Anachronism:
Profoundly pedantic complaint here, and it's not even strictly a bug. The description attached to the "Unconquerable" badge is misspelled. It currently says "vini, vidi, vici", when it should be "veni, vidi, vici".

Apologies, but I study Latin, so that sort of thing really irks me.

Heh, figured I couldn't be the only one that had noticed. I beat you to it, though!

Err, I'm not quite sure this is the correct thread to report this in... But it's about a genre wars badge, so I guess so. You've misspelled the description of the "Unconquerable" badge. It says "Vini, vidi, vici". Should be "Veni, vidi, vici".

I keep losing, I'd like to consider that a bug. :P

so do i. like i had the same units (not exactly the same, they were a different faction) but i had more. and i stuck to the rules of 'this is better against this' and he won. how does that work?

this is like an ultimate version of rock paper scissors. this is better than that, but that is better than that one over there, but that one over there is better than this. the circle continues.

Once again ye olde "not logged in to GW" although I am logged in to the escapist. Add to that that I apparently can't log in anyway to GW when typing my login and password... It is becomming quite frustrating.

Not only am I unable to issue a challenge due to the "not logged on to Genre Wars" issue, but whenever I get challenged I get no option to accept or not, no matter how many times I refresh the page. It is very annoying.

I've had a few issues with challenging people only to go to their status page; I know they didn't return to base because when I go back to my command page it still shows the potential opponent as being on the field.

Also, I'm having some issues closing the pop-up announcement box thing; I have to click the X about 10 times for it to go down. (Firefox 3 on OS X 10.5, if that helps)

I have over 60 wins and only in 2 of those wins did i lose a complete army so i need my majestic badge. I have over 100 matches played but i have not got my genre wars veteran badge yet. I annhilalated a genre wars noob who lost everything but i didn't get my terminator badge. So could some one please send them to me

i have a new computer with 2 high end graphics cards and 4gigs of RAM it can run several games at once on one of its 4 screens. but genre wars wont start up i click on command and it only shows the very top of the genre wars screen.
Edit: then i got to a crappy computer at my school that hasn't been updated for like 10 years and it runs. granted i can't read like half the stuff it displays but i know the general layout from watching my friends play.

I have hit the 550K mark, and now I can't find any more matches. I am limited to sitting and waiting in the Warzone for someone else to challenge me.

So, I still don't see anything under the "command" menu, even though my army is supposedly in the "war zone". I wanna play, but there's nothing to play! :(

I've been like this for a week, but only when I'm at home. When I'm on campus, everything works fine...

Same internet browser (Firefox 3.0.8)
Same updates (Java 6 Update 13, Adobe Flash Player 10, if it matters)
Same OS (Microsoft XP Media Center Edition)
Checked my cookies, cleared my cache, and there's still nothing on that one tab...

I know you guys are trying your hardest to make this game fun, which it is...but it's difficult to have fun with something if you can't get access to the main part of the game over half the time...

What browser are you using? When you clicked the checkbox did the popup disappear or stay visible to you?

When you are in the warzone under scout enemies you should see a list of armies ready to attack.

Also as a side note the ability to see weaker armies in the warzone is back. For details check out the announcement thread: http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/376.107238

yep... the only flaw in the game

Shadowlolz killed 58 troops including eliminating a entire unit
L_Lawliet killed 74 troops and not eliminating any units.

Wins are based on casualty count with a bonus to units eliminated. It is not based on cash, because I could stack 50 peons against a few Epic and get lucky with a win.

Example:
50 Solider Droids = 7250
50 Scout Droids = 7500
vs
3 Battle Mechs = 8745

Both sets of droids while being deplorable in offense get a bonus to attack roll against the mechs because charges & stalkers are strong against shooters.

Now the luck of the dice is going to kick in when you have 100 versus 3. The 3 mechs are going to do more damage in unit count than they droids are, but the chances of the droids doing more cash damage is high.

If you make it back to the base with no units and a few extra dollars, I don't see how you can say you won?

While you have cash on hand your net winnings are not that high. Almost to the point a badge.

I can't enter the Command section. When I do, I just get a small black aread, and nothing else. Tried with both newest IE and Firefox.

I can only see the faction background. There are no buttons, no text, no pictures...nothing. Just a background.

