What the hell is with this site and Anti-semitism

One one hand you have Andy Chalk (In this article: http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/116836-Canada-Gets-Glow-in-the-Dark-Dinosaur-Coins) referring to the Queen of England as a "Jewish Lizard-woman", and just today we have Jim Sterling referring to himself has Hitler.

Now I can understand joking, but sometimes the line you cross to tell a joke is too far. And I know that Jim likes to go to far to get a rise out of people, but this was just too much. My grandfather was smuggled out of Poland to the US while the rest of his family were carted off to death-camps in the late 30s. Millions died in those camps (not just Jews, but people of Gypsy, African, and Asian decent, people with physical and metal challenges, or belonging to a non-christian religion, pretty much anyone who the Third Reich either viewed as a threat to Aryan supremacy or viewed as unfit to live in German society).

And millions more died trying to end the threat the Nazi's posed.

Making light of any of the above would give people very strong backing should they level a lawsuit against this site and its owners, Themis Media, since they would be held accountable to Hate Speech laws on the books in the US.

The U.S. doesn't have hate speech laws. And with good reason.

Welcome to the internet, boy, home of sarcasm, satire and offensive humor. The food court's over there and the bathroom's just to your left; right next to the hall with the giant guillotine and the 4 year olds lining up in front of it.

Learn to laugh at anything and everything; you're going to need it.

Anti-semitism? Um where exactly?

Jew gotta be kidding me...

I don't think I could live in a world where we couldn't make fun of something that occurred 70 years ago. If it ever comes to the point where we can't make jokes about terrible events I know who I will blame, those damn Jews.

Jimmy Carr once said, if only Africa had more mosquito nets, every year we could save millions of mosquitoes dying needlessly of aids. No point here, it is just a funny joke that someone like yourself is probably offended by.

I take it you're one of those easily offended types?

I have no idea why Andy Chalk called the Queen a Jewish lizard woman though. That's just kinda weird.

Not every mention of Hitler or Jews is anti-semitic. You need to drop the persecution complex.

Please cite what laws they've broken.

Go on. I'll wait.

*Pulls out newspaper and sits down*

Quite frankly, this is TAME, skippy.

On second thought, I'm just gonna report him. I think he's probably just trollin...

You do understand that the first example you give was the guy taking the piss out of the moron who actually does believe there is a conspiracy of jewish lizard people, right? Hence the way the words "jewish lizardwoman" link to a ludicrous conspiracy site?

Frankly, considering the level of bile directed against muslims on this board on a daily basis, and the way that everyone in the world is required to tiptoe around anything even remotely related to WW2 or Israel or risk being branded an anti-semite, I find your post hilarious. There's a "persecution complex" joke in there somewhere, but if I told it I'd probably be banned, so I'll just end with: You are oversensitive, please stop.

I'm not Jewish and I get the Andy Chalk comment is horribly offensive and inappropriate. I didn't see the other video.

As for the Escapist editors, if the mods are any example its pretty clear to me as a 3rd party that there are topics that can get your quickly banned which are far less offensive than anti-Jewish and anti-Muslim (and to some degree, anti-religion) comments that seem to be allowed to spew freely. I can only conclude that the mods agree with some of the bigotry and hate expressed and that the editors must be on the same page.

To those who share the mods view above, I wonder how they would feel if the references were to "fags" or "niggers" or even "MLP fans".

The US has no hate speech laws, it never has, and probably as things stand never will.

In addition, I'm one of the few who actually want to implement (carefully worded) hate speech laws in the US, and your examples would STILL not apply. One comment is merely satire (check where the hyperlink attached to the "jewish lizardwoman" comment takes you), and the other is a joke, one made in poor taste perhaps, but a joke nonetheless.

There are places and times where indignation is appropriate, but this does not appear to be among them. Save your ire for those that are genuinely and/or deliberately offensive.

As I understand it, yes we do. But they're only preventing you from saying "let's go beat up [group]", not making Hitler jokes. The right to Hitler jokes must be preserved!

sephyboy:
Jew gotta be kidding me...

Heh heh.

In other news, if we can't make jokes about Hitler, then Hitler wins in a small way.

sephyboy:

it is a complete myth that the US does not have hate speech laws, its just they are very tame compared to other countries. you can be prosecuted in america for speech that includes defamation, incitement to riot or fighting words. even in america you cannot stand outside a african american church and yell out insults and goad them into violence

If you'd bothered to follow the link that Jewish lizard woman was referring to, you'd have seen that it was some crazy conspiracy website. And having a glow in the dark dinosaur on your coin makes about as much sense as a Jewish lizardman conspiracy theory. As for Jim, well, that's just Jim being slightly offensive.

