Glen Beck goes Bioshock on us!

 Pages 1 2 NEXT

From Yahoo News

Right-wing rabble-rouser Glenn Beck recently announced that he wanted to "go Galt" and create a self-sustaining community, inspired by the philosophy of Ayn Rand's character John Galt from "Atlas Shrugged."

The community will be known as Independence, USA. If and when it is completed, Independence will produce its own food and TV and film content. There will be homes, baseball fields and a theme park. Think: Small Town, USA, but with a Beckish vibe.

Beck announced his plans on "The Glenn Beck Program." The main entrance to the proposed community will be based on Ellis Island because, in Beck's words, that's how most Americans came to the country. There will also be a marketplace, but don't confuse it with your local mall.

"There's not going to be a Gap here. There's no Ann Taylor. You want an Ann Taylor, go someplace else," Beck said in a video announcement. The marketplace, Beck says, will be a place for people to create their own businesses and learn from others.

Other areas of Independence: The ranch (that's where residents will grow food and teach people how to grow crops), the media center (where Beck will film his show and where other entertainers will create movies, TV shows and documentaries), an Alamo-style mission for people to "gather and help others," a research and development laboratory and much more.
The main point, Beck says, is education. "Before you send your kids to college," Beck said in his pitch video, "you come to us. And you spend a week with us. We're gonna tell them exactly, we will show them the truth, we will tell them what they're going to try to do, and we will deprogram them every summer, if you care."
What's Beck's utopia gonna cost? Around $2 billion. Beck says he's willing to take steps to make his vision happen "one piece at a time." Just don't expect to find a Gap.

It ain't just the Citadel folks; seems that Glenn Beck wants to get in on the micronation, bandwagon, and yes, Beckie stated that his project, a city called "Independance", would be based on the teachings of author Ayn Rand.

So speculate on his plans and feasibility, yell about Beck, or (hopefully) use this excuse to make Bioshock jokes at his expense......

Its not going to be a very Ayn Rand-y place if he is going to have an "Alamo-style mission".

far be it for me to pick holes in the fantasies of the mentally ill but how can you have a ranch who's entrance is on Ellis Island ?

and just for reference this is Ellis Island :

image

its in the middle of the Hudson and its owned by the National Park Service ie the government.

around it are the docks of NYC and NJ

hardly a place for a ranch.

or is this gonna be like when he supposedly tried to buy that TV station (but had no money to buy it) and he blames it the other party for him not managing to achieve it ?

isn't there someone we can phone ? get him a nice new jacket with sleeves up the back ?

really ?

So... Jonestown, basically. But with much more ultra-conservative rhetoric and (hopefully) less kool-aid. Well, this will be interesting to watch. :D

The SECOND I made a post in a previous thread about how the Libertarians/Objectivists strangely didn't have their own community despite "Going Galt" being associated with them the most.

Anyways, imagine it folks, this will be the greatest thing to happen to America in centuries. It's putting all the "Taxes are FORCE!" and "I'VE GOT MINE!" folks in one place, safely and quietly away from the rest of us.

If the community fails, then they'll have to sheepishly leave and say "Yeah, not the best idea... Looking back on it. Maybe you were right." if it doesn't, then there's a place where folks like Beck will be spending the rest of their days, off the airwaves and away from the general public.

So yeah, I'd support this if Limbaugh and the Ayn Rand institute all get behind the idea and vow to leave for "independence" as well.

Who knows, maybe he could work with the gun advocates and mix "Independence" and "Citadel" into one super city? Or something like that. Sure, I expect it to destroy itself in time, but who am I to ruin their fun.

Beck, I may dislike you, but if you follow through with this idea, then I, a Democrat, will try to help raise donations just so it's built.

It says it will be "based on" Ellis Island. As in "drawing inspiration from", not actually having their home base there.

Ever heard of "Christian Objectivists"? They make the best Hypocrisy Pie in the country!

Funny that they merged two philosophies that are polar opposites of one another, Jesus Christ would see Ayn Rand as evil and a servant of the devil (though I personally see the former more true then the latter) while Ayn Rand would think Jesus was "insane" for committing the terrible crime of... Dying to save mankind.

