GamerGate
Disclaimer: GamerGate does not, has not, and never will, endorse the harassment or abuse of anyone for any reason. Everyone should call out anyone who attacks, harasses, or abuses anyone.

What does GamerGate want?
In a phrase: Ethical Standards and Practices in the Gaming Journalism Industry.

GamerGate desires straightforward, honest coverage of the industry, such that anyone can read these outlets with the basic expectation that they are being told the truth. In an ideal world, every gaming outlet would adopt the New York Times' Standards and Ethics policies, but that is an unrealistic goal in the world of internet media. As such, we must be content with ethical policies that fit within the limitations. The Escapist, a gaming media site of some repute, has already adopted such a set of standards.

To put it in layman's terms:

  1. Truth and fact must be treated with the respect they deserve. This means, at a minimum:
    • Opinions are not to be stated as universal truths
    • Hearsay is not to be reported as factual without corroborating evidence
    • Assumptions and speculation are not to be reported as fact
    • Intentionally misleading or inflammatory wording is not ever to be used, in headlines or elsewhere
    • When in doubt, stick only to information that would hold up under examination in a court of law
  2. Editorials and other opinion pieces are to be kept separate from News pieces. Bias and opinion will always color a writer's work, but they should strive for as much objectivity as reasonably possible in the News. If they wish to share their opinion on the piece, something that should be encouraged, it should be done in a distinct space.
    • There's nothing wrong with the News article including "And I think it's great/terrible/stupid/etc, click this link to find out why" or some variation thereof. It is only within the article proper that opinions are to be avoided.
  3. All journalists must be required to behave professionally within the public space. This includes but is by no means limited to:
    • No irrational, emotionally-driven rants
    • No insults, threats, or any of the other assorted childishness
    • Engage the audience calmly, reasonably, and without rancor, or do not engage them at all
    • Be aware when one is within the public space, especially any and all social media.
    • Do not treat one's audience as an enemy
  4. Journalists must strive to be objective. No human can be truly impartial, but journalists must strive to the best of their ability to be above external bias, and to inform their readers when they cannot. Put simply, this means they must, at minimum:
    • Recuse themselves from reporting news regarding subjects that they have a personal or financial link to
    • Disclose any personal or financial connections to subjects they are giving opinion pieces on (Editorials, Op-Eds, Reviews, etc)
    • Engage in honest and fair coverage. Consistency and the interest of/relevance to the audience must be the deciding factor in the decision to run a story.

GamerGate simply wants gaming media websites to adopt some variation on these policies, much like the Escapist has, and actively work to adhere to them. Nothing more and nothing less.

Why is it happening?
Over the last five years, the gaming media has grown increasingly politicized, all with the same political stance and agenda. It has become almost unheard of for a gaming news piece not to include at least a passing comment about a game being retrograde for not matching this stance, or for a game to be praised to the moon because it reflects the right politics. Many gamers are sick of it. Add on to this the claims of corruption, of censorship, of blacklisting, and of careers ruined, and these gamers have become incensed.

Gamers have been lied to, belittled, shamed, stifled, and held in contempt by the industry they created and continue to drive. Developers have been attacked, silenced, belittled, and forced to compromise their art by this same industry.

It has to stop. GamerGate is a grassroots movement by the gaming community to hold the press accountable for their actions and to demand better.

Where did it come from?
GamerGate is a recent, wide-ranging controversy that began in late August 2014 as a direct result of the seemingly corrupt and wildly unprofessional behavior of the gaming press. On August 16, Eron Gjoni, ex-boyfriend of developer Zoe Quinn published a blog on wordpress called The Zoe Post. In this blog, he alleged that Quinn cheated on him with several members of the video game industry, one of whom was a writer for Kotaku. This post created a substantial uproar in the gaming community. Some took the post as license to attack Quinn, while many, many others were incensed by the relationship and potential for conflicts of interest it presented in Grayson's reporting.

