly fond of. Prosthetics would put him in NinjOS' control as well, meaning he wouldn't be able to resist even if he decided he wanted to.

Andrew stopped at an old boarded up store, the faded and dusty sign above the covered window area reading "Wi lia s re n Gro er". Evidently some letters had faded and dropped away after it had closed down. The door however, as he tried it on a whim, was not locked. The knob was a tad resistant due to rust, but with a bit of effort he managed to turn it and push the door open.

INT. Old Greengrocer's Store

The room was dusty but otherwise well preserved, with a few aisles of low tables where the greengrocer's produce evidently went. Thin beams of light shot into the room through holes in the boards at the window. An old cash register stood on a counter, a chair just out of initial sight behind it. The light offered by the open door and the thin beams gave the room a twilight feel, the dust shimmering somewhat under the sun. He hopped the counter and poked around at the papers that were stored in a few draws that had been attached, presumably be the owner. The ruffling of the sheets was incredibly loud against the silence that the room offered. He came to a piece of paper at the bottom, blue with black ink adorning it in a neat cursive script.

William,
After having some time to think about...us,
I have made a decision. You obviously don't
want to see our child be born or have it
grow up, you've made that much clear. It...
saddens me to do this, truly, but I think
it best if we don't see each other anymore.
You weren't the man I thought you were, and
I'm sorry. Don't look for me.
-Sara.

Andrew replaced the paper in the draw and shut it quietly before falling back into the chair. An incredible puff of dust came up and Andrew sneezed violently, the sound echoing throughout the shop and out into the street. He still wasn't really sure what he was doing.

INT. R.A.K. CONSOLE ROOM - MID TO LATE AFTERNOON

Butler made notice of the selection, and summoned a drone to do the updating. His distrust for the human would hamper the report, which is something he is incapable of doing according to his programming. The drone began down the hall, and began a long, complicated oral report of the robots' combined reports. The report briefly listed a short casualty report, and where the heaviest losses were incurred, and segued into the known members of the resistance killed or injured. The report continued, listing sighting of humans reported without further message and contact disconnects from damaged units.

The report also detailed foreign-made robots within the city, likely MCU that had gone AWOL and disconnected their own wireless signals had made them. The report concluded in saying that all combat structures within The Spire are handled, and any and all RAK support would be best served on the streets. The drone thanked them, and left into the corridor with Butler. That job was done, thankfully. Butler tired of speaking to the meatsack...

EXT. SEEMINGLY ABANDONED STREET - NEARBY A LOCAL GROCERS

MCU's sound sensors picked up a sneeze from the building immediately to his right. He turned, training his gun on the entrance. Pacing slowly, motion sensors angled behind him at 75% sensitivity covered his flank while he moved into the store, which looked like an old, abandoned building. The gun's barrel illuminated, and the flashlight trailed along the wall until it came in contact with a human. The gun hit shoulder level, and sat perfectly still on the human's chest.

MCU
Good evening, citizen. NinjOS Unit MC-74-X, may I see your I.D. please?

MCU scanned the human's facial structure and demeanor. Nothing came up on the initial sweep, but he would need a minute to receive a full report from The Spire, which would only come after scanning his ID. Tension was thready as he waited for the human to respond.

INT. Grocer's Store

The robot burst into the room slightly startling Andrew before demanding to see his identification.
"Good afternoon to you MC-74-X, nice weather we're having isn't it? My I.D. is right here." Andrew produced a small card with his name, occupation, age and other such details on it alongside a small picture. It was a few years old now, he'd not bothered getting it replaced with an up to date picture, but he still beared an all too passing resemblance nevertheless. He was perhaps a tad more gaunt and less well shaven, but he still had a youthful glimmer in his eye and a foolish smile plastered across his face.
"I was on my way to see a client for a lesson, however I felt a wave of nausea pass over me and decided to take a momentary rest in here. The door was unlocked. I was actually about to leave when you stepped in."

