After reviewing the battles from the first two weeks, we have made two major updates to Genre Wars.
1. Flanking - If you deploy an army with 0 units in one or more divisions, or have your division reduced to 0 units by casualties, your army will now suffer penalties "from brutal flanking attacks". So be sure to keep all three of your divisions stacked up strong!
2. Scouting - Scouting enemies now only reveals the configuration the enemy used in their most recent battle, not their current army configuration. You will only learn the actual, exact composition of the enemy army when you attack! So don't think you can build a custom army to attack someone, because you won't know for sure what they actually have, only what they've fought with in the past.
These changes were made to update the game against tactics that were reducing playability and fun. Specifically, players were avoiding the war zone except to enter with specially-designed armies customized to attack a particular foe. But everyone doing this meant the war zone was empty. Our expectation is that you should be in the war zone most of the time, returning to the city only as necessary to revise and replenish your army.
The new flanking rules reward players who develop well-rounded, full armies of three divisions, who learn the ins and outs of the combat system and the advantages and disadvantages of each type of unit. Using one strong division of 50 units with divisions of 1 or 0 units in the other slots will no longer be a successful strategy.
We hope these changes improve the play experience. Get in the war zone and let's get fighting!
Some people (like me) just stay there to be cannon fodder so other people can move up. With so little people playing that are your rank, what's the point in even trying?
Heck, I just saw this in action against a ninja player with 1 Oni, 2 Spirit Archer, and about 20 Horsemen with my army of 10 Battle bots, 10 assassinators, and 10 gun droids. Oni and Spirit archers died in rounds 1 and 2, and his Horsemen were slaughtered in the final 3, even though I only had units weak to chargers and chargers themselves. Definitely a good update, and maybe sometime in the next few months you could release an expansion pack?
You are probably in the upper echelons of fighters though, so you actually have people to battle. If you reset your army there is hardly anyone to battle, ever.

Actually I'm really not. I have about 100,000. I just take the time to make my army worth the same as people in the warzone. People are completely inpatient though and usually leave the warzone by the time I'm back in.

But, do you have people at the same level as you to battle? If you go down to 9000 it's a different story. Possibly in the next update there could be some bot's to deal with these gaps.

I actually just fought against Nivag, I saw him once with a score of about 160,000. Then he left the zone, reduced his army to about 28000 (my level) and we had a good fight. He kicked the crud out of me, mostly as Low-tech masses(Weak/Weak pirates and deplorable/weak parrots) > High-tech Special forces (Average Stalker and charger droids and Weak/Weak gun droids), but It was an enjoyable fight anyways.

That's a very good point. Tank wars had the same problems a while back and they ended up solving it with bots. Before then you had to meet up with a friend in order get any kind of multiplayer going. The way they tested it's worth was by starting with one bot and noticing that we played the 'F' out of it, would drop in a large amount of them one every few weeks. Now it's a regular deal.
One problem though, It greatly waters the point system.

I have noticed the same. I sit idly in the warzone for hours (not literally) picking my nose, and when finally a worthy opponent appears, he´s gone before I manage to challenge him. There´s also a disturbing lack of challenges by armies equally strong/weak as me. Only armies either ten times stronger or weaker tend to swarm around me.
To help through the down periods when other players aren't available, we are actively working on a "random battles" option that will put you up against a random AI enemy of comparable power to you.
Archon: I'm glad the changes are well received so far.

That's even better :) I'm liking these updates the more I read about them, and playing right now, so hopefully more people will start to come back to the game soon enough :D

I figure I like the updates. Only I didn't know about them till I was about to start a topic on the armies not updating correctly. Suddenly, I was attacked by somebody with and army of xxx size, I accept, and suddenly it is different than what I expected! Now these changes are good in my opinion. It would have been nice though if there could be some sort of notification in Genre Wars itself about this, so nothing comes up unexpected.
It seems like this change of "hiding the army" has actually made it HARDER to get a battle! I switched out to a 'newbie' army to try and get more action, and yet I'm getting challenged by guys who are filled with Mighty / Epic units and I've got Weak / Average!

I have played a few games with my 35,35,0 army and not noticed any flanking modifiers. Are they explicitly stated in the battle report?
I also did not do too badly in these battles. This would seem to indicate that even with the flanking bonus, having an empty slot still holds some advantages.
