Scott Pruitt finally resigns

The endless font of increasingly-ridiculous corruption scandals known to Washington as EPA Director Scott Pruitt has finally resigned.

This comes just at the end of a week which revealed that Pruitt had:

- asked federal government officials to find his wife a job with a $200,000 a year salary;
- directed his staffers to pay for his hotel visits and restaurant stays with their personal credit cards;
- maintained two sets of books detailing his schedule; a private one that was his actual schedule, and a public one that was scrubbed clean of any potentially controversial meetings - such as a dinner in Rome with controversial Australian prelate George Pell, a prominent climate change denier who was last year charged with multiple instances of child sexual abuse occurring between 1971 and 2001. A whistleblower says that at one point, there were actually three ledgers - the scrubbed public one, the private one, and a super-secret one known only to Pruitt and two or three other people at the agency.

All of this combined with the fantastic weight of prior scandals seems to have finally been sufficient to make Scott Pruitt resign.

And while this is great news, it's not really a victory for anyone worried about the environment - his replacement, Deputy Director Andrew Wheeler, is a former coal lobbyist and Washington veteran who has exactly the same agenda, but who has a great deal more experience navigating the federal government than Pruitt does. It's all-too-likely that Pruitt's departure will actually fortify the Trump administration's ongoing castration of the EPA by replacing him with someone who is just as bad but vastly more competent.

And before you ask: yes. The news was broken via Twitter.

Resigning is such a bullshit cop-out. Get arrested you [Pruitt] fuck.

This administration is gonna be remembered as a fucking farce.

So we in other words we are replacing "Soft" coal with "Hard" coal at the EPA. lol

Surprised this was a resignation, not a push. Pruitt himself clearly didn't really give a damn and the Trump administration does like giving people the shove when they're providing too much negative headline fodder

It isn't going to make a difference at this point, I am sure his replacement will be just as bad if not worse and the damage has already been done. It would be nice if he could be personally sued for the medical harm done to people by his decisions to shred the protections to keep them safe. really he should be held criminally responsible as well, but who am I kidding? Nothing will happen to him because there are no consequences for doing horrible things these days, they just get to do them and get away with whatever they choose to do because we have no accountability in our government or corporations and they know this so simply do not care how many people and wildlife are harmed by their actions.

We had a prime minister a few years ago who used the term Brown Coal instead of this Hard coal. Unsurprisingly, it didnt sell well

Huh. That's a brilliant analogy. Why didn't I come up with that?

Trump praised him as having done a fantastic job. And if you see his job as gutting environmental protections and devolving America further, then yes, fantastic work.

Just another evil cunt in a seemingly endless supply of evil cunt's lining up to do more damage. Where do they all come from, and what social and historical events converged to produce them?

If theres any justice in this twisted selfish world, he'd contract a life threatening chest infection from breathing a few of those unsavoury particles he so fond of sharing. Unaccountability only for the most privileged and harmful in society.

well that was why he was hired. so yes technically he did do a fantastic job

His fault was to be discovered not an unethical dirtbag, whoever comes next will just do the same but be more subtle about it.

If there were any kind of justice in this world, all these people would have their lives extended by about two hundred years so they'd be forced to live in the Mad Max-esque wasteland they seems so keen to accelerate us toward.

Forget the wall. We need to build a dome over the whole of the US. Made of diamondium, ideally.

Guess someone was sniffing in on his money laundering and he had to go.

Incivility works, yo.

Apparently he's also really bad at writing.

Another arrow to string in the bow of the 'nasty intolerant left' narrative. That poor, beleaguered, non-corrupt and totally ethically upstanding man.

His second fault was not finding a suitable scapegoat

That is just...willful, wanton cruelty towards the common comma.

Anyone who legitimately thinks that Scott Pruitt was ethically upstanding is a lost cause.

Seriously. They'd have to be missing part of their brain or something.

Oh and it actually came out that Pruitt had to be informed he had resign.

Don't let the door hit you on the way out Scotty! And please be so kind and repay all of the money you spent on your luxuries ok?