He smiled again. No reason for the robot to suspect anything further than his words. Unless there was an error in the system, which was doubtful from everything he'd garnered over the long months, MC-74-X should be sending him on his way. He tried to not to show too much eagerness. A lot of people held the robots in contempt and he should probably react accordingly, nevertheless if he was earnest about his innocence in being here, the robot may take that into account. Did robots understand eagerness and being earnest? He wasn't quite sure. Perhaps he should ask 74-X if, hopefully when, Andrew was cleared.

INT - Ruined Research and robotics Lab

As the grinds of the spanner against the gears subsided, as Dr. Germenbaug finally finished his latest attachment, a horrible ensemble attached to his legs. He tested them briefly, before proceeding to the wooden door, halfway off it's hinges. The attachments receded into his tarnished frame and he proceeded to walk out onto the street.

EXT - Ruined Research Lab

The ominous Spire hung in the sky in front of him, a gray sky above a heartwarming reminder to who controls this world. Below, on the streets, wreckage and carnage were a sad reminder of the pitiful human resistance. Maybe, just maybe, if they could mount a serious offense , he would consider aiding them all... like he aided himself.

He crept down the sidewalk, his metallic feet clinking on the pavement with every other step.

INT. ABANDONED GROCERS

MCU processed the ID. His initial check proved just as useful as his latter check, nothing came up on the human. MCU returned the card and holstered his weapon. Pro/ConSoft decided that asking the human, notably less antagonistic than the other humans, would serve useful. If this one was half as nice as he seems, he would likely aid in stopping the resistance. A mutually beneficial arrangement, considering the robots could allow the local shops and city at large to re-open and resume business. The reason for the dystopia was a result of the resistance, truly, not the robots. Should things have gone passively, the robots would simply be in charge of government.

MCU
Thank you, citizen Pearce. Would you perhaps know the where-abouts of a known Resistance group in the area? As an aggressor to civilization as we know it, it would mutually benefit all parties if the resistance were to stop. All positive tips go toward a reward of monetary compensation, an increase of allotted rations, and protection from the aggressors of the Robot Utopia. Any information would help greatly.

MCU suspected it was NinjOP's love for his creator, long-since dead, and the humans he harbors and trusts safely that leads him to not obliterate those which had ultimately created him. Perhaps even a sense of friendship, or whatever equivalent NinjOS Prime may or may not have. MCU spent the silence awaiting the human's natural slower processing speed and response time to contemplate the mystery that was the grand goal of NinjOP, and consider the future should the Resistance fall. As a soldier and peacekeeper, would MCU himself be obsolete?

INT. Grocer's Store

Over a dozen questions flowered into Andrew's mind when 74-X asked for assistance and mentioned it as 'mutually beneficial'. It would appear that his time to choose sides had come far sooner than he had anticipated. Did the robot have sensors to assist in lie detection? If he sent the robot in the right direction and they found nothing, would he be punished for feeding misleading information, and therefore perhaps be seen as a co-conspirator with the Resistance? There had been those few interesting people he'd spotted near the church, but he hadn't seen them since then. Though his mind raced through these numerous questions, only a few seconds passed before he answered.

"I spotted two or three figures which seemed suspicous near an old church. I kept an eye on them for a short while as they headed South from the church building however they managed to slip away. Whether they were aware of my tracking I couldn't tell you, however these people may be the Resistance group you seek."

And there it was, he'd made his choice in siding with the Robots. For now, at least. If what 74-X said was true and that it would be mutually beneficial for both humans and robots if the Resistance were stopped, it'd be his, nay, humanity's best option. His mind skipped back to his younger brother, barely breaking out of his teenage years, so enthusiastic to join the Resistance to fight the "Robot Menace." It looked like one more thing he and his brother would fight about.

"If that is all you require MC-74-X, I must be going. My client is waiting for my teaching skills and I would hate to keep them waiting. Do not hesitate to call on me again however if you believe I can be of assistance." And this was where he and his brother differed. Andrew knew that the system would be better improved from the inside through mutual cooperation. The Resistance was just that, a resistance. A small one at that, something which, if tracked down, could be removed by the technologically superior robots. Still, Andrew had to be wary. His was still an allegiance of convenience in seeking the most stable and safe environment for his family to grow in, if the robots showed that they would provide a worse living environment than the Resistance would, he may be forced to switch sides. However for the moment, he was backing NinjOS.

