*facepalm* followed by a long *sigh*
Maybe because China doesnt want its poeple protesting thier rape of natural resources... wich Avatar is largely against. Ha i said the above before i read the article... man when you are on it you are on it... oughta pat myself on the back.
o for fucks sake | |
China banned something?! How unexpected. But to be honest, I'm sure James Camerons making enough money as it is. Also, a couple of the comments were funny. "Strongly condemn the Western director for using Avatar to allude to China's current situation!!" " This film is too reactionary, I can't tell if they're serious or not.
Reasons such as this make me feel lucky that Australia isn't like China............ yet.
First of, what the hell does this mean? "Chinese authorities have ordered cinemas to stop showing James Cameron's blockbuster Avatar in its 2D version, fearing that its parallels with forced eviction could cause social unrest." Are they fearing that the Chinese people will revolt after the movie? Since we ALL know the Chinese people work as one...
I'm sure China's finished with banning things from now on. They'll turn a new leaf any day now.
Yes. But not if they see it in 3D. It is okay then.
I wonder how much unearned money did Cameron lose because of this ban +))
They think it's properganda from the west
Give Rudd time... he wants us to be just like 'em... great Australian firewall, movie and video game censorship, etc... I feel sad I voted for him. wont be making that mistake again
I think we should be more worried about Michael Atkinson.
are you sure it wasnt just Atkinson bribing the Chinese? Maker help us all...
If they're Chinese I would assume that they are serious. Those people are stone-cold-fuck-nuts. I can't wait to go to war with them and have my share of kills. I LOVE CHINESE FOOD!
[Shrugs] It doesn't surprise me. However I would point out that there are eminent domain issues in the US. New London Connecticut (where I live) was in the national spotlight not too long ago over a similar kind of issue to what China is doing. China is however doing it on a much larger scale apparently though, and unlike all of the flak the goverment gets here due to free speech, China is of course stomping it. Still they aren't the only ones who feel that paticular pain. Overall that wasn't the message of the movie, but I can see why they feel that way. I can also see why the movie wouldn't appeal tot he Chinese Authorities on a number of other levels as well, so if it wasn't this issue it would have doubtlessly been nailed on another one. That said it's not just China and Australia, things haven't gone as far in the US due to numerous protections, but the goverment is gradually trying to get people to give it the abillities it would need to do very similar things. While the results are the same (albeit with differant media) I will give Atkinson a bit of credit that he IS acting for differant reasons. He at least probably thinks he's protecting people. In China's case it's engaging in censorship and information control to limit response to it's victimization of it's own citizens.
Yeah, they're serious. Nothing like blind patriotism to get the masses all riled up.
I agree that Atkinson and China are very different animals. While they share enforced censorship, their motivations for doing so are distinctively dissimilar. I'm curious as to the cases you allude to in the US, and why you say that the US gov is attempting to get increased censorship permissions. Please enlighten.
They're just racists. Keeping the blue man down.
Lol, China. Wonder why we allow them to oppress their people like they do? Oh yea, they make all our stuff and own a lot of our debt...
We white folk will never understand the asian cultures in their true meaning. That and the fact that they have a comunist cccccombo going on shifts them closer to martians than to the rest of the world.
Well considering how paranoid China are about people getting ideas, I'm not surprised.
Well, this is a country where women crushing kittens and puppies to death with high heel shoes is a popular sex fetish, so this is pretty tame news.
Exactly. Yet. Start packing your bags.
WWWWHHHHHAAAAAT? Thats f'ing hot... /that was totally a bad joke people. Dont bother trying to understand the chinese if you arent chinese... too much history and a culture thats just got some whacky stuff... i sill cringe about the foot binding.
No joke, it's actually true. One woman in particular became notorious for it, she was nicknamed the 'Kitten Killer of Hangzhou'.
Jesus the comments on that second link.
serouisly, for crying out loud!
Not to mention home evictions.
So 2D is evil but 3D is ok? now I know how paranoid China is but that’s just fucking ridicules do they really believe they can stop people from thinking?
| |
Wow, that is fascinating... if not alittle disturbing. I thought balloons were wierd enough but that takes the cake.
well you can see it in Hong kong and depending where you live in china its not that far and also seem the government are having them from a shit movie
you obviously haven't been to japan.....
Care to elaborate?
And I thought I was unshockable, until I saw it on Encyclopedia Dramatica.
It's quite simple really. The Na'Vi make beloved People's Communist Party Representative President Hu Jintao feel short. Oh, sorry. I meant to say, shorter. In all seriousness, the simple fact is that this story has struck a chord with the Chinese people, in regards to the cruelty, oppressiveness and ecological vandalism of their own government. Cameron might not have been specifically aiming for them, but the fact of the matter is that film, being art, is interpretive, and people must take what meanings from it it they can. And the Chinese people have taken meaning. And that meaning reads thus: UPRISING!
I get the feeling the chinese government has alot of free time on it's hands...

Yes it's true but rediculous. China has banned the further showing of Avatar in its theatres.
Here's the article. http://news.icm.ac.uk/business/china-bans-avatar-fearing-social-backlash/5326/
And another article which lead to the ban. http://www.chinasmack.com/stories/avatar-movie-chinese-reactions-long-lines-shanghai/
