Poll: Iceland's socialist government tears porn a new asshole

 Pages 1 2 NEXT

Sigh......

Our hopelessly backward government has unleashed a wave of new anti-porn statements, but this is the first time I have actually gotten outright angry at them for their bullshit. Allow me to explain.

In Iceland where I live, the creation and distribution of porn is illegal and most of the older generations (that is, 90% of the people in charge of the country) possess a strong anti-porn attitude. However, since the law only says that creation and distribution of porn is banned simply owning it or browsing porn on the internet (we do not censor out internet and thus Icelanders can still view all of the internet porn they want....for now) has thus far led to no arrests or any kind of police action that I am aware of. Needless to say, that means that a lot (if not most) of the younger people who grew up with the internet (and thus access to porn) don't share the same anti-porn stand as the people currently in charge.

Anyways, now that I have explained that I will get straight to the main topic.

In the last couple of days, the former (and awesome) comedian and current mayor of Iceland's capital city of Reykjavík Jón Gnarr has been under major attack from the government and Iceland's human rights organization for a comment he made while being interviewed by a French reporter.

During the interview, the French reporter asked Gnarr on what he spent most of his time while browsing the internet. Gnarr responded by saying "mostly just porn", he was only joking of course (like I said he is a ex comedian). Now of course, if some major political character in another country said that then it would probably have resulted in a backslash as well, but what makes this case different is the huge amounts of bullshit that the government keeps wrapping it in.

At the moment Iceland's government exists of a coalition between Iceland's socialist parties, "The Left Green Movement" and "The Social Democratic Alliance (also known as the Socialist Association)" and both have been more then happy to demonize the porn industry as being the worst thing ever since unmoderated internet forums.

The government was so shocked upon hearing Gnarr's words (despite officially saying that they knew he was joking) that it called together a city council and spent the day bashing Gnarr.

In order to do this, they had to cancel their original plan of discussing how to solve the growing poverty in the country as a result of the recent economic disaster.......

Here is what the chairman of the Left Green Movement said (the news articles I will link to are in Icelandic by the way and since Google translate sucks I will just translate the parts myself, not that you can't use google translate if you want to):

This may have been a joke but I cannot agree that it was innocent. This kind of a joke "normalizes porn" and nothing else. Humor is a sharp weapon like Gnarr himself knows well. With this joke, assuming it was a joke Gnarr is normalizng porn. This is a very serious issue and and directly contradicts the Cities official statements regarding human rights issues

The chairman then went on to state that joking around with porn was not funny in the slightest and that Gnarr was sending a "bad message to the international community" with his words (because like we all know, porn is just as hated and reviled throughout the rest of the civilized world as it is by Icelandic socialists (sarcasm)).

She (yes, the chairman is a female) then went even further, when she said:

One can wonder what affect this has on young boys since Jón Gnarr (who like I mentioned above, is a former comedian and highly popular with the younger generations) is a role model to many boys. Porn usage is a problem in Iceland and thus it is important that the mayor fights with and not against the official organizations that are fighting against sexual slavery and human trafficking and doesn't mock them with such comments

Source: http://www.visir.is/klamnotkun-jons-gnarr-raedd-i-borgarradi/article/2010421019524

Wait, so browsing internet porn means you support sexual slavery and human trafficking now? Really?

The chairman wasn't the only person to omit some bullshit out either, here is what Iceland's human rights council had to say about Gnarr's "shocking comment":

Porn is cruel violence. I don't understand what they mayor said something like that, since he is a firm adversary of violence. Reykjavík's human rights policy rejects porn

Oh! And all of this is happening just less then a year after they also deported (that's right, DEPORTED! Let that sink in for a while....) some tourists that were on Iceland for no states reason other then that they were working for the porn industry because it was discovered that they were working for the porn industry. Gotta love our government![/b]

Don't you just love Socialists and how they try to protect you from all of those nasty evils lurking in those nasty corners of the world where people are actually allowed to pick their own moral alignments?

Yea yea yea, true socialism is freedom and equality and all of that, but being someone who is actually living under a real socialist government I have yet to see them do much besides telling me how to behave.

Besides the obvious fact that not every porn maker ever is a criminal (that and the complete lack of evidence for it, which is conveniently ignored by the government by the way) I should also be allowed to choose for myself if I want to watch porn or not. Nobody is forcing anyone to watch it, what right have they to tell me what to do?

Discuss.

I'm quite surprised that creating and distributing ordinary porn between consensual adults is still illegal anywhere in Western Europe. Any Danish party suggesting such thing wouldn't survive the next election...

I doubt that opposition to porn is a - specifically - "socialist" matter though. As the first part of the OP indicated, it would more be a gap of generations and a pathetic puritanism not exclusive to any political wing.