...

On the other hand, certain people posting above need to cut it out, they just can't seem to stop poking.

Defamation and incitement to violence =/= hate speech, at least not by default or in terms of common usage.

To put it another way, the present law simply prohibits speech that can cause physical harm to others, it does not necessarily have anything at all to do with "disparaging or intimidating a protected individual or group". A hate speech law prohibits exactly that.

Correctimundo. You are not able to shout fire in a crowded theater. But you are able to say "Hitler was a wacky guy", despite how tasteless that is

I agree with Godavari on this one, seems you are finding anti-semitism were there is none. Your argument might hold water if you sighted more than two flimsy examples. The first, this supposed comment from Andy Chalk calling the Queen a Jewish Lizard woman is not that at all. Its a link to a video of David Icke, a known conspiracy nut who refers to the Queen as a Jewish Lizard woman. If anything Andy is pointing to the absurdity of people who display anti semetic behaviour.

Jim Stirling is an individual contributor to the sight, not a publisher, not an editor and not a representative of the escapist publishing group. Was that a stupid comment, yes, but as you mentioned, Jim's MO is to get a rise out of people.

Its pretty egregious that you would level such a claim against this site without being able to give more than a few paper-thin examples. The way your post reads it makes the Escapist out to be storm front or something.

Work on those flame shields buddy, this is the internet, you're going to need them.

Well, that's not hate speech that's being outlawed, that's incitement to violence.

I don't see the problem with Jim's comment. Anti-universe Hitler is an absolute paragon of all that is good and just...

Seriously, though, OP? Might wanna get your outrage meter checked a little.

Sometimes the best way to show you beat someone is to laugh about them. The more Hitler jokes we make, the more a joke Hitler becomes.

but hate speech can be one of those things. it is not always but it can be. a white supremacist winding up a crowd of other white supremacists with his hate speech that includes messages to bash minorities, they dont deserve to live and whatever and that group then decides to go out and act based on that speech then the speech giver is in trouble.

Can't decide for me what I find to be offensive. Okay to be offended, but some people don't if you are. Alright so take that information, process it, move on. Can tell you that some of my favorite movies of all time have tons of stuff that would probably make you cringe. Have to say that poking fun at something is the best way to get rid of it's power.

aceman67:
Queen of England as a "Jewish Lizard-woman"

Andy Chalk was referring to this conspiracy theory, promoted primarily by David Icke.

It's called a joke. Bloody hell, how desperate must you be to see anti-semitism if THAT sets off your radar?

In related news, the trailer for The Dictator was released, I hope there is going to be some antisemitism here because it will be hilarious antisemitism, which of course is the best kind.

Well then I don't want you to have that profile picture as it is clearly offensive to the japanese, be careful of lawsuits bro because we all know that the first amendment only applies to when nobody will be offended.

Yes, the speech giver is in trouble, but for incitement to violence, nothing more. Change his speech just slightly to be just as horrendously offensive, but without an actual call to action, and the speech itself is perfectly legal, even if the crowd becomes violent later.

Let me put it this way, lets say I was blasting obnoxious music at top volume from my car's speakers, I can't hear a bloody thing because of it, and end up ramming an ambulance causing a terrible accident. When arrested, would you say the laws governing the charges I would face have more to do with being a reckless driver, or specifically being an idiot with the volume controls?

Quibbles about semantics aside, you are indeed correct.

You take Andy Chalk's comment on the queen as anti-semitism?
It seems you don't get it.
He was making fun of conspiracy theorists. Specifically thruthism and the illuminati conspiracy.

Remember: It's okay to be offended. It doesn't mean anything though. You're offended? So fucking what? Do I care how you feel about a joke? No. No I don't.
Contrary to popular belief, it's not illegal to make jokes about things people feel strongly about.

By the way:

Depends on how hard you throw them.

You can make jokes about Hitler. We were actually making Hitler Jokes before the war even started (Charlie Chaplin's great dictator, for one).

The only things you really can't say is "let's beat X up right now!" (if you don't make the statement not immediate, it isn't a breach of freedom of speech), "Fire" in a theater, or other statements that can induce panics (your legally liable for anyone who is trampled to death), or "obscene" speech. The last one barely counts as nobody can really define what is and isn't obscene, unless your the FCC.

Dear god, that was the funniest shit I have seen in a long time. How does it come I did not know about this movie.