First of all, I think Genre Wars has potential :) I like it thus far, although the bugs (or rather features) sometimes make me want to kill the stupid game dead (but that's an emotion only instilled by good games, so go figure ;))

Time for some feedback:

The "retreat to the city if your army is vastly underpowered"-option doesn't always work. I know for a fact that I didn't have this option on these two fights (in which calling my army underpowered would probably have been an exaggeration):

http://www.escapistmagazine.com/profiles/genrewars/view_battle?b=62695
http://www.escapistmagazine.com/profiles/genrewars/view_battle?b=62687

There are quite a few more examples, as far as I can tell I only get the option to retreat about half the time (only counting challenges where I'm sure that my army is underpowered). It's not that much of a problem with an army like mine, only used to scout (most of the time I don't even lose money, since killing one unit of an opponent nets me more reward than the cost of the lost army). However, I can see this becoming a problem if you want to go the warzone with a fully stuffed (and balanced) army, only to be crushed by an overpowered army without the option to retreat.

This flaw increases one serious issue the game currently has: It's strategically and especially financially unwise to stay for a prolonged time in the warzone with a balanced army, since your opponents have time to build up an army catered especially to your weaknesses. This is due to the fact that annihilating a single stack of an army is (in terms of winning) more effective than killing an otherwise bigger number of units from various stacks. The cash bonus handed out for annihilating stacks encourages players to build one-sided armies which they use only to assault a balanced army, kill one stack, and receive the cash reward. Most of the time, they also win the battle, because eliminating one stack obviously gives a bonus to your winning score. It took me some time to discover this tactic (at first wondering why someone with a lopsided army would attack my balanced army), and since it was (and is) the easiest tactic to gain money, I employed it for some time. At one point my win-rate was as high as 65%.

It was then that I noticed how the game punishes you for having a good rating. This was before the re-introduction of seeing lesser armies, mind you, so this point is (to the greatest extent) no longer viable. However, it some effect on me, as I started using my scout army to a greater extent. I would enter the warzone, scout for available armies, head back to the base, and find out that it was impossible for me to build a balanced army that wouldn't exceed the rating (so I wouldn't be able to challenge whomever I wanted to challenge). This further increased the use of assault armies, only built to eliminate a single stack. After some hours of scouting, heading back to the base, hiring, heading back to the warzone - only to find out that the chosen opponent was already gone, I got tired of it, and decided to ignore rating. This was about the same time the challenging of lesser armies was (re-)introduced, and - as I found out after some curses as to why I had to fight vastly overpowered armies, I noticed that not only did I not lose money, I also managed to decrease my rating without much of a risk. So my rating went down from 150% (of army power), to a neutral 100% (at which it remains right now). This is where another flaw (imho) kicks in: I guess I could further decrease my rating (and speed up the process by challenging powerful armies myself), to a point where I could challenge underpowered armies without them having a chance to retreat (even if the you-can-retreat-without-penalty-option worked reliably).

So much for my story of Genre Wars, on to some suggestions:

- Encourage players to build balanced armies.
So far I have two ideas (used alone or combined) about how to achieve that:
=> Penalize players who don't make use of all of their unit slots. So using only two stacks will decrease defense and/or offense of these units by 10%, using only one stack will increase the penalty to 20%. This would still leave open the possibility to only use units of one type. However, three stacks of 15 soldiers have less of an impact than one stack of 45 soldiers, so it would be way more difficult to be effective with assault armies.
=> Reward players who make use of different units. I was thinking about a battle buff, depending on what combination of units you used. For example, if you had Tankers in your army, they could increase offense and/or defense of your Shooters by 10%. Shooters would strengthen Stalkers, Stalkers would strengthen Tricksters, and so on. This could be further complicated (if you want to), by handing out offense and defense bonuses to different armies, or by making the bonus depend on the tier of the army.

- Encourage players to stay in the warzone for a longer time.
Again, this could be achieved by using penalties and/or bonuses:
=> Force players to stay in the warzone for at least 10 minutes, until they can retreat back to the home base to hire a different army. This would also have an impact on balanced armies, since it would make lopsided armies more vulnerable.
=> Reward players that stay in the warzone by giving out a battle buff (albeit not as much as the buff outlined above for having a balanced army). Something along the lines of 3 minutes = 1% bonus, capping out at 3% or 5%. Since there's already a counter for how long someone has been active, it would be visible to other players as well.

Have fun, and thanks for the game :)

For those with FireFox 3.0.8 and having problems, 3.0.9 was released and resolved a couple of issues with cookies. If you could let me know if that fixes your problems that would be great.

Many users experienced an issue where a corrupt local database caused Firefox to "lose" its stored cookies. (bug 470578)

Underpowered is based on value of the your army between the bank and your army. Not that 1 side has 50 of each and 1 side as 1 of each. When you are in warzone and you see someone grey to you they are able to retreat no penalty. If you an army is red to you, you are able to retreat.

Again rating is not based on the army size in the warzone it is based on your overall cash and army size, interesting theory that I will pass on to those above me though.

As for your suggestions, I will definitely bring this up for upcoming builds.

Thank you very much for the feedback!
