AFA Comedians Ride Again: calls for Google boycott

 Pages 1 2 NEXT

Yup, those silly, silly people over at the American Family Association have done it again. They're calling for a boycott of Google because of Google's Legalize Love campaign.

Clicky clicky for video and laughs!

A boycott of google is about as likely to happen as a boycott of breathing oxygen. The bit at the end about the UNA taking away our guns? Yeah, that should give a pretty good idea of the caliber of person we're dealing with.

...

Eh, they have "family" in their group's name, they are supposed to be ridiculously out of touch.

thaluikhain:

Yeah, these days that's about the best litmus test for the level of crazy in these sorts of interest groups.

Shit, that's one hell of a comedy routine. Being able to get through that act straight faced...not many comedians could have done that. That guy should have his own show!

On a tangent:

Does it worry anyone that we've become so reliant on Google?

I, for one, welcome our new corporate overlords.

OT: None of this shit surprises me anymore. Thankfully, crazies like the AFA are a dying breed.

Not as long as they keep doing awesome stuff like inventing self-driving cars. Besides, it is not like Google is the only way to do whatever Google stuff you do, they are just the best at it and have a decent corporate reputation. If they did become an evil corporation we could just go back to Yahoo Search (does that still exist?).

I've toyed with the idea of Google becoming something like skynet (conspiracy theories for shits and giggles), but you hit the nail on the head -- Google is really good at what it does.

I remember the days when you'd open up your browser and have at least a dozen options, like Ask Jeeves.

I think Yahoo is still out there in some watered down form (toolbar?).

Actually...why does everyone always use google? There are plenty of other search engines, there are meta search things that stick your search terms into a bunch of search engines including google...but it's google people use.

That's me, so many times. I'm on a system where the defualt search isn't google, I use it to go to google and start from there. I could use another search, but fuck it, I'm using google.

i love the irony, gays are a detriment to society but guns are cool its not as if they have every harmed anyone

EvilNeko, where do you find such smacktards like that dude? he is like a few steps above the westboro baptists with just being polite about his crazy.

boycotting google is not just hard but rather nearly impossible, the big parts like the search is the tip of the iceberg, but they own many patents that others use for a fee and no link to google seen so you may not know it is a google product or patent. just that alone makes it near impossible to do.

Anyway theres one google product I wont ever boycot is Android until someone else brings a competitor. I dislike Apple's bussiness practice's far more than I dislike Google's. Atleast Google doesnt try to control what I use it to view like Apple does(yes Android porn aps and none for Iphone).

Captcha: Be Nice

No Captcha I will not.

Not shocking at all

I would love for a group to call themselves "We actually about family".

Would be great.

Have you tried using some other search engines, I have and the difference is amazing. We take Google for granted. For example, say I want to look up a really obscure poetry book, say 'Old Negatives' and I am not quite sure of the author. Using the search term 'old negatives book'

Bing

Yahoo

Google

This is where Google excels. For general searches in popular areas anything is fine, a 12 year old could make a search engine to find Wikipedia. Google is just really good at the more obscure searches, as well as collecting data on us to personalize everything. Some tin-foil hats see it as a breech of privacy, the rest of us just think it is awesome that a computer knows what we want.

It was mentioned near the tail end of Lawrence O'Donnel's show on MSNBC. I thought it was hilarious and wanted to share, so I went to Google News to find an online article I could link to, and here we are!

Now, I probably could cut the Google cord, so to speak. I don't have an Android anything. I don't use Chrome. I even [REDACTED] their [REDACTED] servers. I could try another search engine. I could stop forwarding my regular email to GMail.

But, I kinda like the GMail interface.

Also the Google News interface.

Also the Google interface in general.

I am far more concerned about Microsoft.. That is a scary one there. Gates is a madman. Rather than using his influence and wealth to do something beneficial like funding saltwater conversion to areas that that are in most need.. he wants to instead create a giant pump to pump the water from the bottom of the ocean and stick it on top.

I understand he means well but by doing things like this I am not really sure if he is helping. I am sure everyone remembers his Mosquito stunt

That guy I think is far more scarier than Google.
Apple tops my list though as scariest.