Still, I sort of have an urge to put "Christian Socialists" and "Christian Objectivists" in a single room and sees who comes out the victor. My vote is on the Socialists, simply because they could probably scrounge up more evidence to support them.

The Objectivists would win, because the Socialists would kill themselves from violently banging their heads against the wall every time the Objectivists opened their mouths.

(Christian Objectivists?!? Bad enough there are so many Satanist objectivists, and I could poke their thinking full of holes with one hand tied behind my back-- Christian objectivism would have so many holes that I think it'd be .005 milligrams full of material and the rest would all be air.)

......So this is where the 1 Million Freedomworks paid Beck to say nice things about them is going to?
If this mad dream ever does happen, I'm going to throwing banned goods over the walls just to spite them.

Also:

"Before you send your kids to college," Beck said in his pitch video, "you come to us. And you spend a week with us. We're gonna tell them exactly, we will show them the truth, we will tell them what they're going to try to do, and we will deprogram them every summer, if you care."

This scares me a lot because a lot of kids are just under 18 before they go to college, meaning that they wouldn't have a say in the matter and their parents are still legally allowed make the choice of to stay or to leave for them, meaning there could be X% of kids who will go there and X% out of them will agree with Becks rants.
And thus, we get even more Glen Becks...

/Facts might be wrong on the Legal adult age, but you know what I'm talking about

And not long after that we'll get mutant Glen Becks as him and Limbaugh go to war over control of the city. Whoever loses, nobody wins.

You're way too optimistic. As soon as it fails, outsiders of that same persuasion will claim that Beck "did it wrong" or something, while Beck and his will claim there was "outside interference" or something. There's no way they'll admit defeat regarding their ideology, only regarding the project.

@Diablo1099
Agreed, the whole "get 'em while they're young"-angle is strong in this one. Didn't he also control and/or promote those "Tea Party summer camps" or whatever they were called a while back?

So basically, it's going to be a place where people work together towards clear shared ideological goals, sharing skills and resources and living in close dependence on other human beings.

..never been tried before. ;)

Please, please, please let this happen. A whole island full of Glenn Becks? This could make for the greatest reality TV show/snuff film of all time.

I give it five hours before Glenn Beck ends up dancing around a fire, naked and smeared in blood and screeching, "KILL THE PIG, CUT HER THROAT, BASH HER IN!!!"

I can't detect sarcasm on the internet. I'll just assume you're joking.

You have to remember that we're talking about objectivists. I say that they'll probably manage to sink the island in the sea somehow.

A good quote from Bioshock was "In every society there's always someone who has to clean the toilets". If they actually built a society by themselves instead of mooching of the United States, then they would hopefully realize that they won't automatically get their own trains if they go Galt. Not everyone who's rich got that way through work and not everyone who's poor is lazy.

Since I doubt they'll ever invent plasmids, it's probably more likely they'll go LoF on us.

After "Temptation Island" we have "Objectivist Island". Now that's TV!

As everyone one this forum should know, I am a Republican. I make no attempt to hide that fact. That being said:

GO FOR IT BECK!! DO IT NOW!!!! ITS THE BEST IDEA YOU HAVE EVER HAD!!!!! *aside*I give him a week.

No! Those were "Rehabilitation" Camps designed to extract the socialist mind control implant those darn liburals implanted in their frontal lobes!.....

Am I doing this right?

OT: Could have, that guy gets around in Right Wing Circles.
Also, didn't set up some self-improvement thing called "9/12"? The people from that going to get a discount on the entry fee?

Ideology based communes never turn out well. Rapture's philosophy in Bioshock pretty much seals the deal that an objectivist society is open to...every social ill that every society has dealt with since ever; but without plasmids. It won't last.

All we need is a Camera, a Helicopter and a Bungee Cord and we'll have the BEST reality TV show EVER! XD

Frankly, the whole idea sounds a lot more communist to me than objectivist. Something like a Kibbutz for right wingers.