Overwhelmingly, the gaming press responded to this in a markedly different fashion from previous, similar allegations and began a campaign of censorship. On nearly every gaming-related website, from user-driven sites like Reddit and NeoGAF to contributor-driven sites like Kotaku, any discussion of the topic, or even topics almost completely unrelated, was quenched immediately and without question. Even a handful of 4chan's moderators came into play and tried to silence the discussion.

This nearly universal response and behavior pattern, wildly outside the normal bounds of the sites in question, made many people suspicious of collusion or conspiracy and questions began to be asked. Such as why it was considered acceptable for a professional journalist to have sex with a subject. Or why there was a nebulous network of financial support between developers and journalists through the use of websites like Patreon. Or even simply if ethical standards existed in the gaming journalism industry.

Major industry figures confirmed that these issues existed and insisted that they were not a problem. Then on August 28/29, 11 gaming news sites (Gamasutra, DailyDot, Kotaku, Polygon, and several others) published articles declaring some variation of 'Gamers are Dead' and that any and all calls for better journalism were made only as cover for 'neckbearded misogynerds' to harass women. This incensed a large portion of their audience and even reached well known actor Adam Baldwin, who coined the Twitter hashtag #gamergate upon his getting involved, which the movement has since adopted as its moniker.

In the ensuing weeks, gamers and the entrenched gaming press have been at odds over the issues of honest and ethical reporting laid out against claims of anonymous harassment and threats.

Since the beginng of #GamerGate, the wikipedia article on the topic has been a battleground for editors & admins fighting for bias vs neutrality. A wiki editor joined in the Escapist thread to explain some things, and Jimmy Wales has even weighed in on the matter.

Lots of links to various articles and videos:

GameJournoPros Mailing List

Actually, it IS about ethics in games journalism.

GameJournoPros is a private (but not secret) mailing list of 150 games journalists & some game company PR types. Genuinely inspired by JournoList, Kyle Orland of Ars Technica created the list a few yeasr ago. Since the first leaks, more and more information has come out pointing to collusion & cross publication pressure to control certain narratives and blacklisting of devs and journalists.

Developers and Journalists Speaking Out

Since #GamerGate exploded onto the twittersphere, developers and journalists have started speaking out about their experiences.

Escapist dev interviews & responses:

TFYC

The Fine Young Capitalists are a feminist group running two projects: one to help women realise their ideas as games, and another to get more black characters into manga.
They were caught up in #GamerGate by when a relatively obscure indie developer took offense to TFYC's competition. As a result, TFYC's indiegogo campaign was hacked and they have received harassment and DDoSing since.
TFYC, despite running an initiative to get more women into game production and to be valued for their ideas, was since blacklisted by the gaming media. #GamerGate waere able to get their indiegogo campaign funded, and /v/ and Reddit will have a character each represented in the game Afterlife Empire (Vivian James and Gilda Mars respectively).

#NotYourShield

#NotYourShield is the sister hashtag to #GamerGate and is used in conjunction with the #GG tag. It was born out of #GG supporter's frustrations engaging with oponents to #GG that presumed all supporters to be straight, white, cis-males. Any declaration otherwise was met with sock-puppet accusations, resulting in many of #NYS having to post their pictures. Some, repeatedly. AGGros often accuse #GG of using #NYS as a shield themselves (failing to acknowledge that #NYS are #GG) or being an astroturfing campaign created by "4chan".
Twitter users Ninouh90 and j_millerworks have both been credited with the tag's inception.

Greetings, good people of The Escapist. Allow me to make a small, introductory post for myself so that people know where I stand in this whole #Gamergate debacle.

How did I get in to this mess? - Not entirely sure, really. I can only tell you that my journey began with The Zoe Post. Like a lot of people, I'd wager. At first I figured it wasn't any of my business, until I heard about her sleeping around with a journalist. That's when I realized there's more to the story than met the eye. Early on I even got insulted for defending people's right to know if the journalist compromised his integrity, which was fun ...