Oddly the only thing I use of Google is the search engine and I use other search engines for more complicated subjects along with it.

my email is Yahoo and probably one of the oldest continualy used as primary email running I know my brother inlaws yahoo email is older but he stopped using it as primary, so i got him lol.

My issue with Google itself is ... well i dont really have one condsidering it is a giant corporation eating all teh(intentional bad spelling, the rest was not and fair game for spelling nazi's) money. there is just so much Google does where we can use it and not pay for it compared to other corporations. shit they keep youtube running at a loss just because it is popular. for a corporation they are putting the customer first and profit last compared to the others.

Apple on the other hand... Nope do not like them. my MP3 player is completely free of iTunes and will never touch that shit. I do not like being forced to use a service and thats where i9 prefer Android devices.

Remember me and all our disagreements? I agree Apple is the tech company people should complain about. yes Google is getting the biggest share these days... but whats the competition? MS and a bad rep of vulnerable and crash happy? Apple and dictatorship over use and the Apple tax?

If people want to complain then complain at the horrid competition for being so bad compared and use some of the competition like Yahoo or Bing for search.

thaluikhain:

Well said.
But even so, the AFA have made a name for themselves as massive bigots, so we wouldn't even need their group's name to clue us in.

I disagree with everyone some of the time. :) If we all agree all of the time that means no one is thinking.

Bing is just.. dreadful. I will take google over the others any day. Apple is a nightmare. Seriously with some of the things they have done, I was thinking "where do they get these people?!!" They are some serious control freaks there. Apple is like a stalker...Beware of the Apple police!

I think Pyrate is dead on in saying that we take Google for granted. I know I sure do because it's a product/service that almost seamlessly integrates itself into the everyday.

I do not use anything of theirs but their search engine, but with how awful the others are, how can we even use anything else? I am not too "knowledgeable" on the other things google does other than their browser, phone and search engine. I am not really fond of their browser though. I tried it and it irritated me so I got rid of it. I have an old " flip phone" that I keep in my car and always forget to answer, so I am not overly concerned with their cool phones.

Yahoo Search (does that still exist?).

Yahoo! was powered by google for a while until they went independent but they are now outsourcing again and should sometime this year be fully transferred over to Bing.

We must boycott breathing SO THAT THE GAYS WILL LEARN A LESSON!

LET EVOLUTION TAKE THESE BIGOTS OFF THE FACE OF THE EART- I MEAN LETS GET THE GAYS!

You got to admire the way Apple have taken over the world with their brand of fruity consumer cum-fashion items, though.

It is frightening to watch adults fight over the first one like the children did furbies. I just don't "get it". Am I weird for not finding those things remotely interesting? If someone gave me one I would just give it to someone who would use it. I hate "touch screen" anything. It hurts my fingertips and my nails keep getting in the way. I find them quite irritating. But some people appear to drool over them like a kid in a candy store. It completely baffles me.

You are not seriously going to boycott google are you? You have to be kidding. LOL

The thing you also have to remember about Google is that they are the company that perfected a lot of the online systems that we take for granted today.

Just look at Google Auto-complete. It takes searches from around the world that start with what you are typing, but rather than just leaving it at that it then prioritizes them based on your location and previous browsing history. To top it off it then loads the search results of the top ranked auto-complete results...and it does all of this in the time it takes you to type a couple of words. Before Google came along Auto-complete was essentially what Apple uses, the good old fashion "well you have used this word before so this might be it" approach.

As someone was in primary school during the launch of Google, I can not thank them enough for what they have done. I remember the days of spending an hour in the late 90s just trying to find a damn website that had the information you wanted. Can you imagine how much worst the workload would be in the last couple of years of high school if it took you more than 10 seconds to find the website you need.

I have never used either of those features, and find them quite annoying. * Takes issues with my computer doing ANYTHING I do not tell it to do.* I gut subsystems, manually close ports, shut down all automatic features and only let it do it when I allow it to. I honestly just want an operating system that does what I want it to do, when I want it to do it~ Not what it wants when it wants to do it. That background stuff drives me nuts. I always run with my monitors on so I can see what it is doing. HAHA!

I really hate the location and browsing history thing as well. When you try to search for something different, it keeps putting the same crap up there that you didn't want in the first place, rather than give you something better.
