I have a question for people who hate religion Pages 1 2 3 4 NEXT
I dislike all religions, but most of the time it won't affect my overall judgement of someone in a big way. I specifically dislike the religions that caused the deaths of millions obviously, but people who have no solid evidence to back up their arguments (all religious people) just really annoy me. I can't accept something unless there's proof, and religious people just decide they don't need any.
I dislike all religions but my dislike came from Christianity due to growing up with them trying to indoctrinate you with their bullshit. If you ever challenged something they said (whilst still christian) they just gave an answer along the lines of "god did it" or "the bible says so". I dislike deist religions as many teach to be happy in ignorance and have no critical thinking (when it comes to religion). I know plenty of smart people but when it comes to religion they just fall back on things like "it's called faith" or "it's just what I believe". They can't back up why they believe in gods because they never thought about what they were taught whilst growing up, they just took what they were spoon fed to believe. /rant and explanation
I don't dislike any religion but I don't hold to one myself. The word i'd go with is indifferent. People are free to believe what they want i'm just not interested. To keep it simple, in my house I provide, I pay the bill, I put food on the table, my sperm gave life to my kids (with a little bit of help from my wife) and I control the remote control.... In this house ..... my wife is god, I am her minion. Seriously, my missus is the boss. She holds the bank and credit cards because I can't be trusted. She keeps the house running because i'm fucking clueless and forget, well, everything. I don't believe in any higher power (except my missus) but I don't put people down based on their beliefs. Religion just isn't for me.
I dislike religion. But I like the stories, I like some of the ideals. I like a lot of stuff religious charities do. And I have religious family members who are kind people. And I have religious friends whom I.. Avoid debating religion with at all costs. So yes, yes I hate religion buuut. As for 'why' im not religious well. . . I think when I was 9 and I started watching the news. And when I was 12 I started reading through a couple history books (Finishing a 7500 page series when I was 15) When I was 16 I decided to become an atheist. Several dozens of religious cropped up at the same time having equally many prohpets go around and spew the word of half a dozen different gods. And one or there just managed to make it out the other end. Theres been hundreds, maybe thousands of religions throughout time. And rather than just finding out which one is correct, I think its more likely that people looked up and realized how big the place is, how many things cannot be explained. And made up an explanation for it. While some many things still go unexplained, 95% of the Galaxy being unexplored, unwatchable. Unmeassurable. 95% of all materials in the galaxy being unknown. I dont think we need a god to explain it, and I dont think it will remain unknown forever. I think we are starting to have matured enough as a race to survive without a god. I am not saying it has been holding us back, many use the arguement that Christians held back important research in the middle ages but. . After reading history I know for that not to be quite the case, they just happened to be around as the dominant religion when all that shit happened. If I was a christian I sure would have been happy to use that on all the guys here claiming otherwise ; ). So basicly, I gained knowledge. And I decided to pursue knowledge, not because I wanted a special job. Or because somebody would be proud of me. But simply pursue knowledge for the sake of knowledge. And with this knowledge I decided to become an atheist. I am not saying that because I became an atheist because I was smarter than say, Christians. Buuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuut. I totally became an atheist as I started becomming interrested in Philosophy, Science, History and politics : P.
I hate evil religious sects that have committed horrible acts, like the Catholic Church. I hate any religion which preaches hate and intolerance, like Christianity or Islam. I dislike all non-deist religion because I think it is dumb, easily disprovable superstition which shouldn't have made it past the Renaissance.
It's funny that so many people claim to dislike all religions- when it's guaranteed that no one could possibly be familiar with all religions. So these people hate something despite being uninformed about it. They don't have facts, they don't have evidence, but they are prepared to take it on faith that they hate something they don't even know exists. ;)
I'm always accused of hating religion, but I don't. I hate the people who take religious teachings and use them to preach hatred, discrimination and bigotry. I also deeply dislike people who take their religious texts literally (lookin' at you Creationists!). But I don't hate religion itself. Sure I think it's stupid, but I think a lot of things are stupid without outright hating them. Plus come on, belief in an all-powerful, eternal being that watches over mankind? If that idea hadn't been around for millennia and someone said it to you on the street corner you'd think they were fucking nuts.
As some know now I'm a JW. I like religious people. I like talking to them and learning thier point of view. I love atheits because they are entirly different spectrum. I hate organized religions. Waht I mean is I hate it when good people get abused by those who are supposed to be there to help their followers but instead warp the ideas those people belive in. JW have had this situation happen to them as well and there are good people out there trying to do the right thing. This is evident with all the preists from the dark ages who sacraficed there lives trying to educate the poorer people by making bibles in thier peoples tounge and doing research into the teaching of the bible. Instead of following blind doctrines.
I don't hate religion, I merely find blind faith to be disgusting and insulting. So I don't hate religions, and I don't hate religious people. I just hate the fervent belief of something something without any shred of evidence. That actually means that I'm fairly cool with the mass majority of religious folk.