How do I feel about #Gamergate? - It's an admirable movement, certainly, but it has a lot of flaws. For one, there is no denying that the movement has its fair share of bad apples. They need to be called out and even shunned if need be. Also, a lot of people in the movement are out for blood, which I don't entirely agree with. But, more on that later. For now, all I want to say is that our side of the Gate has been my favorite side of it.

How do I feel about "the other side"? - They're dangerous. Regardless of their agenda's, the people on the "other side" of this are just way too damn powerful. They can destroy careers, control the narrative, get away with anything and aren't afraid to alienate their audience. Yes, a lot of them are simply misguided, but most of them aren't afraid to be toxic human beings. Just look at "Worse than Isis" and the fact that the writer of that tweet is still receiving support from his peers.

What do I want out of #Gamergate? - Things have come very far, at this point. At first I was all for wanting there to be better ethics and standards in journalism, but now I want something else as well. I want for the victims of "the other side" to land on their feet. I want them to know that we have their back. They've been bullied, and that just won't fly. Same goes for good people on their side that have been bullied by us.

Is that really all I want out of #Gamergate? - Well, I wouldn't mind finally seeing Anita Sarkeesian exposed as the hack she is. It'd be a nice bonus.

So, how do I feel about Anita and Zoe being part of #Gamergate? - Well, they're pieces of the puzzle. Both are getting more support and attention than they deserve. Seems like #Gamergate has taken it upon themselves to expose them for who they really. Thus maybe bring down some of the biggest figure heads of "the other side". And I applaud that, to be honest. We're showing journalists how its done, and that's just as important as advocating for better ethics and standards.

How do I see the end of #Gamergate? - That's a tough question, to be honest. I'm fairly certain that neither side is going to really win. The "other side" has lied, insulted and broken laws to continue their narrative, so they're certainly not going to win. And we're probably not going to be able to change the minds of Kotaku, Polygon, Zoe, Bob and the likes. I see the end of #Gamergate as the point where we have gotten our message across, that we have the hearts of the audience and that we've made an impact to at least some sites. We've certainly changed Defy Media, and that's going to be the one thing I will be most proud of. Even if I myself had just a tiny, almost unnoticeable hand in it.

What does #Gamergate need the most? - The Jim Sterling we used to know and love.

I highly suggest people to go to https://twitter.com/oliverbcampbell twitter and read what he has to say about the state of gaming, gamergate, games journalism, game devs and E3. It's insightful. He's a games journalist.

(Edit: I was beaten to posting the stream link.) He better fire up a game quickly before the Twitch mods come in, and I think Dragon's Crown or something chocked full of fan service would have been more fitting than what he might put up. So far it's pretty informative though.

Jim Sterling, if you're reading this by the off chance, hello. How are you doing. Probably not to well, eh? This whole kerfuffle has been quite a long, drawn out mess hasn't it?

I mean, you thought you'd be just fine with appealing to the viewers and championing yourself as an attacker of unethical practices. Who knew you'd eventually be in this position? Well, perhaps you knew this might happen eventually, you seem like a smart guy, but it does seem to have caught you off guard.

You're probably thinking "crap, how do I win this stupid game?". Well, I might not be as experienced at you at this sort of thing, but I think I might have a few suggestions:

1. Reaffirm that since you have friendships with some of the people involved in this, you're going to have to recuse yourself from covering those aspects.

2. With yourself recused of those people, start handling choice examples of corruption in the game industry, pointing out those things while maintaining those stories in isolation from the other incidents you don't wish to cover.

An example would be that one youtuber Alice having a PR person try to take advantage of them sexually in exchange for implied publicity: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4JsYab06atM . See? Related to what GamerGate is against, but not related to the events you're currently having a hard time with. You don't even need to mention Gamergate!

Sooooo, did Reddit just seriously shadowban someone in front of Julian Assange? *grabs a chair* dis gun be gud.

