Well, I'm still new here, so I'm not exactly sure on how well the RP is here. This thread basically says that the GMs aren't really committed to their game, which I hope I can be. I've done roleplays before, and I'm usually committed to my game, but it usually seems that my players aren't. :/

Zemalac:
Splitting the Forum Games and RPs into two subsections would be a good idea, methinks. Beyond that everything seems to be working fairly well.

Yeah, that would help separate the serious and the non-serious stuff. And that way, we don't have to put "RP" somewhere in the title, and put that the thread is a serious-roleplay blah blah blah.

What might be good is a sort of "GM Toolkit." Have a panel of tools the GM can use, like the trailer post and the broadcast to players and all the other stuff that has been suggested. That way if you think up a new tool you can just add it to the toolkit. It might take some time to set up and work out all the details, but once it is set up it would be easy to modify.

Does that make any sense?

I understand. On another forum, you could delete posts in your own RP thread, in case of griefers and OOC/offtopic stuff in a non-OOC thread (I liked to separate the two, so the flow didn't break).

Also, what is "trench-coating"? Never heard of that term before.

I ave seen it a few times, I am really not sure what it means. i have figured out Ooc and other terms, but not that one.

My character is badass. He has no past, no last name. His first name is 'Bloodrazor'. He weilds a Katana like a practiced legend and wears a trenchcoat. He's deep, dark nad mysterious because I say he is and he speaks in awesome one liners...

That's a trenchcoat, a character that has no depth, and tries to use 'Mystery' to excuse his lack of development. Unstoppable in combat, surly and silent. Assholes.

Basically, layering on cliche and 'awesome' to try and excuse horrible writing and a lack of character. Avoid it.

OHOHO I LOVE WHEN SOMEONE TRENCH-COATS! I like to link the thread to my friends through MSN and laugh maniacally at them. In my old forum, I think we called that "Sephiroth-ing".

Hrm, if those MSN friends would get online, I could base my RP here. I'm beginning to like this community's RP section. :P

Bonus points for your correctness. The guy who changed my name way back when might not have been aware of this fact, but I do enjoy the touch of irony that goes along with my name.

The only real thing I can think of is putting little avatars of you're player under your regular avatar. Just so people have an idea of who you are and what you do. Plus, words can only describe so many things, and some people (me) can't explain what they really mean.

You made this thread so I could get my hopes up. Nevermind that you warned me!

As has been said before, splitting the forum games and serious roleplay sections would make everything alot easier. Also, despite the fact that it is in the spoiler tags, the OOC chat still disrupts the flow of the RP itself, so making a whole new OOC section would help to take care of that. As for the lack of player and DM commitment, there's nothing anybody can really do to help with that. If a player is inactive, then they can be kicked, and the title can be editted saying that there is an opening and new characters will be accepted. Reserves also help with that. But if the DM quits on the RP, well there's nothing you can really do about that. Granted, I haven't really been here that long (I'm one of Tiki's aforementioned MSN Buddies and came for his roleplay), so I'm not sure on the details. I could be completely wrong for reasons that I don't really know.

I don't think anything is happening. Spin told us he was working on this 2 months ago and we haven't heard an update, so I don't know if he never presented these ideas, or if they were just shot down. Spin never said anything.

EDIT: Wilson said in IRC that they're working on it but changes will take a very long time to be put in effect.

Hi Peeps!

I apologize for my tardiness on this thread, I was not ignoring anyone at all but I wanted to update you with what I could. We have some implementations and possible changes coming up on The Escapist in the near future that may make some of the awesome ideas you have available, so I appreciate your patience.

For those items not covered, Kuliani and I are going to start trying to put together the rest. I don't mean to be cryptic but unfortunately there are some really great things we are working on that I just can't let out of the bag just yet. Just know that I LOVE these types of RPs and I'm going to do whatever I can to make this forum even more amazing.

Best,

Something tells me you were a DM at one point. Cryptic suggestions and implications?

I love it. It's another quest for the great Emu to solve.

Actually, I did used to GM/DM a RIFTS campaign that went on for quite some time and I'm developing my own table-top based on The Dark Tower Series by Stephen King. I also used to mod/DM on a RP chat forum much like this when they first started getting popular about 13 years ago. Damn...I'm getting old!