INT. ABANDONED GROCER'S

MCU thanked the man, dismissed him, and returned to the street. It was comforting to know his calculations were largely correct. The shorter these trials became, the easier his job would be. He unholstered his carbine, accelerated out of the door toward the church, motion sensors increased to 100% efficiency. If anything moved, he wanted to know about it. The street was inviting, the air was calm, and MCU was prepared for a battle.

"Halt! Who goes there!"

The man thought on this, how could he answer if he didn't know himself?*
And how could he not answer without getting riddled with bullets?
The answer came as he slowly moved closer, the gun was broken!
Damaged by the sandstorm earlier, how he knew this was a mystery to him.
Vickers probably didn't know this, would telling him show he was trustworthey?
Or would it make him sound threatening?

"My name has escaped me for the time being, but I know you are Dorian Vickers, one of the few soldiers that escaped the robot purge of warriors, all you need to know is that last time I checked I was human, I currently have no reason to attempt to harm you and I need your help.
If you don't see fit to trust me then so be it.

INT. UPPER LEVEL SPIRE - RAK LABORATORY

Tthe Avatar had sat back down, turning his attention back to the robotic components on the table. It had been an hour since the Butler had left the room, and he had briefly considered the information he had been given - the Intelligence Collective's combat units, with their heavy armour and their automatic firearms, would be best suited to the streets anyway. However, he would have to wait for the Intelligence to finish its reconnaissance before they decided on the mobilisation of the combat units.

As the Avatar continued to work at his report, he thought of NinjOS Operations Prime, and remembered the first time he had witnessed it. He had been awed, and frankly, even for somebody used to working with intelligent machines, somewhat frightened. However, it had soon transpired that NinjOP's aims were compatible with those of the Intelligence Collective, and they had soon formed an alliance. A robotic utopia was within their reach, but the resistance in their desperation to cling to the past, rejected their proposals.

Suddenly, the Intelligence began to speak, breaking the Avatar's train of thought.

INTELLIGENCE: The reconnaissance sweep is complete, Avatar. The Intelligence notes that there was one particular account of human activity which may prove quite... interesting.

The Avatar stood up, walking over to the Intelligence which was preparing its cybernetic link equipment. Standing in front of the Intelligence, the Avatar pulled the helmet-like piece of equipment over his head, and instantly began to stand upright, eyes dilated as the Intelligence fed information into his brain. After a few seconds, the Avatar relaxed as he began to consider the reconnaissance information that he had just received.

AVATAR: You're right. This is interesting. What about those three humans? What happened with them?

INTELLIGENCE: They detected the sounds of the drone. The Intelligence reasoned that it was impossible to catch them - the combat units would have taken at least twenty minutes to mobilise, at which time, they would have escaped in any case. They were almost undoubtedly rebels, however - elementary analysis of their speech patterns indicates this.

AVATAR: Understood. If we find them again, we'll have them reassigned to slave labour. And do you understand what the situation is now?

INTELLIGENCE: Indeed, Avatar. We will begin mobilising the combat units, but first we must decide where we will mobilise them. The Intelligence suggests that mobilise them at the points of heaviest rebel concentration, beginning with a few platoons. Do you concur, Avatar?

AVATAR: That sounds reasonable. The combat units will march the streets, and we shall halt these rebels in their tracks!

INT. RAK COMBAT UNIT STORAGE FACILITY - 2 MILES SOUTH OF THE SPIRE

Inside the dark hallways of the storage facility, row after row of heavily armoured RAK Military Attack Robots (MARs) lay in wait for activation. As the Intelligence sent out its activation signal, the front line of MAR units began to move, their hands flexing around their submachine gun armaments. The look on their faces was engineered to look aggressive, but at this particular point in time, it accurately portrayed their collective state of mind - they had a directive of malice against the rebels which maintained their resistance against their clear superiors. With two lines joining together with military precision, the robots marched out of the facility, the heavy sound of metal on concrete filling the air around them.

