Whats this? A gun control bill advanced in New York.

Breaking News!: Water is wet, and snow is cold. Also at 11: Winter is also cold and Summer is hot.

And really, thats about all I can get from this. It effects me in no way, except to add the umptinth reason to my list of "Why I wont live in New York." My state of Kansas will continue to allow you to own Machineguns, tanks, and anything short of heavy artillery and guided missiles, so long as you have the money, pass the background checks, and get the paperwork filled out. And no damns will be given.

The same attitude and tool that blew George Tiller's brains all over a church, right?

Except that Scott Roeder is rotting in jail right now. He was punished to the full extent of the Kansas Law-50 years with no parole.(death penalty is only for commiting more than one murder.) He shot a man and killed him, and it wasnt in self defense, so he rightly is in jail.

But here is the thing. That is one of the only high profile events that happened in our state like that. Even including that, Kansas is BELOW the national average on homicide. (US:4.9, Kansas:4.0). All this despite the fact that we are very gun friendly here and an above average amount of people own guns. And we dont have any mass shootings either. The only mass killings in history took place during Bleeding Kansas in the 1850. Our own personal Civil War before it was cool. If assualt weapons and more guns were really the problem, we should have become a warzone by now due to the fact you can own assualt rifles, Bazookas, and TANKS. But again, we are below the national average, so apparently its not the guns.

Liberals, celebrate, the authoritarianism continues to rise and rise..

This right here? Stop it. I am tired of being associated with anti-gun peoples just because I lean left, and being called a redneck hick cause I own guns and am not for gun bans.(also Alabamian) It just makes me twitch and feel stabby.

There's no reason for you to feel stabby because if that's what you believe, then I'm not talking about you.

It's not just you, just tired of the association. I am very left leaning on most issues, and in all actually I am further left then the American left (Woo Democratic Socialism) I have just incredibly tired of people using Liberal as a catchall for a particular stance on a specific issue. Same for the other way around. Especially since I deal with both sides of the debate on a fairly regular basis, and catch shit from all sides. Just very tired and frustrated with the generalization.

Edit: TO clarify, nothing against you personally. Was just the straw that broke the camel's back after a week filled with more stupid then usual.

No problem, I get it. Being pro gay-marriage, pro-choice on abortion, but also anti-government economic interventionism, high taxes, and high entitlements, I clash with both sides.

That's just the thing though, it's only a generalization. Useful for describing something succinctly without having to be ultra-specific and verbose.

I suppose if I had to be specific about the people who are happy about this knee-jerk legislative reaction, I'd call them nanny-state, idealistic pro-authoritarianism fanatical statists.

Ryotknife:
unlawful seizure of property. Since the people who bought the guns when they were legal committed no crime, you can not sieze them.

Government would have to pay for the property. Which would be...well...a lot of money that we dont have.

banning guns and then going door to door seizing any gun that is now illegal breaks all sorts of laws.

"Optimally with some sort of reimbursement for the lost item."

Although I doubt they couldn't do it without if they wanted to. They can imprison people without any sort of trial, they can torture people, they can do all sorts of stuff (including to Americans, not just foreigners, mind) that are deemed highly illegal and unconstitutional and few people bat an eye.

You apparently missed the point.

Also Kansas is mostly rural and rural areas tend to have lower ratios of death shootings than urban areas. People in rural areas also have a larger need for firearms as everyday tools (for pest control, hunting etc.)than people in urban areas do (where the only real uses for a firearm is self-defense or recreational). So you've got to factor in which kind of area we are talking about, what kind of weapons are the most common and what the common application of these weapons are. That's why homicide ratios and gun ownership can't be directly compared, among other things.

You're missing the point. Without guns, that guy is unlikely to have killed. Religious zealots like Roeder are cowards by nature. They lack the nerve and determination to walk up to someone and kill them hand to hand, they need guns for the 'just squeeze the trigger and you're done' effect.

It's only because Roeder was a gun owner, that he was able to kill. Without guns, Tiller would still be alive, Roeder would still be free. And that's a better outcome no matter which way you look at it.

Ever heard of 'population density'?