So far on the stream, it's pretty informative. There's some stuff we already knew that he confirmed, such as the cliques, and metacritic factoring into journalists getting paid and developers pretty much having their futures hinge on the metacritic reviews. He did point out this situation we're in is like the video game version of the Hollywood Blacklist.

Edit: The "New McCarthyism" statement was kind of chilling. In fact most of the stuff he either confirmed or revealed is kind of chilling. Thank the gods for Nintendo and their Directs.

What we have here is proof that these people just do not care about even being seen at all. They literally banned someone for asking a question of one of the biggest free speech advocates on the planet. People need to know about this stuff. Censorship has been and continues to be a problem on many sites, worst of all Reddit. They tried the same thing with mine and so many other accounts a few weeks back and it is disheartening to see it still chugging along. Luckily I got my shadow-ban reversed. Hopefully this guy does too.

So, that was a facepalm moment if I ever saw one. It's like when Rebecca and Atheism+ tried to go after Dawkins.

About me and #GamerGate.

I'm an old time cynic and an old time gamer. I have personally given up on gaming journalism for some time now, but is heartwarming to see younger or more hopeful gamers trying to untangle the corrupt, incompetent mess that is games journalism.

My reasons for supporting GG is for freedom of creative expression and an environment where developers can make whatever they want, however they want it, for whatever audience they want to make it for. Without fear of persecution or blacklisting.

To that end, I will fight tooth and nail to the best of my abilities which isn't much on the internet to be sure, but we all give what we have.

#GamerGate The future of gaming lies in your hands.

Fart's currently losing his mind about this on Twitter, and even Milo's aware of this mess now.

Seriously though, what are the Reddit Admins thinking? This is exactly the kinda thing that caused this entire controversy to explode in the first place.

Also, doing it in front of Assange just makes it look even worse.

Hi Everyone,

Can some one please post the screen caps of people offering free game codes for those who would say disparaging things with the GamerGate hagtag? One of my Twitter followers asked for some evidence of this occurring and I can't find it in the former 800 page thread.

Sooooo, did Reddit just seriously shadowban someone in front of Julian Assange? *grabs a chair* dis gun be gud.

I'm still not quite sure who thought that was a good idea.

He may not do anything though.
Someone on /v/ mentioned that his book is being published by part of the same group that own reddit.

However, he did call it pathetic and essentially say 'vote with your wallet'
or clicks in this case.

I like that message.

That has basically been our message since day 2 or so. Don't give places that pee on us the clicks or the revenue. Support new breakouts that service our needs, not some third party ideologies.

True.

It's just nice to see it stated by someone outside of GamerGate for once.

Hi Everyone,

Can some one please post the screen caps of people offering free game codes for those who would say disparaging things with the GamerGate hagtag? One of my Twitter followers asked for some evidence of this occurring and I can't find it in the former 800 page thread.

Here is a post in the original thread with some screencaps you wanted.

Hi, i just wanted to say i'm quitting #gamergate

It has become too long winded and im tired of reading about this horrible people.

I have been with you guys for a while fighting the fight lol and i will continue to do so.

Never again will i hit any of the blacklisted sites (except gamespot or ign) until their ban is lifted.

If i see someone linking to gamasutra or kotaku ill mock them and run them out of the thread :)

Im just gonna go back to you know actually playing games.

If anything does show up ill be back ASAP

Kudos to everyone here and remember what we learned from #gamergate , corruption will not win!

I have this incredible feeling that I missed quite a bit of stuff since last night, but at least I have a bottle of Pepto in case I need it.

So... what'd I miss so far?

Not much. Just this little incident:

...wonder if it's safe to drink a couple shots of this. Okay, calm and rational, calm and rational...

I know everyone saw this in the last thread, but I wanted to post it in this one:

And he retweeted it to the NAACP!

Julian Assange, the NAACP, does anyone want to give Glen Beck a call, just to completely round out the lunacy?

Glad I didn't drink anything when I read that. I would have lost a laptop if I was.