EXT. EMPTY STREET - JUST NORTH OF THE CHURCH

MCU's Pro/ConSoft immediately halted his movement. The destruction of the rebels landed a priority of 9 out of 10, which meant whatever stimuli ceased his was a full 10, the only one in MCU's memory was that of a complete Combat Unit recall. He immediately heeded the Soft, planting his feet and establishing a perimeter around himself using all of his available sensors. Nothing could move within 100 feet without him knowing it, a feat which required absolute stillness within the field. The software updated him, informing him to upload his frequency to a list of allied units. His frequency and call numbers were transmitted, added to the list, and confirmed. The list grew several thousand strong in very few seconds. The top of the list was the reason for the all-call.

RAK Military Units, MARs, had joined the patrols on the streets. Boasting a huge displacement, power-to-weight ratio, firepower, efficiency, and armor class capability far more advanced than his own, Pro/ConSoft adjusted the combat calculations, and ranked the rebels a paltry 57% chance of victory, assuming they were as heavily armed as The Spire. Highly unlikely, at an estimated 3% chance, but still possible, so taken into calculations. MCU felt the average chance of human victory in any given battle was 17% based on his previous encounters, and much more accurate and to-scale. The chance of total victory per 10 battles was 1.73%, factoring that the robots outnumbered the total human census 15 to 1, the humans were very outmatched.

MCU primed himself for combat, and went into energy saving stasis. Should anything breach his field, it would be fired upon in a matter of nanoseconds, but lucky, it appeared from the outside that MCU was deactivated. Now, it was a matter of waiting until an MAR squad appeared. The humans, mathematically speaking, were doomed.

EXT. Street
Sam followed the lead of the others and dropped to hist stomach in the alley, once again wondering just what the Necroswanson saw that was such a large obstacle to their group.

It didn't matter to Sam though, as long as he wasn't arrested or killed he was fine with whatever happened to them.

Following Peter's lead, Sam drew his pistol and held it in his right hand, waiting to see what happened next.

EXT. STREET

MAR-1136, one of six of the MAR units in its squad, continued to march in formation with the rest of its squad. Its directives were clear - immediate mobilisation to the last known position of a group of rebels. The metallic sounds of the squad's footprints echoed through the empty streets.

Unexpectedly, a message came up on the internal head-up display of MAR-1136:

"Directive Note: Do not kill any suspected or confirmed rebels."

MAR-1136 was perplexed. Why would they not kill the rebels? The MAR units had been designed to kill, and to do it efficiently. The robot immediately sent a message back to the Intelligence, "Directive note received but not understood. Clarify statement."

Almost immediately, it received the message, "Rebels are to be captured for interrogation and reassignment."

Suddenly, MAR-1136 understood. Interrogation could lead the MARs to more rebel outposts, where they could be used for their proper purpose. Another robot in the squad, MAR-1134, expressed another valid point:

MAR-1134: The Intelligence ordered us not to kill. It noted nothing about leaving them in a state just over the threshold required for interrogation...

EXT. Tank in Desert

The man smirked as Vickers abandoned the machine gun in favor of his side-arm, that one worked for sure but the man was not fearful.
Vickers was not a twitchy shooter, he couldn't afford to waste the bullets as he hadn't been on a supply raid for a while.

"The last raid you went on, you were a little careless.
I saw you, and I wasn't the only one. I gather you've been attacked since and had to move further away from the city?
And that's made it quite risky to go for a little foray, but I have brought gifts of goodwill from my time in the old scrapheap before it was ''reclaimed'' yesterday.

Just some basic Med supplies, some Ammo and most importantly...
Food and water.
Now if we could discuss the rest in that nice roomy tank of yours, by now your instruments must have me showing as unarmed, remember the old idiom 'The Walls Have Ears'?
Well; The Sands Have Audio receptors.