Here it's the opposite: I still find it weird whenever anyone talks about stuff that happened on the internet prior to this decade. I'm too young to even remember what the internet was like before 4chan! :P

Dice rolling would help make things a bit more fair and apparent I think. Might get me a bit more interested. It'd also be cool if we could get a setup for online DnD and other setups going, fairly steadily.

Seconded!

I'm placated, teased, angered and aroused by your blend of torment-ish foreshadowing and much appreciated lettin gme know i'm not twitching like a spider freebasing sugar for no reason. In short, I feel loved... but it's annoying older relative love where they dangle goodies above my short-as-gnomes childness. Appreciated, though.

Cut the childness, i'm just short as a damn gnome period.

IMO, we need a GMing Tool and the ability to Delete posts. Also, please seperate forum games, and The RP's.

I think we need some sort of quality control. There has been a massive influx of half-baked RPs that are driving the good ones off the front page.

Yes, tons of half-assed RPs have been made lately, I can think of 5 that I have joined that were either done right off the start, or within a week.

There are a few good ones floating around, they just tend to be posted in much less frequently and so they live on pages 3 or 4. We have novel-length, novel-quality RP's around, they just tend to be the whales in this thrashing sea of tuna. Surfacing rarely, but they're the ones you wait hours afloat to catch a glimpse of.

I don't think we need quality control, but a way to 'favorite' threads like those would be great. Informing subscribers of new posts, GM updates and the aformentioned 'play-casts' (now named playcasts). Some people do enjoy the one-lined RP's, but if we had a way to keep tabs on the leviathans, it wouldn't annoy the more involved RP'ers as much. They could conduct their RP's from their subsription list rather than the RP forum, and never see the 2 solid pages of... stuff.

If it helps, i'm looking for devoted RP crafters to PM me. I'm revamping one of my old Rp's with some re-written rules and could use a brains trust to help me churn it out. A quick warning; This is work, and it's not the place for half-assed efforts. If you can't give your best regularly, and your best is lacking because you can't put in effort, then please stay in the shallows. If it works, we'll have a whale on our hands, if not then we'll have 4 weeks of panic watching it drown... So don't let it drown.

There is the bookmark ability which is essentially what you are asking for. It doesn't keep tabs per say but it does keep the thread at the top of the page so you can always find it and see when someone has made a new post. It's very helpful and I recommend for everyone to use it when taking part in a role play.

I was more thinking a little box in your profile that could contain links to the thread, ect. And face it, you love the idea of turning RP's into super high-tech awesomesauce. Awesomesauce

That does sound awesomesauce but also sounds very unlikely. It doesn't make sense to include this rather complex feature for a small part of the forums.

What might be neat is a 'favourite threads' box that everyone can view from your profile page. You can put whatever threads you want in that box, including any RPs you may be playing.

What would be nice is maybe a "Join my RP!" thread that is stickied. Give some info for your RP, Character specifications, and a link. The active ones and/or the ones with spots open could be put on the OP.

I think that a basic explanations thread is required: one that shows the newbies (like myself) the ropes with definitions of abbreviations that are commonly used, practices to avoid when RPing, yadda yadda yadda. You know what I mean.

Yes, a much expanded one. That thread seems to assume that you're already pretty informed about RPs... Sure, it lays down the law, but explains not the letter of it. It's got guidelines, but I don't need guidelines: I need INFO.

The thread doesn't even say what a RP is. It also doesn't explain the term OOC. My point being, there are a lot of questions the new people will have that could be answered fairly easy by expanding the thread (this is also evidenced by the trench-coat question from above).

All I'm asking for are definitions of commonly used terms, a general explanation of what a RP is and how one can work, and advice for beginners who have no idea what the hey is going on :D

Wish I could advertise myself somehow... but since I can not, you are right. I have been planning on making such a thread together with some of my fellow role-players, since I know it would be of use. I say "planning", since I haven't had quite enough time, but this does give me even more motivation.

Maybe I'll work on a thread for it, but I'd need someone to sticky it or else it wouldn't be found immediately. Does this board have moderators, or just admins? There's no apparent member's list, so I can't tell. All I see are admins.

Yellow names are mods, you can send messages to anybody with a yellow name, wether regarding a locking of a thread, reporting someone, whatever.

Those are two that I know are mods, there are more.