The point where I start to hate religion is when they make their rules part of my life even though I don't follow the religion. For example. Censorship. What the fuck is that about? I can't see swear words or tits on my tv just because you're offended by it? Oh, you're protecting the children? Well then, make it optional. Not every family and household follows the same set of values and rules. I think I should be able to hear swear words on TV without having them fucking bleeped. I don't care what the hell jesus or Mr. Whitebeard up there think, I should be able to hear and see whatever I want without having it filtered through some moral bullshit organization.
I don't hate religion, I just get angry when religious people hate other stuff.
That's not an entirely accurate concept, though. It sort of depends on what someone is defining religion as, but if it involves any sort of faith or supernatural belief, a person could simply hate faith or supernatural belief, which would make them inclined to hate religion. A person can hate all ice cream without having tasted every flavor because they hate eating anything that is cold, for instance.
Nobody cares about your religion if it's dogmatically about picking flowers. Mere "Theism" is as devoid of ethical content as is "Atheism". But "religion" is not mere "Theism", it is a more specific set of dogma, norms, and teachings. All major religions currently in existence have vile dogma on the books, be it about stoning gays or whipping adulterous women, and hence they - and all who proclaim adherence to them - are vile filth. As for the minor ones with no ability to affect what goes on in the real world, those aren't really worth mentioning any more than any other harmless delusion would be.
I hate most of my encounters with religion and what people will do in the name of their religion. But mostly, I just have a healthy dislike for the whole thing & don't care what an individual's beliefs are as long as they don't try and force them on me. Hate is a strong word.
I wouldn't say hate. I do very much dislike organised religion in its entirety. If you want to play the philosopher then I'll admit that if, hypothetically, there was this nice non-forceful religion out there that did plenty of the charity work and helped people have more moral happier lives, but didn't do all the fucked up bat-shit-crazy stuff, then I would have no problems with it. But I do not believe that religion exists. Name me one religion that actively promotes the reproductive rights of women.
Very true. Yeah, I don't dislike all religions - even ones I am familiar with (because some of them just aren't around to bother me or anyone else and are consigned to history). I only dislike the religions (whether in part or as a whole) that are cruel, discriminatory, coercive, racketeering, unjust, unkind, and murderous. I personally dislike irrational beliefs and try to (as far as I possibly can do so) base my views on reality (as best as it can be discerned). I have not yet encountered a religion that does not, at its core, have irrational beliefs. However that is something I dislike for myself - others are free to believe these things. Its only when those beliefs cause the problems mentioned above that I have issues. I am familiar with good and bad things done in the name of Christianity, Islam, Hindusim and Buddhism. I hate the bad. From a personal perspective; the worst things I have directly encountered from a religion has been from Islam - a family friend was murdered, teachers at my school were kidnapped and raped while on vaction and a girl who was a friend of a friend "disappeared" (code word for raped and eventually murdered for failing to marry her abductor) while local authorities refused to do anything because her family were apostates. Does that mean I hate Islam? No, I also know many Muslims who condemn and outright oppose such actions.
Disprove something for us, please.
Never heard of fried ice cream? lol
God can not be a loving, benevolent God because a loving, benevolent God would not have created cancer.
I wouldn't say I hate all religion. And I also wouldn't say I hate only Christianity. Generally, I dislike organized religion, but not religion itself.
And once you are familiar with most of them, you realize that you know practically nothing about any of them anyways. You'll study and study and then someone will just throw something totally new at it. I dislike Christianity because I find it boring.
I dislike irrational thought, and specifically Buddhism I feel is irksome because it encourages passive living. I admit not to be an expert on it. I know it endorses reincarnation and the hope of achieving enlightenment through keeping the mind empty rather than helping our species learn about the universe.
Yes and no, Buddhism simply encourages people to live their life in a virtuous manner more than anything else. By virtuous, I don't mean following a vague set of contradictory rules, more of an oath to do no harm. The farmer, the scientist, the doctor, etc. are all perfectly free to continue their work to the full extent of their ability as long as they wish, and to ignore the whole virtuous shtick if they wish (although temporary consequences are supposed to occur.). The idea is that they all have an infinite number of lives and no time limit to choose to pursue enlightenment, and that it truly does not matter when it will occur save on a personal basis. P.S. The emptying the mind thing is not a lifestyle or long term recommendation, but simply one brief step onto greater things, even for those of us that think the spiritual side of Buddhism is complete BS. Many of the world's greatest thinkers use meditation techniques based on Buddhist and/or Hindu teachings to focus their thoughts on their work. Sometimes clearing one's mind is a good thing. OT: I would be surprised to find anyone that honestly and truly hates religion on the whole. There are plenty of people that: But it is extremely difficult to rationally hate such a nebulous concept that encompasses so many diverse forms.