As long as it's consensual between adults, I'm firmly against any legal regulation. As for the supposed unethical/sexist aspect of it, that should be left up to each individual viewer to decide; plenty of written or animated pornography for those who take issue with the "real" thing anyway, I should think.

So "Porn is just fine" it is.

The Escapist has taught me to avoid Iceland and Australia when considering any travel plans.

Imperator_DK:

Yea, and guess what. Iceland is also the only country in Europe (that I know of that is, I am not 100% sure that there aren't any others) where public blasphemy is still illegal and it can land your sorry ass into jail. In fact its not just public blasphemy, books that speak just a little negatively about god can also land you into jail.

But what do you expect when the nation has a national anthem like this:

Oh, God of our country! Oh, our country's God!
We worship Thy name in its wonder sublime.
The suns of the heavens are set in Thy crown
By Thy legions, the ages of time!
With Thee is each day as a thousand years,
Each thousand of years, but a day,
Eternity's flow'r, with its homage of tears,
That reverently passes away.
Iceland's thousand years,
Iceland's thousand years!
Eternity's flow'r, with its homage of tears,
That reverently passes away.

Our God, our God, we bow to Thee,
Our spirits most fervent we place in Thy care.
Lord, God of our fathers from age unto age,
We are breathing our holiest prayer.
We pray and we thank Thee a thousand years,
For safely protected we stand;
We pray and we bring Thee our homage of tears,
Our destiny rest in Thy hand.
Iceland's thousand years,
Iceland's thousand years!
The hoarfrost of morning which tounted those years,
Thy sun rising high, shall command!

Our country's God! Our God's country!
Our life is a feeble and quivering reed;
We perish, deprived of Thy spirit and light
To redeem and uphold in our need.
Inspire us at morn with Thy courage and love,
And lead through the days of our strife!
At evening send peace from Thy heaven above,
And safeguard our nation through life.
Iceland's thousand years,
Iceland's thousand years!
O, prosper our people, diminish our tears
And guide, in Thy wisdom, through life!

Wow! I suddenly feel ashamed of being Icelandic now......

Now that's just mean. Iceland still have some really beautiful environments to look at, and its not like someone will just jump out of nowhere and arrest you if you say something nice about porn.

Lol i think its funny. I wish the people that say porn is horrible for the person making it could hear what porn stars have to say. I remember hearing a thing by Katie Morgan that someone asked her if she felt used. It amounted to she gets paid to do what she loves, and she feels like maybe she is using horny teenagers.(don't quote me on that one I can't remember what was said)

.... I'm gonna be honest i think some of the girls in the porn industry probably couldn't make it anywhere else.... cept a trophy wife.

Of course i can't agree with REAL sexual slaves but I'm pretty sure slave's don't get a 6 figure check.

Actually, Denmark's got a blasphemy article on the books, but it hasn't lead to any convictions since 1946. It's been considered several times since though, last time during the Muhammed Cartoon crisis thing, but the last actual case was in the 70's, and lead to acquittal.

De facto, I think it's safe to say it's dead, but I'd like it struck off the record nonetheless, as it and other western parallels are used by Middle Eastern countries to justify their - far harsher and often applied - blasphemy articles, and to the casual reader of the penal code it gives the distinct impression that freedom of speech is far more limited in this regard than it actually is.

I am also from Iceland, so i can safely tell you this: THERE ARE NO SUCH LAWS. But, there are in fact laws that prohibit anyone from diminishing someones faith in a way that does not contribute to the discussion (a supreme court ruling said that if it does not contribute to a discussion it goes against the rules).

Hver, sem opinberlega dregur dár að eða smánar trúarkenningar eða guðsdýrkun löglegs trúarbragðafélags, sem er hér á landi, skal sæta sektum eða [fangelsi allt að 3 mánuðum]. Mál skal ekki höfða, nema að fyrirlagi saksóknara.

These laws make blasphemy illegal last time I checked.

Sounds like an excellent rule for a private forum, and a horrific mean of government censorship for a penal code.

Does it pertain to undue "diminishing" of all ideologies/world views, or is religion getting special treatment?

Same man, at least for us porn and videogame addicted people. God damn I love watching porn then killing zombies, I find it strange that Iceland is so against it. I mean, it's quite unusual to be honest, well really just strange.

Then again I'm not one to talk, I was at a strip club less than a week ago, the way it sounds i'm likely now banned from Iceland.

Well this is sad news. I think that among leftists in general the feminist anti-porn wing is outvoicing the freedom of expression wing. To me it seems that the anti-porn feminist viewpoint is new and emerging. Many people are afraid of challenging it because it's politically incorrect to disagree with feminists. So if they continuously outshout the free expression faction of the left I'll expect more European countries to pass laws against porn.

Never knew Iceland was so backward. Like...what else is the internet for?