Yup. And know what's funny? That while back, when that lunatic Breivik shot all those kids in that socialist vacation club or whatever in Norway? Beck reported on it, and all he really had to say was "Wait, they sent kids to political summer camps? That sounds like nazism to me, like the Hitler Youth."

GunsmithKitten:
the media center (where Beck will film his show and where other entertainers will create movies, TV shows and documentaries),

And if they are going for self-sufficiency, I suppose Beck will be making all the camera's by hand, mining all the rare minerals and making his own plastic etc etc?

Doesn't matter if he claims himself independent. If they build said town in the US, then they still have to pay federal tax. Heck, they have to pay state-tax too, don't they? There is no opting out of it. So no matter how hard they try, they won't be able to build their Ayan Rand-community. Exactly what are they trying to achieve? That some people that share the same ideology can work together and achieve success? The Amish have already done that. So what's the big deal? Someone explain to me exactly how this is different from a group of people setting out and founding their own city. I really don't understand this.

Glenn Beck takes one step closer to do something on par with the Jonestown massacre. This guy needs some help, when you start to believe you where chosen by god to protect "your people" from a president who you consider to be the anti christ you are off your rocker. Now he wants to make a separate community... he can bring as many elites as he wants but i see this as a brain washing cult and I hope that it doesn't get off the ground. And to be clear I DO think this is a worse idea then the citadel or hippie communes.

Steve digs his own mines and builds some pretty impressive stuff. Glen Beck can follow in his footsteps.

Not to mention refining his own oil to make the plastics. That'll be amusing to see....

Well, I suppose if he was really determined, he could declare sovereignty and make his own micro nation. We already have one in the U.S., the glorious "Republic of Molossia" in west nevada

http://www.molossia.org/countryeng.html

Granted I'm not sure whether the government recognizes Molossia's sovereignty or whether they still pay U.S. taxes

There's also "Free State Christiania" in Denmark, but then again, I don't know much about that one either.

EDIT: Also those states are rather small. I'm not sure how the government would respond to a whole town declaring sovereignty.

Micronations are not recognized as their own nations, for a multitude of legal and ethical reasons.
Christiania, for example, is just called 'Free State' because for a long time Denmark let people more or less freely use drugs there without repercussions. It's a walled off, glorified crack-house, nothing more (I've been there).

Galt's Gulch was supposed to be a secret so it couldn't be looted and mooched from. Beck's version is not going to be a secret or even hard to get to.

John Galt secretly recruited the best artists, industrialists and scientists. Back only seems to be after small businessmen.

It was also supposed to be almost self sufficient, complete with iron ore mine, steel works and tobacco growing. Beck's will mostly have agriculture, broadcasting and schools.

Galt's Gulch was covered by some unexplained, artificial effect that camouflaged it against overhead aircraft. Beck's won't have any super-science devices.

Alright, I'm just analyzing a bad marketing gimmick. So instead of a community isolating themselves, we'd get one reinforcing each other's stupidity and broadcasting it.

The community will be known as Independence, USA.

Because there aren't enough cities in the US already named Independence.

This is just a PR move for Beck to try to regain some of his waning popularity. Nothing will come of it.

You are forgetting the greatest micronation of all. The great and noble kingdom of Lovely. Whose territory, as far as I'm aware, still consists solely of the London flat where Danny Wallace used to live. So it's a very micro micronation. About 400 square feet.

Still glorious, though.

I hope it's a PR stunt. He's been building a small media empire that creates a content feedback loop (the Blaze, his "news" division writes a story that would make World Net Daily proud, which he proudly proclaims as true on his web show, which generates traffic on the Blaze for more crazy stories).

If it's not a PR stunt, then he honestly believes some of the insane shit that he's been spewing to his audience, and that is far scarier than a con man.

Holy crap. I mean holy crap.

Seriously? SERIOUSLY!?

This is nuts, I cannot believe this, this is insane!

People still use Yahoo services!?

OT: Private money, private land, let him. If it fails it's on his head. But he should be allowed to fail (which I think he will).