I think you might be mistaken First of all, Buddhists do not endorse reincarnation. If I recall, the point of enlightenment is not to be reincarnated, the point is to reach a state where one is not reincarnated. Second Buddhism is one of the most philosophical religions there is. Granted I'm not an expert myself but this much seems clear, to me at least
my levels of dislike for "religion" are generally confined to the prothletising, the self righteous, organised religion and its hierarchical supposedly "social" power structures and most of all "new age" religious types who i loath with a passion for some reason i've never quite managed to pin down. so eh just stay away from me if you've a thing for liberally reconstructed pseudo paganism combined with "eastern mysticism", tie-dying and crystals... but i generally quite like religious people if the keep it to themselves and kinda concentrate on the "be nice to one another" thread that runs through most religions and would happily attend something like C of E bakesale :P i was very friendly with a family who were in the salvation army at one time and they were some of the nicest people i've ever known.
That just made my day friend. I will have to remember that for the future. OT: I'm an Asatruer which means I believe in the old Norse Gods. I believe what I believe for personally reasons that I don't want to get into in depth.
I do not mind the concept of God. I hate religion. A divine and greater being with our best intentions in mind could honestly care less if we worshiped it, I would like to think its above the human sin of Pride. Jesus advocated love and kindness to all of human kind. Religion has twisted his message to corrupt, control, and destroy. Religion has always been used a tool to justify evil, or control those with less power than your own.
I dislike religions on principle, because religion entails faith in that which is unprovable. I hate certain religions, like Christianity and Islam, because of their overwhelmingly negative impact on modern society, but those are the exception to my dislike.
I dislike (or possibly hate and fear) any religion which has secular power.
- The demand for respect they want for insane claims with out a shred of evidence. And of course my own personal reason. The way religion fucked up my life and made me so much lesser than I could have been. But I do not hold a candle against the children victimized by the Catholic church and other child abusing sects.
I have an aversion to belief in things that not only can't be proved but are also completely irrational or clearly fabricated. If I hate anything, it's the attitude and actions of certain people. No, I haven't studied every single religion. But I don't think I have to in order to have an overall view - we can make sweeping statements like "All concentration camp commandants were bad" or "You shouldn't kill people" and even if the specifics are only correct 99 (or 95, or 90) percent of the time, the sentiment behind the statement is correct and robust. But I admit that, yes, mostly when I think of religion I'm thinking of the Abrahamaic ones.
I hate most organized religions I've encountered, but it's hard not to when their teachings tend to be corrupted or twisted to justify all manner of atrocity, or when the organized churches themselves commit and cover up their own crimes and those of their members. The catholic church in particular seems to like pulling some pretty horrifying rabbits out of their hats. That said, Buddhism as I understand it is one of the religions I have few problems with to be honest. I don't agree with all of its tenets, but the fact that it accepts that knowledge of things like a god or gods is impossible to attain and therefore not worth the effort, and that it encourages seeking truth yourself, considering things in the world around you, and accepting the thoughts, ideas and philosophies which you find to be true and which help to better your life while rejecting those that don't is something I find quite admirable. I may not believe in reincarnation, and if someone is trying to kill me I'll damn well kill them first, but I have a respect for many of the core beliefs of Buddhism.
Assuming that cancer is evil...
I wouldn't say I hate any of the ones I know about (the majority monotheistic ones like Christianity and Islam), but I intensely dislike what they can end up doing to people. Buddhism strikes me as a more philosophical belief system, although from what I know of it (admittedly little) it's not without its own groundless claims, and besides, one can not be a prick and reap the practical benefits of meditation without needing to subscribe to it. I reject the distinction between organised religion and personal religion. I don't see any reason to think someone's beliefs are likely to be any more or less fucked-up (or not) just because they're personalised or codified doctrine or not. Actually, if you pushed me, with regard to Christianity at least I actually prefer hierarchical denominations in many respects - there is more likely to be some notion of accountability, however poorly-implemented it is in practice. The really fucked-up beliefs seem to originate from free or isolated churches. As the size of a church increases, it's increasing likely that you'll incorporate more moderates than selecting out the extremists. I personally consider myself a weak-atheistic antitheist. Not being able to prove the existence or non-existence of something is no reason for wasting so much of our energy on it, IMO, and being in active opposition to religion doesn't mean you have to be a dick about doing it.
I'm an anti-theist and I don't hate Religion. And most people on here don't hate either. Hate on the internet is quickly used as hyperbole to underscore someones dislike, most of those people don't actually "hate". In the same way fear is not immediately a phobia. But to answer your question in the above parameters, I dislike all forms of organized religion, not just christianity, in various degrees.

I have a bad feeling about this but sod it I have to ask.
I have seen people say that they hate religion and I would like to know if they hate all religion or just christianity.
I was I guess agnostic for the majority of my life because I couldn't say for certain whether or not there was a god or creator or flying spagetti monster but recently I read into buddhism it made a lot of sense to me. I choose this because it was all very simplier to my own beliefs and they teachings of the buddha where just stop being a prick to each other, also mediation is awesome when your stressed out.
I thought that I should give my own religious beliefs. Back to what I was asking, I have seen people declaring their hatred of religion and I just want to know if it's organized religion, which I can kind of understand, or specific religions. It could easily be just the people too, for example, I'm not a fan of atheists or at least the militant ones that are determined to tell you how your all wrong and you should only listen to them.
So people who hate religion I'd like to know why and people who are religious themselves I'd like to know why you believe what you believe.