I say the Danes get back in their longships and take Iceland back and then hit the reset button...It's bloody typical of colonials to go and act up like this. First they're making internet fire-walls and think universal healthcare is socialist. Next they'll think the earth is 6000 years old and start bombing abortion clinics..oh wait what?

image

Oh dear, time to stop being silly.

Anyhow, even Conservative party backbenchers wouldn't support a ban on porn in the UK. Not many people are loud and proud about the porn they watch, and for good reason to. But to ban it is to way too radical and authoritarian for most Europeans. Really, most types of porn don't harm anyone (if it's drawn, it can harm nobody, unless the artist stabs himself with the pen) and so any porn which does not lead to unconsented harm to others should be legal, and i would consider a breach in individual liberty to ban it.

As Impertator says, banning porn isn't socialist. Socialism is an economic stand point, it has little to do with liberty.

Finally, while i'm sure it's annoying having an older generation harking on about the supposed evils of pornography, the fact that they're old means that they will die off in the end. The young people of today will fill the government, and either re-write or simply ignore any anti-porn laws in a similar manner to which Danemark and i think Ireland ignore their anti-blasphemy laws.

This just proves how hypocritical those politicians are! At least the male ones anyway.

You have some seriously conservative Socialists over there though. Ours are much more progressive they legalized prostitution decades ago. (Wich is rationaly the best solution, but thats for another discussion.)

Porn objectifies women. Women in porn are being exploited. Porn causes rape.

Porn is also a sign of the social and moral decadence that is corrupting our great civilisation. It is of course, a plot by Socialist Muslims to weaken the West from within.

I think OP means social-democratic when he says socialist, and I agree those usually have "the right opinion"(TM) and don't mind telling people what to think.

OT: Seriously Iceland. Banning porn? I thought you were cool.

Edit:
Less-than-controversial cartoons.

Of course, to no less extent are the males as well.

Clearly Stalin is mind controlling all Muslims from beyond the grave to try and make the West into a new Stalinist state. My gods!

Edit: Also, the title was clearly an elaborate pun, yes?

So basically Iceland's stance is that if two people fuck and nobody is watching it's fine, but if they turn on a camera it turns the woman into an abused sex slave? Even if, say, it was her idea? Sorry, I find that idea to be blatantly sexist and hypocritical.

As for the main, yeah, use porn how you want. Government should pretty much stay out of your bedroom.

I don't care because as far as I know, you joined the few countries I can marry in.

you deserve shit like this for giving us Björk

just kidding

Shock and Awe:

I don't recall ever calling you backwards.

Well accept your current health care perhaps, but everybody is doing that.

Honestly the only problem I have with porn it that no-talent ass-wipes get rich by doing nothing more than stripping in front of a camera. Show me someone who made millions by being a mechanical engineer and I'll show some respect. Show me someone who made millions by having sex on camera and I'd rather spit in their face regardless of their bust size.

Fighting porn is done by people who don't like porn, and people who want to tell you how to behave can readily be found on the left, right and centre. In Iceland, there may be more on the left. In other places, they may be more on the right.

Your real issue is explained in your early paragraph: older Icelandic people don't want younger Icelandic people to see porn. Wait a few decades as they die of old age and are replaced by porn-friendly youngsters, and it's problem solved.

First off, I found the title hilarious.

Now I say protest! Maybe have a mass, public orgy or something.

A protest related to what you're protesting, I mean.

Not likely. Porn is a major taboo in Iceland, even people who watch porn often don't admit it publicly because they don't want to be labeled "a disgusting pervert" and thus get snubbed by a considerable sector of society. Porn is also extremely politically incorrect so any politician that openly admits liking porn is doing a lot of harm to himself, I mean just reading the comments from the Icelandic politicians I posted at the start of the thread is a fine example of how politically toxic porn is in Iceland.

Perhaps in 30 or 40 years from now porn will be considered normal here in Iceland, but I would not take the possibility for granted.

That's one heck of a hardcore (if you'll pardon the pun) anti-porn attitude you've got there in Iceland. Mind you, I don't admit I look at porn either. My girlfriend doesn't approve of it, and I play to who I answer to as well ; )

And it gets better, the Icelandic feminist association (which is supported by the government) just released a statement fallowing Jón Gnarr's (the mayor mentioned at the start of the post) apology where they say (translation from the Icelandic source):

The porn industry thrives of the misery of others, especially woman. In addition research has shown that porn has very negative effect on how men view sex and equality in relationships. The feminist association hopes that this will open a discussion about the porn industries cruel world and its connection with pornisation, prostitution, human trafficking and rape

Human trafficking and rape?!???

I really wished these were just some handful of radicals talking, I really really do. But sadly this is coming from the largest feminist movement in the country and is directly supported by the Left Green Movement (one of the two parties in charge like I mentioned at the start of the thread).
