Worst Government/Leader in History

 Pages 1 2 3 4 NEXT

So here I am shoveling snow on the walkways, it hasn't snowed and it wasn't blown there by the wind. Our government decided that after weeks of large snowfalls that they needed to remove some snow from our streets (it really wasn't that bad), fair enough, except we got the worst of the snow-banks (I don't know where the hell it came from, it couldn't have been from our street). You see I live right infront of a park that nobody parks at, when the machines removed some of the snow only one third of it landed on the side of the street where the park is.

The other two thirds landed on the side of the street everyone parks at. Now while I spend 45 minutes chipping away at this snow bank of packed on snow and ice to make a path for my grandmas bus pickup it got me thinking. Does our government realize that we park on this side of the street and yet we recived the biggest snowbanks on our side (the park has no hills so blocking it off is really not an issue). I realize I'm mostly just whining and bitching here and ignore the paragraphs above, and no Stephen Harper is not the worst leader in history, and Canadas government is for the most part pretty good and fair.

So I ask you fellow Escapists, who is the worst leader or government in history due to corruption, stupidity, ignorance, depravity, cruelty, heartlessness and just plain evil nature. I figure we are going to get a lot of leaders from the Medieval Era. Now to kick things off I will start with Adolf Hitler (If you guessed it go give yourself a cookie or something).

We all know the facts about Hitler, Austrian, dead-beat painter, prick, facist, Nazi, asshole, genocidal and just plain old evil. He made the Jewish population in Germany a scapegoat, he forced them into labour camps and he ordered many atrocities be proformed there. One of the main reasons Germany lost WWII is because he became paranoid and killed off most of his generals, then he took over the German army even though he was a politician (chalk one up for stupidity).

Now when posting who you think is the worst leader in history remember to add facts to back up why. If you think this is a waste of your time just blow off steam with this.

Me in bizarro world.

Considering the reactions of some of the older adults I know, Thatcher seems to be a good candidate. Apparently people would queue up to piss on her grave.

I was too young to really acknowledge any of it though.

The Polish Sejim of the 17th century.

Weak, ineffective, corrupt, and eventually over run.

Worst as in most evil, or worst as in least effective?

Kubanator:
Worst as in most evil, or worst as in least effective?

Your choice.

Stalin. Twice the body count of Hitler, mass starvation due to a socialist overhaul, and the invasion of Poland, making Eastern Europe Communists, starting the Cold War, and trying to starve millions in East Berlin to make a political point.

Oh and also this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stalin

Mao Zendong, such an evil bastard. Killed over 50 million of his "OWN" people during a state of peace.

Once again, the award goes to.... *dun dun dun* Micheal Atkinson. I know it's kind of shallow but I don't care.

Franklin Roosevelt. Everyone thinks that he got us out of the great depression, but the evidence says that if he had done absolutely nothing, then the great depression probably wouldn't have lasted as long.

He isn't a leader. He has a fair bit of power in a few key fields, but certainly not enough to be considered a leader.

As for my choice, I would choose hitler but if not for a few dumb moves he would of put germany as the uber country. Yes he was evil, but as a leader if he hadn't of invaded russia, he quite possibly would of ruled half the globe. Which ignoring the humanatarian issues, would of made germany an uber country.

So I guess I'll go with Pol Pot. Set his country back.. well who knows how many decades.

No, a minority of economists claim if he had done nothing, the depression would have been shorter. The majority of economists have the same evidence and believe differently.

Not that it really matters that much. It's hardly a good sense of perspective to compare a leader whose economic policies slightly prolonged a depression to leaders who have devastated their nation's economy, caused the annihilation of their own country, or killed millions of people out of malice or rubbish ideology.

Mugabe,
evil,
self destructive
Insane,
completely unpunished

In terms of cruelty I say itīs Cambodia's communist leader Pol Pot (AKA Saloth Sar). Slaughtering 20% of the country's population using mostly farming tools sort of makes Stalin and Hitler look pretty innocent by comparison.

As for incompetence, the choice is harder to make. I am tempted to say Nicholas II of Russia did a fine job ignoring all the political problems the empire was facing, thus turning a country with a rapidly developing economy into a gunpowder barrel with a burning fuse.

Stalin was a complete slime of a human being, but if we are talking body-count then Chairman Mao killed twice as many. The 'Great Leap Forward' resulted in the starvation of something like 38 million people.

