Canada will not need warrants to get your internet information.
I agree, its a bad piece of legislation. I expect it will face constitutional challenge at some point. If police don't have enough to meet the standard for a warrant they shouldn't be on fishing expeditions. There may also be an administrative burden on the ISPs that could increase our internet costs, making us pay to lose more of our rights.
Pointless flutter that the government knows won't pass designed to distract people from wahtever it is they actually want to pass. Of course, there's the possibility they're serious, in which case WTF Canadian government how can you be so stupid.
What makes you think it wouldn't pass? They have a majority government, this has not been declared a free vote, its going to pass unless a large number of conservatives disappear at vote time. And since its being staged as an "anti child porn/pedo" law the last couple days I don't think anyone on the government benches wants to be on the "wrong side" of something protecting kids.
Here's what I don't understand, they want to be able to basically do insane amounts of research and track you through a cell phone basically something they can do now (94% of RCMP requests are approved by ISP's?) but without a warrant? What they don't want to spend 20 minutes to quickly talk to a judge before completely invading my privacy? and all because of our stupid majority government... I knew I should have voted.
Yes you should have. But I wouldn't be surprised if this passed in a minority situation too. Once you invoke "pedo" people seem afraid to fight against it.
Suck it, Canada. We declare Prop 8 unconstitutional, and then our neighbors do this...2012 is an awesome year for us Americans.
Oh please, don't brag about reversing a law that makes same sex unions illegal when the country you are talking to has legal same sex marriage.
Hang on hang on hang on. Canadians elected a ignorant conservative majority government!? Sorry, I had no idea. I don't keep that up on canadian poltiics. In that case, holy shit do I feel sorry for liberal canadians. Giving this a second read through, though, it's clear this bill makes utterly less sense then I thought possible. How the hell does getting basic sub info plus gps locations and IP protocols help track down child ponography consumers? Hell, how does this help the government in any way, shape, or form? Pointless power increases of government. I could understand if they were at least obtaining a list of sites visited, which was my inital assumption upon reading the article, but clearly this is just the government trying to get as much power as possible, however pointelss said power is.
and suddenly my government isn't some unique monster anymore, is it? >:D In all seriousness, 1984 seems to creep a little closer every day.
Yeah but you still have to deal with Republicans. Meanwhile Canada has had legalised same-sex marriage across the entire country for years, universal health care, copyright laws which don't punish people for downloading what's already on the internet (unlike the states where record companies will fine you ludicorious sums of money for the theft of a song worth only a few dollars), etc. etc. Let's also remember your government passed a law allowing the military to detain American civilians indefiniately this year. Have fun with that one.
Because they did the exact same thing with OAS?
That's different. They sent up a trial balloon, people freaked. So they back peddled. No legislation was on the table. With legislation on the table and negative reaction almost non existent (even from the opposition parties that are both MIA these days) why wouldn't they pass it?
Screw this! I'm moving to the US! Oh wait, I'm already in the US. But seriously, this is stupid. As civilization and technology progresses, we should be moving towards more freedom, not less.
Freaking thread Ninja'd. I was about to make a thread about this very thing. Seriously, guys, we NEED to find a way to spread the word of this! This thing is so fucked up!
Let me take a guess without even reading the article... This is about child pornography, isn't it?
The funny thing is this time no one can say "Screw it, im moving to Canada".
Don't worry children, stephen harper will save you from your own civil rights.
Holy Cow...If my news feed (plus those news TVs into he metro) is to be believed...He's apparently backing off on this... 0_o I never thought I'd see that day. *fistpump!*
Bill C-11 woudl like to have a word with you. THAT one is still super likely to pass. I've already mailed My MP, PLUS harper himself, PLUS I went to a protest (...There were only like...40 people there. Not good)...There isn't much more I can do! And it still looks like it will pass!

This is ridiculous, you have warrants for a reason, by this logic the police should be able to bust down someones door without a warrant.