George W. Bush. The man was less a president than he was a shill for the corporations that bought his election. He took a stable economy, a functional military, and improving social services and pissed it all away. September 11th happened under his watch, and they knew it was coming but did nothing to stop it. Eight years of fail later, civil liberties have been tragically rolled back, privacy is a thing of the past, the economy is in the shitter; all because one president and his corporate backers wanted to make money off the backs of the country that let them do it.

Edit: I realize there are leaders that sanctioned genocide in their own countries, but those countries started off in pretty bad shape. Bush took a country in great shape and all but destroyed it.

Dude... you are still eating. That alone is vastly more than a lot of people had under Mao, Stalin, Kim Jong-Il, Pol Pot, and others.

I'd go for Mugabe.

Hitler, Stalin and Pol Pot were all evil but at least they were capable of running their countries with some semblance of efficiency (albeit in a shockingly bad manner). Mugabe can't even get that bit right.

He was also so paranoid that he killed his entire highly trained intelligence service a few times over. They were replaced by loyal Stalinists who often had no experience. His entire covert intelligence strategy was, from what I can tell, based around the suspicion that Israel and the west were attempting to destabilize him as part of a Zionist conspiracy.

However, for pure incompetence, I will have to go with the French Second Republic.

Pol Pot and the Khmer Rouge. Makes the Nazis look like misguided boy scouts

Mugabe and Papa Doc Duvalier
Corruption
Kleptocracy
Generally ineffective governance.

His name was President Mugabe Hitler Stalin Mao.

And he was horrifying.

Hmmmm.... Serious answer: Probably Pol Pot and the Cambodian Commies. Joke answer: C'thulhu and his servants on that island. I've been their once, every day your suppose to kill one animal (and if you cant, you get tortured and mutilated) daily, go to church once a day to beat up some non-believers before their dunked into the pit C'thulhu lives in, and murder anyone who doesn't obey C'thulhu's twisted laws... Thank god I had a vista, most of the laws don't apply to those with Vista's.

Mugabe. Few people I could kill, he is one of them. Not only has he ruined a country but gained it through independence and still will not allow someone else to take his place. It was also Zimbabwe, the former rice bowl now near the nadir of living in the world or Africa.

CALIGULA! FUCK IM! I HATE THAT GUY!

I think Caligula counts as one of the worst, because while you hear about stupid dictators from shitty countries all the time, Caligula took a great Empire and fucked it around the ass and up the dick.

Jimmy Carter

James II of England.

I'll pick one from my lifetime: Ahmedinejad. It's not just that he is so blatantly corrupt-- I could deal with a few scandals here and there, but some the things he does and says seem downright absolutely evil. He's comes off to me as a movie villain-- insisting that Israel must be "wiped off the map," oppressing peaceful protesters, throwing journalists and politicians who disagree with him into jail en masse.

And that's just the stuff you frequently hear about-- with all of the heavy information censorship sanctions in Iran's media and internet, who knows what kind of heinous shit he's trying to keep under wraps.

Not necessarily the worst leader in all of history, but then again there's still time for him to get worse.

Yep. But from your lifetime you still have quite a bundle to pick from. Mugabe, Milosevic, Hussain, Mohammed Omar, Kim Jong-Il, Pinochet, Islom Karimov....

At least Ahmedinejad is kinda funny, I think he'd be a good used car salesman actually. Pincochet would be a good news anchor, Milosevic looks like a dentist, Mugabe puts me in the mind of a sports pundit, and Kim Jong-Il is the kind of guy who looks like he should be driving a bus.

This is what happens when people miss their natural calling in life!

It's easyt to say someone like Hitler or Michael Atkinson, so I'll hit a little closer to home.

Woodrow -motherloving- Wilson. What an asshole. See Wikipedia.

I'll go with Caligula.

Or, as Frankie Boyle said, on dicussing the prospect of Thatcher having a state funeral-

"For Ģ3 million they could give everyone in Scotland a shovel and we would dig a hole so deep that we could hand her over to Satan personally!"

I agree Abberdinnerjacket looks like a used car salesman!

Gaddafi looks like he should star in Big Brother, the young Stalin looks like Borat

and Mussolini looks like he should have starred as a James Bond evil henchman.

Heh, you know what's funny? Despite that, the people of China actually consider him a hero, or a liberator. I know, I'm Chinese, and one of my grandfathers thinks the world of that guy. Personally I think Mao's a moron.

Mao Zedong. Every time I think of all the deaths that can be attributed to him I just want to curl up in a ball. I like to think that him, Hitler, Stalin, and all the rest of those murderous bastards throughout history are all locked in their own little hell together.
